A Prayer for Mom
A young boy had been misbehaving, so his mother sent
him to his room. Sometime later, he came out and told
his mom he’d prayed about the matter. “That’s good,”
she replied. “If you ask God for help to not misbehave,
he’ll help you.”
“Oh, I didn’t pray for help behaving,” said the boy. “I
prayed for God to help you put up with me.”

The Pastor’s Message
In last month's newsletter, I wrote about
holiness or Christian perfection. This month
I want to concentrate more on how we can
begin to achieve that state.
Back in February I attended the Upper
Room Five Day Academy for Spiritual
Formation, held at the Winshape Retreat on
the campus of Berry College. The week was spent in a
structured environment of worship, prayer, study, and small
group conferencing. This was a concentrated effort to
practice some of the spiritual disciplines. We began and
ended each day with a short worship service. We used the
format from the Upper Room Worship Book, but the details
are not as important as the general form which was scripture,
song, and prayer. This simple format can be done in small
groups or individually. There are a number of resources
available to guide you in morning and evening devotion or
worship. They generally include suggested scripture readings
on a daily schedule, psalms or hymns to sing (or if you are
musically challenged as I am, to simply read the words), and
suggested prayer forms. Bishop Reuben Job has published
several helpful resource guides to individual and group daily
worship. If you prefer informal formats, just spend some
time with scripture and in prayer.
During this week, week celebrated Holy Communion each
afternoon. This was possible because in our group
environment, there were several ordained ministers available
to lead us daily. This is not always possible on a daily basis,
but Holy Communion is a means of grace that we should
participate in as often as possible.
Our study sessions consisted of lecture, quiet time, and
discussion. Individually, we can participate in the spiritual
discipline of study by reading scripture, Christian classics,
and/or the many books, magazines, and articles available
which can enrich our faith. We have available to us many
means of study that can help us to grow spiritually.
During the five day academy we met together in small
groups each evening to share together our thoughts,
concerns, ideas, or anything else that we had experienced
during the day. A small accountability group helps to keep
us growing in faith and practicing the other spiritual
disciplines. My doctoral research project showed that over
time, regular participation in such a small group enhances
the spiritual growth and discipleship developed by the other
disciplines.
As we wrote last month, holiness defines a way of behaving
that is determined by the character of God. The way we can
achieve that way of behaving is by practicing the spiritual
disciplines. Another excellent resource is Richard Foster's
Celebration of Discipline.

Open Hearts Respite Update

Open Hearts Respite is a location that is provided for
persons to come and have a time of rest and refreshment
away from the routine of daily life. It is not just for
person who have memory impairment or some kind of
physical need - however that is one of many things the
program does offer.

A Hymn for Pentecost
Eighteenth-century brothers John and Charles Wesley,
co-founders of the Methodist Church, were prolific
hymn writers. At one point, they made a concerted
effort to increase the number of Pentecost-related
hymns available to worshipers.
Use Charles Wesley’s hymn “O Thou Who Camest
From Above” as a prayer that the Holy Spirit will burn
brightly in your heart and life today:
O Thou who camest from above,
the pure celestial fire to impart,
kindle a flame of sacred love
upon the mean altar of my heart.
There let it for thy glory burn
with inextinguishable blaze,
and trembling to its source return
in humble prayer and fervent praise.
Janet and Jan are doing a great job of recruiting and are
very enthusiastic as they gather a group together.
Maurice is anxious to have a reason to cook for a group.
We need the help of the membership to have people
coming and taking advantage of this mission outreach
until it can function on its own. It can be as structured
or relaxed as people want it to be.
The Evangelism Committee is encouraging our own
members to come on Tuesdays and Fridays and gather
with friends and neighbors. As long as we know you
are coming - Maurice will cook for us.
