Notes from May’s Board Meeting Vice President Steve Dreany updated the board regarding the recent Ontario Chamber of Commerce Annual General Meeting and was pleased with the policy sessions. He stated “all Chambers are recognizing the important role that advocacy plays for our member businesses.” Items that were discussed for policy included the Energy East pipeline and it’s importance to businesses across the province, the restructuring of WSIB that has hindered owners in companies, the Ontario Registered Pension Plan that is being considered and will add additional costs to doing business, energy prices and labour issues. the development and implementation of the new EDC as a positive step to get ahead of other communities that are vying for additional economic development and investment in their communities. Ontario Northland Interim President and CEO Corina Moore and Communication Manager Rebecca McGlynn attended the May board meeting to present the new “Moving Forward Transformation Plan”. Recognizing the importance of Ontario Northland to all of Northeastern Ontario, the plan is seeking viability in a number of their core business operations such as train freight, bus service and the state-of-the-art refurbishment operations here in The City of North Bay is North Bay. The Chamber board moving forward with the implementation of an Economic unanimously supported moving forward with the plan over the Development Corporation, a definite asset to assist the great next few months with the new Economic Development team at Ontario Northland board and the City. The CAO, Mayor and look forward to input from the public to make a viable plan Manager of ED attended the over the coming years. May board meeting to outline the new corporation. The Chamber board fully supported President Jake Lacourse congratulated Burrows Country Store and Garden Centre on their recent 100th anniversary celebration. Other congratulations went to the City and other government agencies that participated in the recent Reverse Trade Show for businesses wanting to do business with government, to understand tendering, rfp requirements, etc.; to the North Bay District MultiCultural Centre on the recent opening of the business incubator, Genesis@304; the Capitol Centre on their 2015/2016 launch; the impressive fundraiser of the North Bay & Area Community Foundation Gala Dinner; the Sport Tourism team for their recent announcement of 17 OFSSA events secured for the city; and finally the Honourary Colonels and CFB North Bay - 22 Wing on organizing the upcoming Armed Forces Day on June 3, 2015 at the waterfront. Armed Forces Day are celebrating along with the PanAm Torch Relay that day with a special visit by the Snowbirds. The event starts at 11 am on the waterfront until 1:30 pm. Ontario Northland is an essential part of the transportation sector in Northeastern Ontario and with the past uncertainty, it looks like the board is ready to turn its’ viability and sustainability in the future in a positive direction. Richardson has been recognized by Kiwanis as Citizen of the Year for 2015. Nominated three times previously, and quietly declined by Mr. Richardson, this year being the 30th year for Citizen of the Year in North Bay, and the 100th year for Kiwanis, it was decided with his recent passing that this would be an appropriate occasion to recognize John’s history of commitment to North Bay.
