With such outstanding team support we are confident that our students will do their best with showing “what they know.” We will continue to communicate information and resources available for parents and guardians in regards to the up-coming District and State Level Assessments. You can locate practice items related to the assessments that your child(ren) will be taking over the next few months through the web-link provided in the next article. Also available at this site is more information about the progression from the Transitional Colorado Assessment Program (TCAP) to the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC). The PARCC evaluations assess skills for all students in 6 th through 8th grades in Language Arts and Mathematics. Students in 7th and 8th grades will also participate in the Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) assessments; 7th grade in the content area of Social Studies and 8th graders in the content area of Science. CMAS assessments will be in April, after Spring Break. As a part of our preparation for these District and State Level assessments in March, April and May, we are asking in advance that medical and personal appointments be made outside of the PARCC and CMAS assessment windows. This year’s PARCC assessment dates for North are as listed for each grade level. 6th grade PARCC assessment dates: Tuesday, March 3rd , Wednesday, March 4th and Thursday, March 5th. 7th grade PARCC assessment dates: Thursday, March 5th, Friday, March 6th and Monday, March 9th. 8th grade PARCC assessment dates: Tuesday, March 10th, Wednesday, March 11th, and Thursday, March 12th . We will continue to work hard as your partners in ensuring that each student receives the highest quality education while at North MS. We focus daily on how our students can be supported and reinforced within our guidelines of Participation Respect Integrity Determination and Excellence in all we do throughout their school days. Finally, Spring on the Front Range is always a challenge, and so far this year there has been a lot of cold and snow. Please continue to ensure that your child(ren) come to school with the correct warm weather gear for the day – mornings before school, during lunch time and for their time after school. Also, as you know, it is not uncommon for our staff to provide students with time outside for outdoor learning experiences during the school day. Current District policy requires schools to keep students indoors when the temperature outside reaches below 16 degrees Fahrenheit. First it was the CSAP (Colorado State Assessment Program), and then it became the TCAP (Transitional Colorado Assessment Program). Did you ever wonder why, or what was “transitioning”? Along with most of the rest of America, Colorado has been putting standards for education in place. Standards are the expectations for what students need to learn and be able to do, broken down, or vertically aligned, into specific goals for the end of each school year. Teachers design their curriculum and lessons plans to meet the learning expectations outlined in the standards. New, updated standards reflect the critical-thinking, problem solving and effective communication skills that students need in order to be truly prepared for success after high school in today’s world. Good instruction based on standards and assessments of student learning cannot occur when these factors are considered in isolation from one another. Used together, they provide a framework for a measurable guide to student learning and achievement. The past couple of years our Transitional program has bridged the gap between the old Colorado State Assessment Program by working to prepare students for these next-generation level assessments. These have been developed as the state has changed approaches in order to align with the new Colorado Academic Standards. The new standards are more rigorous and focused, so our assessments have had to change to be able to monitor students properly. Colorado is among a group of leading states that are in the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC). As a member state, our educators have helped to develop next-generation, computer-based assessments in the areas of Math and English Language Arts. Our Social Studies and Science assessments will be through the Colorado Measure of Academic Success program (CMAS). Practice! Practice! Practice! The more familiar students are with the navigation and tools of the PARCC testing system (Pearson TestNav8), the less anxiety they will feel about the new online tests. This is especially true this year as the state moves to computer-only testing (hurrah! No more test booklets). You can access the practice tests at home by going to http://parcc.pearson.com/practice-tests/, simply select your grade level and assessment, click and begin. North MS has a high percentage of families that provide transportation for their students. This results in a lot of traffic before and just after school. PLEASE talk to your student about using the crosswalks and NOT jaywalking between cars. Especially as the ice and sand make their appearance for winter, a simple slip can all too easily turn into serious injury. We appreciate both your extra attention to our kids’ safety and your daily respect for all traffic laws. We thank you for keeping crosswalks, driveways and the bus lanes (El Paso on the east side of the building) free from traffic. Please be extra cautious when picking up and dropping off students at the cafeteria and annex entrances! High traffic and limited space make thisb area particularly troublesome! WHEN YOUR CHILD IS SICK OR ABSENT Please keep sick children home. They can’t learn well when they don’t feel well, and it puts all our other students and staff at risk. Students should not return to school until they are 24 hours clear of any fever, vomiting or diarrhea. Parents/guardians will be called to pick up students who develop symptoms during the day. Students with fevers of over 100° are not allowed on the school busses. ALL medication, including over-the-counter items, must have a medical form, signed by a practicing physician, on file. All medication, including over-the-counter items, must be kept in the Main Office. Call 328-2435 within 48 hours to excuse students. Absences of more than 3 days require a doctor’s note in order to be excused. Homework requests are only taken for absences of MORE than two days and need to be in the Attendance Office by 9:00am.All students get one day per each day they are out to make-up work. Absences (such as trips) of more than 4 days require paperwork. Check with the Attendance Office. The teachers need several days notice to create alternate assignment packets and to plan around tests and activities when you want to take work with you. THANK YOU! In IB World Schools, we value service with others—including service learning—as an important way to engage and take responsibility for the world we live in. For the 2014-2015 school year we are asking each student to complete one project over the school year. Service Learning Packets are posted on the North web site. HISTORY DAY AND SCIENCE FAIR AT NORTH MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE FAIR The Science Project is an important tool for teaching science and logic. By preparing a Science Project students learn how to develop and test hypotheses, how to observe, select, collect, measure and evaluate data. They learn research skills and how to communicate their own work in clear and appropriate ways. North Science Fair: January 29, 2015 at North MS ALL students will prepare a project for their Science classes. TIMELINE for completion is set by the classroom teacher. On January 29, 2015 all students will present their projects. North brings in community members to judge during the day so students get a variety of feedback. If you are interested in being one of our judges, please contact your student’s Science teacher. There will be an awards presentation that evening in the school cafeteria Regional Science Fair: February 21, 2015 at the UCCS campus Students may choose to participate in the Regional Science Fair. Science teachers have the information regarding costs and documentation needed for each experiment. The North Science Fair allows teachers and students to work together to sharpen and refine presentations for the larger contest. HISTORY DAY The History Project teaches a different approach to research and documentation. There is a strong emphasis on identifying and crediting source materials, exploring a wide variety of research avenues and learning to clearly present the focus and interpretation of historical people, places, things and events. History Day projects are due between February 26th and March 17th. Classes began working on parts of this project before the Winter Break. The initial judging round will be in the classroom. Winners of the classroom level evaluations will move on to an evening presentation and awards event. Regional History Day: April 4 & 5, 2015 at the Colorado College campus As with the Regional Science Fair, participation in the Regional History Day is voluntary. Teachers will work with interested students to help prepare them for the competition. Timelines and registration processes are different for the two regional competitions.
