Greetings from Administration
April 2015
The
weather is finally starting to break and in the land of the Huskies, things are as
productive as ever! The winter season saw many of our students reach new heights in
the classroom as 175 of our Huskies attained Honours status (75%) in their semester one
classes. On February 10th, a future crop of NHHS students visited the school for our
annual Open House. The group was treated to several teacher led workshops and a tour
of the school by our fearless Peer Mentors. Staff members were excited to meet the
grade 8 students who will soon fill their classes and programs. Congratulations go out to
Tori Wilkins who displayed her beautiful artwork with seven other Huskies at the annual
student exhibition at the Parrott Gallery in Belleville. Her graduation themed piece was
purchased and will be proudly displayed at the Education Centre for everyone to enjoy in
the years to come. Good job Tori!
Our local hockey rinks were filled with many celebrations this winter, including an
impressive run to an OMHA title for the Bancroft Peewee Jets. Although these players
won’t be landing at NHHS for a few years, some of our own athletes drew attention at
the Provincial and National levels of our country’s favourite pastime. Tori Howran was
recently informed that she has been invited to attend evaluation camps for the National
Women’s Under 18 Hockey Program. Tori is very excited about this opportunity and is
training hard for the first weekend camp which is coming up in May. Anthony Bertucca
also received some exciting news recently when he was selected by the Sarnia Sting in
this springs’ Ontario Hockey League draft. We wish these two Huskies the best of luck in
their hockey pursuits.
Our Outdoor Facilities Renewal Committee has also been hard at work pulling together
support to bring back a track and some improved bleachers for students, staff,
community members and of course, Husky fans. This year’s Husky Cash Grab will support
the committee and its work, so special thanks go out to everyone who has contributed.
Amongst the many duties that this group has assumed is the recruitment of community
partnerships to help with the project. Stay tuned for more exciting news from the front
lines at NHHS.
We hope that the 2014-15 semester two midterm report helps to clarify your student’s

Hospitality & Tourism Class
Chef John Schneeberger visited Mrs. Gillis’s
Hospitality and Tourism class with four second year
students from Loyalist College to assist him in
baking a special treat. The class made Apple
Fritters that even some lucky staff got to try and
they were out of this world good!

taking the time out of his busy schedule to work with the NHHS
students.

Life at NHHS
Prom Project
Prom Project 2015 was a huge success. Always a ‘feel good’ event, students
left the NHHS gym April 14th with smiles, new formal outfits, shirts, ties and
make up. Lucille Kyle and her brother Peter, with their flare
for design, had the NHHS stage and gym looking fancier than
“Le Chateau”.
This event began as an initiative organized by the Hastings
and Prince Edward Learning Foundation as a way to recycle
gently used formal wear. Community members donate items
they no longer need which are dry cleaned sorted and sent to
participating schools in Hastings County, including NHHS.
Schools also receive new dress shirts and ties for boys, and
Shoppers Drug Mart donates make-up for the ladies.
At Prom Project, boys and girls from grade 8 to grade 12, can
get a formal outfit for graduations, proms, family weddings, or
any other formal event they may be attending in the near
future. This event ensures that North Hastings students will
be the best dressed students around. Thanks to everyone who
attended the event, made a donation, and/or helped to make
the magic happen!
International Pink Day
Thanks to Staff and Students who supported
International Pink Day for Anti-Bullying on April 8th by
wearing pink.
France Trip March 2016
It is not too late to enroll in the trip to France planned for March 2016. This trip will take
students to Paris, the Loire Valley, and Normandy, where they will tour the Juno Beach
Centre. This is a fabulous opportunity. For information about costs and how to enroll,
please see Ms. Burbidge, Miss Carroll, or Mr. Levesque.
There will be an information meeting for students and parents who are not yet enrolled
on Thursday May 7th at 6:00-7:00pm in the library.

Life at NHHS
N.E.R.D.S.
This year in NERDS, we started off the semester setting up our new class room,
Room 109. In the next few days we learned about WHMIS, Standard First Aid and
CPR. The next week we started completing our weekly co-op hours at North Hastings
Community Fish Hatchery where we do inventory of the fish and clean the tanks. We
also take turns tying flies every Tuesday. The following week, we did team building
activities which included a group jump rope of 18 people, afterwards we did high
and low ropes at Camp Wanakita in Haliburton. In the third week of class, we
learned how to properly execute ice water rescues. We learned how to use a GPS
accurately along with a map and compass. Afterwards we learned how to track
under the guidance of Master Tracker Ethan Huner at the Lookout Point in
Algonquin Park. We also did a tour of Algonquin College where we watched and took
part in Logger Games. Shortly after, we learned Winter Survival Tactics with Officers
White and Kennedy on Dog Bay Road where we built a Signal Fire, Quincy, and an AFrame Shelter. The following week we started tapping trees at Camp Can-Aqua. We
went every day until the sap season was over to collect and measure the sap for a
climate change study for Wilfred Laurier University. We also helped the MNR with a
Deer Mortality Study which we completed on a weekly basis on snowmobiles, ATV’s
and on foot, in the North Baptiste Lake Deer Yard. We went to Ripley’s Aquarium
where we got to look at jellyfish, sharks, crabs, lobsters, and many other forms of
marine life. Last week we did tree identification where we learned how to tell
different types of trees apart such as oak, poplar, maple, ash, elm, tamarack, and
many others. After that we gathered spruce gum and young maples for the
traditional native spear making that we will be doing later in April. We also went to
Kevin Hockley’s Taxidermy workshop where we learned how to prepare and tan
deer hides. Later that day we cast plastic molds of various reptiles and amphibians
such as the Green Frog, Snapping Turtle, and Five Lined Skink. All-in-all, the first half
of the semester has been busy, full, and exciting!

Guidance News
Students must complete 40 hours of community service in order to be eligible to
graduate. Potential graduating students are reminded that their 40 hours of
community service must be completed by Friday, May 1st in order to be eligible to
graduate. Volunteer forms are available in Student Services or on the North Hastings
High School web-site under “Husky Information for Students” → “Forms”.

NHHS Sports
Wrestling
Husky Wrestilng had an amazing year taking 18 wrestlers to
COSSA. After dominating COSSA and taking home the
overall points and boys trophy, they moved on to OFSAA.
10 wrestlers went to Windsor Ontario for 2 full days to
wrestle the finest in the province. No other team in our
region took so many wrestlers to the provincial event.
Although medals alluded us this year we are looking
forward to making up for that next year. Many thanks to
the coaches Mr. Collins, Mr. Isaak and Mr. Roulston.
Track and Field
Track and Field Athletes have been practicing for a variety of
events since the middle of February; indoors when the weather
is not cooperating and outdoors on those nice days which are
few and far between. In the photos the athletes are training
with a variety of drills to help build stamina for competition
starting in May. It looks to be a great year with approximately
40 athletes competing !

NHHS Husky Cash Grab Fundraiser
THE BIG SCHOOL FUNDRAISER

The ultimate Huskies’ Cash Grab is here! This is our biggest school fundraiser of the year
and our goal is to raise funds for
improvements to our outdoor facilities,
which will aim to include: a new running
track , bleachers, a jumping pit and a new
throwing circle/area.
This is a calendar draw for cash prizes on a of
school days during the month of May. There
are nineteen (19) days that you are able to
win cash or prizes, with values ranging from
$50.00 to $100.00. Our final draw date is on
May 29th and it will be for $500.00 big
ones!

Battle of the books
From January 5 through to June 5, NHHS is competing with Centre Hastings High
School in a BATTLE OF THE BOOKS to see which school can read the most FICTION
books in that 5 month period.

Congratulations to…….
Jesse Mercier -Random Acts of Kindness
Once again NHHS has shown that it is a place of acceptance and kindness. In March,
the entire school got together and nominated their fellow student Jesse Mercier
for the High School Kindness Citizen of the Year Award. Jesse is described as the
nicest, kindest boy with the biggest heart. He is always there to lend a hand and is
famous for holding doors open for everyone, always with a smile on his face. He
admits it wasn't always like that, when he was younger he was often picked on for
being different and that’s because Jessie has a learning disability. A few years back,
Jesse watched a video in a school assembly about a young lad who was determined
to make a difference in his High School through kindness. The idea was set in his
mind and Jesse realized he could do the same thing. People would smile back and
say “thank you” when he held open doors. That gave him a purpose and happiness.
In addition to receiving the award from Principal Dostaler at the high school, he
also received the award at the Kindness Court of Quinte Mall. “It was the best
moment of my Life” Jesse exclaimed.
Way to go Jesse, we are very proud!
Victoria (Tori) Howran
Congratulations to grade 11 NHHS student Tori Howran who will be attending a
conditioning camp with the Canadian Under 18 Women’s Hockey Team May 6-10th in
Hamilton. Tori currently plays on the Whitby Junior Wolves Women's Team and the
Bancroft Midget Jets Team.

Congratulations to grade 10 NHHS student Anthony Bertucca who
has been drafted by the OHL’s Sarnia Sting Team. He will begin
training camps April 24th.
Anthony currently plays goalie for the Quinte Red Devils Minor Midget
team in Belleville.

Shawn Bruce-Welding Skills Competition
Each year, talented Tech students from HPEDSB can compete at the Ontario
Technological Skills Qualifying Competition (OTSC) for the opportunity to
represent our Board at the Ontario Skills Competition. Shawn Bruce
represented NHHS in Welding and clinched 3rd place this year. He is now getting
ready for the All Ontario competition on May 4-5 which will be held in
Kitchener-Waterloo. Gold medal winners at this event earn the right to
showcase their abilities on a national stage, Skills Canada National Competition,
which will take place May 27-30, 2015 in beautiful Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
The Huskies wish Shawn the best of luck as he keeps melting that stuff
together.
