State Senator Michael Noland has committed his life to serving his community. He was raised in Illinois, and has called Elgin his home for 38 years. Growing up, he and his family often struggled to make ends meet and by the age of 8 he was shining shoes to help support his family. After graduating high school, Noland joined the Navy, serving as a hospital corpsman. While serving his country he earned multiple citations including the National Defense Medal, the Navy Marksman rating, and the Good Conduct Badge. He also received letters of commendation and appreciation for stateside service during the Gulf War. During his time in the Navy he began his higher education by attending community college at night. After the Navy, Noland knew that he needed to continue his education so he began his undergraduate work at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). Like many college students, he needed to support himself while attending classes and did so by working as a chauffer. Noland eventually earned a BA and MBA from UIC, and a JD from John Marshall Law School. As an attorney, he has worked as a public defender, and later in private practice where he has defended hundreds of clients, many of which pro-‐bono. Noland and his wife Veronica reside on the northeast side of Elgin with their two children. Serving in the Illinois Senate since 2007, Noland has been an outspoken advocate for education funding reform, economic development, ethics reform, promoting clean energy, and stamping out hunger. Recognizing the support that he has received throughout his life from others, he understands how those values of caring help pave the way to the American dream for all Americans. • Advocating for Universal Health Care – Noland believes that universal health care is a basic human right. In 2011 he proposed legislation that would amend the state constitution to ensure that the state implemented a system to provide universal health care throughout Illinois. He continues his support for full access to health care for all. • Standing up for a Progressive Income Tax – Illinois has one of the lowest income taxes for individuals and corporations in the nation. Noland has been a long time proponent of a progressive income tax, which he sees as necessary to lighten the burden on the middle class while expanding Illinois’ economy. • Ethics in Government – Illinois has a long history of corrupt politicians. Noland believes that one of the major causes has been the uncontrollable flood of special interest money into Illinois politics. He was the lead sponsor of legislation that, for the first time in state history, introduced campaign contribution limits. • Protecting our Natural Treasures – Noland believes in promoting responsible stewardship of our shared environment. He has been a leader on environmental issues and has a lifetime rating of 88% from the Illinois Environmental Council. • Supporting a Women’s Right to Choose – Noland has been a constant supporter of women’s rights. Throughout his tenure in the State Senate he has 100% voting record with Planned Parenthood. Once elected to Congress, Noland will continue the fight for Universal Health Care, Tax Reform, Ethics in Government, Protecting our Environment and our Communities. Yet, perhaps most importantly, as congressman, Michael Noland will help restore our faith in Washington. www.nolandforcongress.com Paid for by Noland for Congress Exploratory Committee
