SPRING CLEANING
By Berlinda Trujillo
J
ust in time for spring, the
staff here at North
Domingo Baca is coming out of
a week of cleaning. A lot of
work, but once the job is done,
truly a sigh of relief. The time for shaking off the
cold, spring has arrived. The warm temperatures
motivate us to open the windows and let the
fresh air in. We go through the yearly ritual of
storing away winter items, including our favorite
bulky sweaters, winter boots, blankets and warm
comforters, and bringing out our warm weather
attire.
Just as important as renewing our house is
self-renewal. Springtime is a perfect time for
renewing our mind and body. Here at North
Domingo Baca, we have a variety of
opportunities to help you do just that. We offer
classes in Meditation, Yoga, and Tai Chi. We are
also going to offer presentations regarding
nutrition, including detoxifying and healthy
eating, which will help both physically and
mentally. A healthy immune system begins in
your gut. What you eat, how much water you
drink, and a regular physical exercise routine is
so important to your overall health. Maintaining
digestive health and a strong immune system is
key to keeping a vibrant, strong and healthy
body. I try to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables
for fiber, I drink plenty of water to cleanse my
body, and I sweat out toxins (including unwanted
feelings and thoughts!) with exercise.
A lifestyle of healthy eating habits, plenty of
Vol 1 Issue 3
water, and regular exercise helps us have better
digestion, and gives us more energy, getting us
ready for those beautiful spring— and
summer— days ahead!
When spring is upon us, we think of
refreshing and renewing our homes and yards,
but I would like
to suggest that
this spirit of
newness and life
be directed to
our mind and
bodies as well.

CLAY CLASSES
The clay classes are hopping under
the coordination of L Art Designs
LLC. Lead Instructor, ~ jo lynne,
has been at NDB for over 2 years.
When asked why she works at the
city centers instead of UNM or another facility, she responds, “The
people, students and environment are superb! It feels
like home.”
~ jo lynne started her clay experience at a very early age
with mud pies. Over the years she has trained under
many master professors and has attained degrees in Fine
Art with an emphasis in Ceramics and Fibers, Psychology
and Theater. She has trained in almost every clay technique and finish that is used and has discovered a few on
her own. One such technique discovery won her the Susan Piotrowski Award.
NYS Arts Council, New York and Wisconsin public
schools is where she designed and facilitated the art and
leadership Gifted and Talented Programs.
A friend told her once, “When a person dies, it is like a
library burns down.” ~ jo lynne’s library is full and over
flowing. She looks forward to sharing pages from the
books with you.
She also teaches at Barelas City Center. Her canvas and
fabric art are currently on display at Artist Gallery Studio
606, Broadway Blvd SE, Albuquerque. The Nightingale
Gallery in Taos is also displaying some of her sculpture
work.
Be sure to keep an eye on the display case, on the 1 st floor,
to see what we do. March’s theme was “The Animal Have
Hatched!”

Five Ways to Control the Aging Process
By Maddy Dychtwald
Control. You may think you don’t have much, but all of us have
more control than we think in terms of our own aging process.
But I’ve been surprised to learn that our lifestyle and behaviors
are now believed to be far more important to how we age than
our genes. According to Dr. John W. Rowe, professor at the
Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and
director of the MacArthur Foundation’s Research Network on
an Aging Society, “Only about 30% of the characteristics of
aging are genetically based; the rest—70%—is not.”
This new 70/30 rule is a game changer of the highest order. It
means we’re more in charge of our own aging and health than
we ever imagined. Not completely, of course. There are definitely things that are out of our control and more likely to occur as we get older.
Here are a few suggestions:
Stay physically active. We’ve heard this a million times,
however, the message is even more potent for older adults.
People who begin exercising in their 60s or 70s are three times
more likely than those who don’t exercise to age healthfully
and not develop a major chronic disease, depression, or physical or cognitive impairment.
Eat real food. A nutritious diet can improve heart health;
fortify bones; and reduce the risk of stroke, Type 2 diabetes,
and cancer. And maintaining a healthy weight is part of the
package. A rule of thumb is to eat whole rather than processed
foods.
Stay socially connected. Ultimately it’s the people we love
and who love us that matter most. Engaging regularly with
family and friends has been proven to add years to each of our
lives and make those years feel more fulfilling. In addition,
taking part in activities that connect us with younger generations and give us a sense of purpose are potent for staving off
the aging process.
Develop positive resiliency. Learning how to bounce back
from loss, disappointment, and setbacks is a practical skill we
can all endeavor to develop. Seeing the glass half full rather
than half empty is something that might sound simplistic but
can improve our lives and our health.
Train your brain. The brain is also a muscle that needs a
regular workout. Taking classes, trying new things, and exposing ourselves to new ideas all contribute to mental fitness. And
there are many online brain workout programs that are fun
and stimulating, available at no or low cost.
So remember: you can’t control everything about your aging
process, but you probably have more control that you thought.

Suggestion Box
The Suggestions Box located at the doorway
to the serving line to the kitchen. We want
your feedback. Let us know how we can improve our service to our North Domingo Baca
Community.
Suggestion: Help those of us who want to participate by
giving current class descriptions contact info and ways to
sign up! Online & at front desk, newsletter. Most people I
talk to are not aware of the classes & activities offered at
NDB. If participation is low it’s because of lack of information online & in the NDB Newsletter. I’ve tried for
months to get involved here but classes are not updated or
included in weebly descriptions. Front desk rarely has any
info.
We are making every effort to make the information readily available for interested parties.
The NDB Newsletter is going to be the main
avenue to receive North Domingo Baca information. We do download the Newsletter onto
our website:
Northdomingo.weebly.com
This will provide the opportunity to receive the
info at the front desk or the website. The flyers we post on the Announcement Boards will
have the logistics you are requesting.
Suggestion: Put up wall in Social Hall during ZUMBA.
In order to provide a space for our patrons to
eat their breakfast, we are now serving from
8:00am to 9:00am; we have divided the social
hall with the partition. As soon as our patrons
are done with breakfast we will be lifting the
divider. From what the ZUMBA instructors are
telling me, this works well since the warm-up
for class does not require as much room as
when you all get going.
Kudos to the Chefs: Helen and Marlene cook
the best meals. Thank you so much—Tomas

Mind Your Manners
We came across a small book written at
the age of 14 by George Washington, the
father of our country. Contemporary to his
time, social etiquette was highly regarded
and common practice, something George
exhibited throughout his life.
George Washington wrote down 110 rules
he called Rules of Civility &
Decent Behavior, intended to
polish manners. As I read
through the book, I thought
it was a refreshing reminder
of the basic principles of
“Decent Behavior.”
Decent Behavior in
Company and
Conversation
By George Washington
9. Spit not in the Fire, nor Stoop low before it neither
