Thanks so much for allowing me to
congratulate you on a wonderful staff

On Wednesday, March 25th, I
bought a new dishwasher from Home
Depot. The service I received was
excellent. When I entered Home
Depot, I had already been to two other
places, and been treated abruptly by
staff. In one location, I could only
look at a picture of a dishwasher that
I thought I might like to buy.
When I arrived at Home Depot, my
husband I and were opening dishwashers, looking at the options, etc.,
and she came over to us, and discussed what we really needed. We
were clear on what we wanted, and
somehow, very gently, she gave us
suggestions on specifics we might
want to try. She didn't try to push us
to buy the most expensive one, but
one that would meet our needs. She
helped complete the paperwork, did
not rush us, and yet, we were in and
out of the store in less than 45 minutes. AND, we even felt good about
spending more than we budgeted, lol.

The Annual General Meeting of the North Bay & District
Chamber of Commerce was held last Thursday, April 9,
2015. Special guests in attendance included the following Past President: Mr. Bryan Manson (1973), Mr.

President Jake Lacourse highlighted some of last year’s
events as he took over as President for outgoing
President Derek Shogren. He noted this was certainly
a year with a number of changes, a new focus on
advocacy and certainly a number of new initiatives.
Mr. Lacourse stated that the 2015 board has restructured the committees under four pillars: Advocacy,
Connectivity, Growth and Value. Late last year, we
welcomed members from the Mattawa area under
the umbrella of the North Bay & District Chamber of
Commerce. A few of the exciting initiatives are the
Employment Innovation program that is now in it’s 8th
year; the Investment Attraction program that assists in
recognizing opportunities or threats to businesses; and
the largest project currently is the Tourism Capacity
Building Initiative, that will move forward to have

tourism spending.
Treasurer Charles Elliott gave a recap of the Chamber’s
healthy financial position. At year end 2014, a small
deficit was realized of just over $4,000. The budgeted
amount for 2014 would have met it’s target, however
the board had determined that supporting a Sport

Dear Chamber Members,
In an effort to promote innovative learning experiences and build professional capacity, I am pleased to describe two Environmental
Education Leadership and Sustainability Initiatives that have been recognized as exemplary by the Ontario Public School Boards’
Association, and for which my academic abstract submissions were accepted for presentation at the World Environmental Education
Congress Conference this year held in Gothenburg, Sweden June 29-July 2nd, 2015.
“Schools have a vital role to play in preparing our
young people to take their place as informed, engaged, and empowered citizens
who will be pivotal in shaping the future of our communities, our province, our country, and our global environment.”
From Ontario Ministry of Education, Shaping Our Schools, Shaping Our Future (2007), p. 1
The first of two celebrated initiatives is the Educating for Environment (E4E) Partnership between the Schulich School of Education
at Nipissing University and the Near North District School Board in its third year. It’s purpose is to build professional capacity in
Environmental Education for both classroom teachers and teacher candidates. Over the course of a month in the spring a small
group of teacher candidates, under the guidance of Drs. Astrid Steele and Jeff Scott (Schulich School of Education), and myself as
Program Coordinator for the Near North District School Board, offer a series of indoor and outdoor learning experiences for students
in selected schools.
Funding is shared by Ministry of Education Outdoor Education Funding and the Schulich School of Education, to ensure educator
release, transportation costs, sustainable use of natural and accessible resources (human and material) and digital publication of
documentation. Please visit the hyperlinks below to view documentation of the E4E Program: E4E Mattawa Project 2013: Working
with a School as a Community http://www.nearnorthschools.ca/documents/e4e-2013.pdf and Educating for Environment (E4E)
2014: Nipissing University and Phelps Central Public School http://www.nearnorthschools.ca/documents/e4e-2014.pdf
The second project is the Near North District School Board Outdoor Environmental Inquiry Initiative. It is intended to build
professional capacity in Environmental Education in sustainable ways throughout the district, and engage educators, students and
parents in inquiry about, for and in their environment. This initiative is coordinated over a period of 3 weeks during which time
champion facilitators engage educators in co-constructed, outdoor environmental inquiry. Mentor educators further engage mentee
partners in co-planning inquiry-based learning in response to their students’ interests and wonderings in their local environments
while informing and engaging parents along the journey.
Each year principals and educators from other elementary schools throughout the Board are invited to participate and the journey is
aligned with each school’s School Improvement Planning. In this way we intentionally plan for program sustainability for our young
global stewards of today and parents of stewards tomorrow.
To view documentation of the Near North District School Board Outdoor Environmental Inquiry 2014 Initiative please visit:
http://www.nearnorthschools.ca/documents/outdoor-inquiry-2014.pdf
How do we know our impact on student learning?
 Educators documented an increase in student knowledge, skills and articulated perspectives that foster environmental stewardship.
 Documentation— student thinking visible is evidence of students’ increased capacity to take action on locally relevant environment issues.
 Leadership support and facilitated modeling, is building professional capacity by way of gradual acceptance of Environmental Education
instructional strategies, and leading to an increase in time spent learning about, for and in the natural environment.
 Educators are collaborating (face to face and online) and sharing experience and documented evidence of learning leading to an increase in
environmental inquiry-based learning.
 The annual documentation of the journey is provoking further professional dialogue and reflection, and each year new schools invited to engage in the EE initiatives that benefit pre and in-service educators, students, parents and school communities.
I was invited and encouraged to submit abstracts to the World Environmental Education Congress conference as an opportunity to bring our innovative partnership projects to a global stage. I, myself, as a professional learner alongside students and educators, always welcome the opportunity to
bring learning to a diverse audience where we can learn from new perspectives, expand horizons and view ourselves as global citizens. It is my hope
that there may be avenues to explore for funding to support the journey to Sweden where we bring voice from North Bay and Area to the international stage. Unfortunately at this time there are no available funds through Nipissing University or the Near North District School Board to support
the travel, accommodations or registration fee for the global conference. The registration as a presenter is $800 alone. I’m hopeful that, as a NNDSB
member of the Chamber of Commerce, there may be businesses that connect with the focus of the conference and would welcome the opportunity
to promote their business logo and profile on a world forum. I would be very appreciative of any business donation toward the expenses of this
journey to share innovative Environmental Education practice at the World Environmental Education Congress conference.
Should more information be required, I would be pleased to meet or speak with you to this regard and can be reached at the contact
information below. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.
