Selected Press About the Ackerman Institute’s Gender & Family Project The Ackerman Institute’s Gender & Family Project (GFP) empowers youth, families and communities by providing gender affirmative services, training and research. GFP promotes gender inclusivity as a form of social justice in all the systems involved in the life of the family. Directed by Jean Malpas, an international expert on gender and sexuality, GFP is a unique program in New York City, that offers multidisciplinary family-oriented services to gender nonconforming youth, including children under 13. Over the past two years only, GFP has: • Serviced more than 70 families • Trained more than 500 professionals • Provided comprehensive training to half a dozen public and private schools • Co-sponsored a family conference attended by 489 professionals and family members • Been presented to professional audiences in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Thailand, Turkey and around the U.S. GFP is a project of The Ackerman Institute for the Family. They need intentional support to make their daily lives safe and welcoming. Some parents find it easier to embrace gender-variance while others find themselves uncertain as to how to best protect and nurture a young person with gender fluidity. They often feel concerned, isolated, and struggle to find other families who understand their dilemmas and celebrate their accomplishments. family-centered services Research shows unmistakably that family acceptance is one of the best preventive factors for mental health issues and other life hurdles. The Gender & Family Project provides support to every family member and promotes positive parent/child relationships. GFP supports the entire family through gender exploration and transition. Our family therapists can help strengthen family relationships while exploring genderrelated or any other relevant challenges for the entire family. Our approach to family therapy and parental coaching is steeped in a deep understanding of research on gender development as well as a belief in family resilience and connection as core factors for health and well being. spanish-speaking services How do Latino families navigate multiple cultures of gender? How can they affirm children while their extended family is abroad and does not always understand issues related to gender identity and fluidity? Spanishspeaking and immigrant families deserve a space where they can express themselves in their first language as well as where the complexities of acculturation, cross-cultural and multigenerational challenges can be understood. GFP is meeting this critical need by opening a multi-family group for Spanishspeaking families and children. gender inclusivity training GFP offers consultation, training and resources to create gender inclusive schools. Programs aim at collaborating with the school administration, faculty, and staff to deepen their understanding of gender diversity and its connection to academic and emotional success for all students.
