“Democracy cannot succeed unless
those who express their choice are
prepared to choose wisely. The real
safeguard of democracy,
therefore, is education.”
— Franklin D. Roosevelt
POLS 150 Honors: Democracy in America
This discussion-based class explores the relationship between the foundation of our democracy and
the ideological clashes that arise as they relate to current events. View the hot-button issues of today
within in the context of the laws and ideas that have shaped American government. This course is not
merely a historical review, but an active conversation on how the founder’s ideas continue to
influence political discourse of today and what that means for our future.
The course is taught by Dr. Adam Seagrave of the Political Science department. Dr. Seagrave earned
his PhD at University of Notre Dame and specializes in Political Philosophy and American Political
Thought. He is the editor of Liberty and Equality: The American Conversation and author of The
Foundations of Natural Morality: On the Compatibility of Natural Rights and the Natural Law.
POLS 150H satisfies three credit hours towards general education/PLUS course requirement at
Northern Illinois University. In addition, POLS 150H also fulfills three credit hours of the Lower
Division Honors requirements.
