GREEN IS THE WORD
By Berlinda Trujillo
H
ard to believe but March
is here and Spring will
arrive this month along with the
much coveted warm weather. This
a great time of year when increasing daylight and
warmth from the sun embraces the earth and makes
everything GREEN. We also celebrate St. Patrick’s
Day in March. A special day that is all about the color
GREEN.
Speaking of GREEN, I was not sure if you all
knew that North Domingo Baca is a GREEN Building.
I would like to dedicate this month’s article to
explaining how North Domingo is able to meet the
criteria of being a GREEN building.
A GREEN building is one that is good for
“people, plant and profit”. According to the U.S.
Green Building Council (USGBC) there are many
different definitions of a green building out there. The
USGBC states that “ it is generally accepted as the
planning, design, construction, and operations of
buildings with several central, foremost
considerations: energy use, water use, indoor
environmental quality, material section and the
building's effects on its site. The USGBC states these
elements make up the basic parameters for the
different credit categories within the LEED
(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)
Green Building Rating System. Much thought is
needed to making a building such as we have here at
North Domingo Baca. I am certainly not an expert in
this field, but what has been explained to me is that
there is a rating system in place in addition to
requirements to meet, in order to be called a Green
Building set by the LEED. One of the
requirements is the use of sustainable materials.
Such usage of materials is good for the environment
and is demonstrated here at North Domingo Baca
with our flooring. We have polished concrete and
bamboo floors throughout the building. Our many
high efficiency windows reduce energy
consumptions which reduces energy bills along with
our plants throughout the building that aid in
improving indoor air quality by removing toxic
chemicals, suppressing airborne microbes and
reducing dust.
Having a LEED qualified facility is a mark of
distinction, signifying that the building was
constructed or is being operated to be healthy, highperforming and resource efficient. Just thought you
might be interested to know that North Domingo
Baca actually earned the LEED Gold standard.

The 2015 year is starting to get into swing
quickly and spring is just around the corner!
Although February is one of the shortest months of
the year, the After School Program enjoyed many
special occurrences and activities. Everything
from: the school closure on February 16th, to
enjoying a Valentines party. The children made
Valentine cards for family, friends and loved ones.
The After School Program would like to
recognize as well as send a very special thank you
to Commissioner Lonnie C. Talbert for supporting
the funding for a Mini-Explora outreach that came
out to our center specifically for the children in
early February. They were able to learn and also
enjoy something new by playing with wind
tunnels, circuit boards, pattern blocks and mirrors,
wind powered cars and also balancing
investigations. This was a great experience for
both the staff and kids. Again, the City of
Albuquerque and the North Domingo Baca Youth
Staff/Program are extremely grateful be able to
utilize great and wonderful experience.
Spring time is just around the corner. Now with
daylight savings time in full swing, we can look
forward to longer and warmer days! Other
happenings to look forward to this month will be St.
Patrick’s Day (don’t forget to wear green!) and APS
Spring Break March 30th to April 3rd.
“It is spring again. The earth is like a child that
knows poems by heart.”

CASA Nutrition Tip
SHOP SMART TO FILL YOUR CART
Tips for every aisle
Use the tips below to fill your cart with budgetfriendly and healthy options. We will cover Fruit &
Grains this month and Protein Dairy next month.
Fruit Group
Find fruits and vegetables in the produce section,
frozen foods and in the canned and pantry food
aisles. Compare prices to find the best buys.
Buy “in season” produce. They are usually less
expensive and are at their peak flavor. Buy only
what you can use before it spoils. For more info
check out “What’s in Season this Season?” from
SNAP-Ed Connection.
Try buying canned. Choose fruit canned in 100%
fruit juice and vegetables with “low-sodium” or “no
salt added” on the label. These products are just as
nutritious as fresh, and often cost less.
If you have the freezer space, buy frozen vegetables
without added sauces or butter. They are as good
for you as fresh and may cost less.
Canned and frozen fruits and vegetables last much
longer than fresh and it’s a quick way to add fruits
and vegetables to your meal.
Grains Group
Find grains in many areas of the store, including
the bread, cereal, snack, and pasta and rice aisles.
Make half your grains whole grains. Throughout
the store, check ingredient lists and pick the items
that have a whole grain listed first.
Whole grains include whole wheat, brown rice,
bulgur, buckwheat, oatmeal, whole-grain cornmeal,
whole oats, and whole rye.
Rice and pasta are budget-friendly grain options.
Choose hot cereals like plain oatmeal or whole grain
dry cereal.

Mind Your Manners
We came across a small book written at the age of
14 by George Washington, the father of our country.
Contemporary to his time, social etiquette was
highly regarded and common practice, something
George exhibited throughout his life.
Decent Behavior in Company and Conversation
By George Washington
George Washington wrote down 110 rules he
called Rules of Civility & Decent Behavior, intended
to polish manners. As I read through the book, I
thought it was a refreshing reminder of the basic
principles of “Decent Behavior.”
5. If You Cough, Sneeze, Sigh, or Yawn, do it
not Loud but Privately; and Speak not in your
Yawning, but put Your handkerchief or Hand before
your face and turn aside.
6. Sleep not when others Speak, Sit not when
others stand, Speak not when you Should hold your
Peace, walk not on when others Stop.
7. Put not off your Cloths in the presence of
Others, nor go out your Chamber half Dressed.
8. At Play and at Fire its Good manners to
Give Place to the last Commer, and affect not to
Speak Louder than Ordinary.
Throughout the next issues of the “Keeping Up
With North Domingo Baca”, We will list more of
these principles.
RSVP is part of Senior Corps and is administered
by the Corporation for National and Community
Service (CNCS). The purpose of RSVP is to recruit senior volunteers into public, government
and non-profit organizations to meet community
needs. For this and other volunteer opportunities
