About the
Ackerman
Institute’s Gender
& Family Project
The Ackerman Institute’s Gender & Family
Project (GFP) empowers youth, families and
communities by providing gender affirmative
services, training and research. GFP promotes
gender inclusivity as a form of social justice in
all the systems involved in the life of the family.
Directed by Jean Malpas, an international
expert on gender and sexuality, GFP is a
unique program in New York City, that offers
multidisciplinary family-oriented services
to gender nonconforming youth, including
children under 13. Affirmative services include:
• • • • • Support group for parents
Play group for children
Sibling Group
Support group for adolescents
Spanish-speaking support and play groups
• • • • • • Psychological evaluation
Family therapy and parental coaching
Gender inclusivity training for schools,
Training for health professionals
Liaising for medical and legal referrals
Research on the needs of trans youth
and families.
Over the past two years only, GFP has:
• Serviced more than 70 families
• Trained more than 500 professionals
• Provided comprehensive training to half
a dozen public and private schools
• Co-sponsored a family conference attended
by 489 professionals and family members
• Been presented to professional audiences in
Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Thailand, Turkey
and around the U.S.
GFP is a project of The Ackerman Institute
for the Family. Founded in 1960, the Ackerman
Institute for the Family is one of the premier
institutions for family therapy and one of the
most highly regarded training facilities for
family therapists in the United States.

needs of gender
expansive youth
and families
Children and adolescent who do not fit in the
typical male/female categories are at greater
risk of facing discrimination, bullying and
suicide. They need intentional support to
make their daily lives safe and welcoming.
Some parents find it easier to embrace
gender-variance while others find themselves
uncertain as to how to best protect and
nurture a young person with gender
fluidity. They often feel concerned, isolated,
and struggle to find other families who
understand their dilemmas and celebrate their
accomplishments.
family-centered
services
Research shows unmistakably that family
acceptance is one of the best preventive
factors for mental health issues and other
life hurdles. The Gender & Family Project
provides support to every family member and
promotes positive parent/child relationships.
GFP supports the entire family through
gender exploration and transition. Our
family therapists can help strengthen family
relationships while exploring genderrelated or any other relevant challenges for
the entire family. Our approach to family
therapy and parental coaching is steeped in
a deep understanding of research on gender
development as well as a belief in family
resilience and connection as core factors for
health and well being.
spanish-speaking
services
How do Latino families navigate multiple
cultures of gender? How can they affirm
children while their extended family is abroad
and does not always understand issues related
to gender identity and fluidity? Spanishspeaking and immigrant families deserve a
space where they can express themselves
in their first language as well as where the
complexities of acculturation, cross-cultural
and multigenerational challenges can be
understood. GFP is meeting this critical need
by opening a multi-family group for Spanishspeaking families and children.
gender inclusivity
training
GFP offers consultation, training and
resources to create gender inclusive schools.
Programs aim at collaborating with the school
administration, faculty, and staff to deepen
their understanding of gender diversity and
its connection to academic and emotional
success for all students. GFP supports schools
to create or enhance an atmosphere of respect
and safety in which optimal learning can
be achieved. Training and education is also
available for parents and students of all ages.
