There is an expression in Italian - "la piazza e fatta per tutti" - that translates as "this square is for everyone". Casa Mia is that piazza. The renowned Niagara restaurant, which has been owned and operated by the Mollica family for the past 25 years, serves as a gathering place for food lovers who pay homage to the creativity, flair and culinary expression that defines matriarch and chef Luciana Mollica. Casa Mia, which has become a hallmark of Italian cuisine, is also about a pilgrimage. It's been a long journey for Lucianna who arrived here from long ago humble beginnings in Europe in search of a better life. It's about the present day pilgrimage of farmers to the kitchen door, knowing that the quality herbs, meats, fruits and vegetables grown or raised on their own land are welcome and wanted here. Together with son Claudio, the two manage to make the foods of Casa Mia exciting and fun. 3518 Portage Road Niagara Falls, Ontario Directions - From NOTL : Take QEW Niagara to Mountain Road Exit. SMART CASUAL 28 75 Queen Street 905-468-4TEA (4832) P.O. Box 4 Born and raised in the village of Claudy in Ireland, Pat Henry (Grieve) started cooking from a very early age. Her inspiration and mentor was her mother Mona, who herself spent many years in catering. Being one of seven children, Pat loved to spend time in the kitchen with her mother, and it was no surprise that she eventually chose a career in catering. Pat is a graduate of the renowned Portrush Catering College situated on the scenic north coast of Ireland. She has worked in several restaurants in Ireland and New Zealand, but always had a desire to own a traditional Irish Tea Room where she could recreate the quality of home cooked food and friendly atmosphere found in Ireland during her childhood. And so was born The Irish Team Room! The name reflects Pat's philosophy of life…. Honest and straight to the point! Come and experience “a wee taste of Ireland in Niagara-on-theLake!” 29 The Pie Plate Bakery & Cafe 1516 Niagara Stone Road Virgil, ON L0S 1T0 (905) 468-9-PIE Baking has always been one of Ruth Anne Schriefer's foremost passions. Growing up having free range in the kitchen gave her room to experiment with any new recipe she could find using her four brothers as taste-testers. But enjoying Ruth Anne's tasty creations usually resulted in one of her family members cleaning up the mess left behind. Ruth Anne learned traditional German-Mennonite recipes from her grandmother who would use the palm of her hand or a coffee cup to measure ingredients. Ruth Anne's love and pride for Niagara fruit developed during her teens, as she helped out on her parent's small fruit farm. She still insists there isn't a better breakfast experience than walking out in the cool morning dew to pick a juicy ripe peach from the tree to slice on your Corn Flakes. Ruth Anne's culinary skills were honed as she often opted to leave the orchard early to prepare supper for her family of seven, which would inevitably include a delicious fruit pie for dessert. When a new family moved in next door, she invited them over for coffee and dessert, which was, of course, apple crumble pie. It turned out that neighbour just so happened to be the new chef at a local winery restaurant. He liked her pies so much he featured it on the dessert menu: "Ruth Anne's Home Made Niagara Fruit Pie." This same chef was a great encouragement in making the decision to pursue the opening of The Pie Plate Bakery & Café. 30 Coach & Horses Pub Queen Street 1-888-669-5566 A full menu for lunch and dinner is now offered on-site at Moffat Inn. Established in 1789 and rebuilt in 1816 after the War of 1812, The Olde Angel Inn is a perennial favourite among locals and tourists alike. Boasting a lively English-style pub, quaint dining room and private function room (familiarily known as the "snug") Please come and enjoy our hearty food and endless hospitality. Who knows, you may even have a run-in with our resident ghost - Captain Swayze. Ghost Story! There is a popular local legend (that shows up in accounts dating to the 1820's) of an unfortunate Canadian militia officer who was killed at the Inn during the American invasion of May, 1813. Captain Colin Swayze had delayed joining the British retreat in order to rendezvous with a young woman, believed to be his true love. Surprised by American soldiers sent to search the Inn, he hid in an empty barrel in the cellar. The invaders used bayonets to prod into every corner and possible place of concealment and the unlucky lover received a fatal wound. Some believe the Ghost of Captain Swayze is fated to walk the Inn at night, perhaps in longing for his sweetheart. There have been reports of noises coming from the empty(?) dining room, rearranged place settings, and other unexplained occurrences. It is said that his ghost will remain harmless as long as the British flag flies over the Inn, a precaution prudently taken by the proprietor. 32 The Irish Harp Pub 245 King Street Niagara-on-the-Lake Type to enter text Welcome to The Irish Harp Pub! Designed to traditional Irish standards, the Irish Harp Pub offers great food, great beer, great whiskey and old-fashioned Irish “craic” (fun and chat). The craic is a spirit. An essence you can sense in a busy pub. The craic is impossible to bottle but somehow we manage to do just that. Most Irish pubs started as spirit grocers. The Irish Harp Pub is located on what used to be the local grocery store, built in 1913. The original owner, Trevor Smyth lovingly restored the old building in 2006 to what you see today. Trevor came from County Derry in Ireland and has brought to Niagara-on-the-Lake the traditions and spirit of the Emerald Isle. So come on down, try our food and have an unforgettable time at the Irish Harp Pub! 33 358 Mary Street Niagara On The Lake 905-468-8727 Offers TVs, pool tables, great home-style meals Dietsch brothers Matthew and Paul opened the Sandtrap Pub and Grill on June 8th, 2012 after years of dreaming of owning their own place together. These forces included British regulars, local militia, aboriginal warriors, and Runchey's corps of freed slaves. Major General Sir Isaac Brock, "the saviour of Upper Canada" served here until his death at the Battle of Queenston Heights in October, 1812. Brock and his aide-de-camp John Macdonell were initially buried within the fort. Fort George was destroyed by American artillery fire and captured during the Battle of Fort George in May 1813. The U.S. forces used the fort as a base to invade the rest of Upper Canada, however, they were repulsed at the Battles of Stoney Creek and Beaver Dams. After a seven month occupation, the fort was retaken in December and remained in British hands for the remainder of the war. After the war, the fort was partially rebuilt, and by the 1820's it was falling into ruins. It was finally abandoned in favour of a more strategic installation at Fort Mississauga and a more protected one at Butler's Barracks. 72 The Niagara Apothecary Museum 5 Queen St, Niagara-on-the-Lake Phone: (905) 468-3845 Step through the doors of the Niagara Apothecary and see how pharmacists practiced their profession over 100 years ago. Liquor by the barrel or the bottle (and even by the glass), flavourings, paints, dyes, leeches, tobacco and snuff – these were the stock-in-trade of a 19th-century pharmacy. You'll see rows of patent medicines, "miracle cure-alls" for everything from hair loss to tuberculosis. The only restorative ingredients in most patent remedies of the time were opiates and alcohol, so pharmacists were handy with a mortar and pestle to custom-make prescriptions. The Niagara Apothecary opened its doors at this location in the late 1860s. It operated for over 100 years under a succession of six owners, closing in 1964. The Ontario Heritage Trust acquired the property, led its restoration and opened it as a museum in 1971. The original interior fittings of the Apothecary, all in use until 1964, have been painstakingly restored. The hub of the Apothecary was the ornately carved dispensary, which dominates the rear of the museum. With the exception of certain proprietary drugs, even pills were made at the dispensary. The Niagara Apothecary is an authentic museum restoration of a 1869 pharmacy as part of a practice that operated in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, from 1820 to 1964. We are open daily from Mother's Day weekend to Labour Day, then weekends to Canadian Thanksgiving (second Monday in October). 73 The story of the War of 1812 This year 2013, marks the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812.
