taking advantage of the many summer class options. As you study this
summer, don’t forget to take a break and enjoy yourself, too.

offered each Thursday evening. Bring your lawn chairs, a blanket, snacks,
drinks, and family or friends to enjoy an evening of great music on the

May was full of celebratory events, as more
than 5,000 students graduated from the SIU
system. If you were a recent graduate, we
welcome you to the SIU alumni family and
hope you take advantage of your

many of you are taking advantage of summer

summer on-campus, online or off-site class,

For those of you transitioning to SIU in the
fall, Non-Traditional Student Services and
Veteran’s Services have teamed up for the
first-ever “Boot camp for Education Success
Training” (BEST) program on Saturday, Aug.
8, at the SIU Carbondale campus. The BEST
program features sessions to help you make a
successful transition to SIU, including
technology tutorials, college writing tips, a
math refresher, academic support services,
time management and much more. Don’t miss
this opportunity to get a head start on your
semester!
Space is limited, so reserve your space today

includes lunch.

Volunteerism
Are you looking to serve your community in an
incredibly rewarding way this summer?
The Center for Service-Learning &
Volunteerism (CSLV) in the Student Services
Building can help you get started.
Here’s a checklist on how to get started giving back to
the community in which you plan to be this summer:

Check the list of approved volunteer
opportunities available at www.cslv.siu.edu.
 Check to see whether the agency you previously or
currently volunteer for can be approved, as well as
service hours completed.
 Call the community agency to notify them of your
participation.
 Pick up the SVC documentation form from the
CSLV office or Web page.
If you complete service hours, you may be able to get them
approved through the CSLV office!
The Benefits of Volunteering
Check out the SIU’s Student Recreation Center’s youth events for many
fun activities to get your children up and moving this summer!
Remember, dependent memberships for children are just $15 per
semester. Whether you have one child or several, the price is still $15!
What a great deal! Secondary memberships for a spouse or partner are

SIU is Going Smoke-Free!
On July 1, SIU will become a smoke-free campus. This means that smoking
will be prohibited on all campus property, including buildings, grounds,
parking lots, and university-owned or university-operated vehicles.
You can learn more about SIU’s smoke-free campus initiative through FAQs
and other resources, including information to assist those who choose to quit
smoking, at smokefree.siu.edu.
Monthly Contest
Last month’s contest question was, “What year did the first class of SIU graduate?”
According to Betty Mitchell’s book, “Southern Illinois University: A Pictorial
History,” the answer is, “1876.” This question proved to be a stumper, as none of
the contest submissions were correct.
For the next couple of months, we take a break from SIU history and start our
“Where was this taken?” series. If you can identify where our photo was taken, email
the location to [email protected] to be entered into our monthly contest.
HINT: It’s one of the locations for this summer’s Sunset Concert series.
