Barilla America is preparing to relocate its corporate headquarters from Bannockburn into space previously occupied by Nestle Pizza, at 885 Sunset Ridge Road sometime before the end of August. Barilla, a manufacturer of pasta, sauces and bakery products, plans to lease the 75,000 square foot building and relocate its 150 employees to the new site. The twostory, recently renovated facility features a full test kitchen and pilot plant capabilities. Barilla officials announced that the company will be making renovations to the facility over the next four months “to align with our strong brand identity, growth strategies and consumer and customer innovation aspirations.” “The move to Northbrook signifies an exciting new chapter for Barilla’s Region Americas Operations, and we look forward to partnering with the Northbrook community in the coming months and in the foreseeable future,” according to the official statement announcing the move. Village Trustees helped pave the way for the move by unanimously approving a resolution to allow Barilla to assume the Cook County Class 6b property tax incentive for the site that was originally granted to Nestle USA Inc. in 2010. Ablin heads up the Asset Allocation, Mutual Fund Re-Optimization and Harriscreen Stock Selection Committees and is responsible for establishing investment policy and strategy within BMO Private Bank throughout the U.S. Ablin is expected to comment on U.S. economic growth, and its impact on consumer confidence. He will also share his insight on important factors affecting the domestic economy such as the pace of job growth, crude oil prices which have dropped dramatically, and the resurgence of domestic production of crude oil. The impact of technology and innovation, and its impact on job growth is also something he will evaluate. Ablin will address the Central Bank policies and whether the Federal Reserve's bond-buying stimulus program, or quantitative easing program QE3 has worked. He will also discuss whether the Jack Ablin, Chief Investment Officer BMO Private Bank Fed's low rates have prompted households to borrow. The affordability of the U.S. housing market from a domestic and global perspective will also be an important part of the presentation. Other questions he will answer include: Is the economy growing at a fast enough pace? Will the U.S. take a back seat to international markets? Does emerging market momentum need to turn higher? In light of all of these factors, what is a good investment strategy? It’s a great testament to Northbrook that our Village elected officials and staff regularly listen and consider recommendations from not only the Chamber, but the Village’s EDC and ICDC as a way to keep its finger on the pulse of the business community. In addition, the Chamber strives to make area residents more aware of the important role businesses play here in Northbrook. Everything from the Live Shop Dine marketing partnership with the Village to the Chamber’s annual Business Awards program sends a message about how important our businesses are to the well being of our community. This spring, the Chamber is pleased to be working with members of ICDC to interview a number of Northbrook companies to obtain critical feedback on the local business environment. This is a tremendous opportunity to identify and implement policies that will foster the growth of businesses. A healthy, robust business climate is in the best interest of all of us and I look forward to sharing feedback from our survey participants with our elected BOARD OF DIRECTORS officials and local leadership. Since the news of Plunkett Furniture closing its doors on Skokie Boulevard, there has been a series of highs and lows with regard to the use of the property. There was considerable excitement when Nestle Pizza decided, with the help of a 6b tax incentive, to move its frozen pizza headquarters into the building in 2010. The site was renovated to include a test kitchen and adapted for their unique needs. But it was disappointing when Nestle made the decision to move its Northbrook operation out of state last year, leaving the building vacant again. But as the expression goes, when one door closes, another door opens. Hardly a year later we are now delighted to learn that Barilla, an outstanding company with a national presence, has chosen to move its corporate headquarters into the very same building, which is perfectly suited for them. Because of the similarities between the two companies, it should be a relatively seamless transition. Northbrook is fortunate to have the kind of economic climate to attract a world class leader such as Barilla. This move brings new jobs into our community, new tax dollars, and most importantly, a world class company to add to our landscape. The Chamber will play an important role in the process, gathering and consolidating the information into a report of general findings for the ICDC. The survey results will be used to evaluate whether there are issues the Village or the Chamber need to address, or if there is a need for additional surveys or focus groups. The ICDC carefully selected a cross section of businesses of varying sizes and sectors as well as businesses located in different geographic areas of the community to participate in the survey. Members of the ICDC will conduct one-on-one interviews with owners and managers of these companies to assess the challenges they may be facing in their operations and whether the Village can assist in alleviating any impediments. The interviews will cover a wide range of topics including issues related to recruiting and retaining quality employees, transportation and utilities. An important part of the conversation will cover municipal services. These business leaders will be asked to discuss their interaction with the Village departments including police, fire and public works. They will also be asked to provide comments on the Village regulatory environment. ICDC Chair Pat Lederer notes that the survey will help the ICDC in its role as an advisor to the Village President and Board of Trustees, helping to ensure Northbrook Village will "Go Green" for Earth Day Festivities There will be plenty of fresh ideas, free giveaways, and cost effective, earth-friendly ways to conserve energy, save money and help the environment at Northbrook’s 45th Earth and Arbor Day celebration. Village Green Park Saturday, April 25 9:00 a.m. - Noon In addition to a number of recycling opportunities, the event will feature over 50 exhibitors promoting earth-friendly ideas and concepts for homes or businesses to conserve energy. The latest in home weatherization measures, renewable energy concepts, information on regional organic farming, updates from local utilities, and environmentally friendly products will be among highlights. Go Green Northbrook will hold a children’s fair, providing educational and fun activities for kids to learn about outdoor activities and the environment. Additionally, Lifesource will hold a Blood Drive during the event in the Village Green Center building next to the Vendor Expo. Donations of new and used household items will be donated to area charities. Residential on-site document shredding will be available as well. The 6b program reduces the overall property tax bill for industrial and warehouse buildings over the course of 12 years. Under the program, properties receiving a Class 6b are assessed at 10% of market value for the first 10 years, 15% in the 11th year and 20% in the 12th year. In year 13, the property is assessed at the normal assessed value of 25% of market value. The 6b for the property was granted only to that portion of the building where improvements were made. The property has remained vacant since Nestle moved its corporate headquarters to Ohio in mid 2014. Prior to Nestle, the building housed Plunkett Furniture. Barilla, a privately owned company, is a leader in the markets for pasta worldwide. For almost 140 years the company has been run by four generations of the Barilla family. Barilla pasta sold in the United States is made in its manufacturing plant in Ames, Iowa on machines replicating the original plant in Parma, Italy.
