PTA Update
The PTA fundraising committee extends our thanks to everyone who supported the 1st annual
Social Hour last Tuesday. We consider the event a big success, and we exceeded our
fundraising goal! Now we are excited to use these funds to continue supporting Northeast
Middle School.
Next PTA Meeting: Tuesday, May 5th, at 6:30 p.m.
Please join us! We meet in the Media Center, and all interested NEMS family members,
community members, and friends of NEMS are welcome to attend. If you can't make the
meeting but would like to follow along with what was discussed, you can check out the meeting
minutes on our blog.
The PTA is planning two fun events for May:
There will be a school dance with a masquerade theme on Friday, May 8th,
from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the school lunch room. The dance will be co-hosted by the
student council and the PTA, and there will be no charge -- refreshments will be
available for small fee. We are seeking volunteers to assist with decorating,
concessions, and chaperoning for this event. If you would like to volunteer, please
email [email protected].
On Friday, May 29th, we will be showing a movie at dusk (around 9:00 p.m.)
in the parking lot on 29th and Johnson. This event will be co-hosted by Johnstock
and the PTA, and there will be no charge -- refreshments will be available for a
small fee. (Rain location: NE Middle Auditorium.)
Reminder! When you order food from Parkway Pizza (2851 Johnson St. NE) on the first Monday
of each month, a portion of their proceeds are donated to the Northeast Middle School PTA. The
next opportunity for this will be Monday, May 4th.

No ALC/Beacons Programs after May 7th
Please note that there will be no ALC/Beacons programming after Thursday, May 7th. For
the last four weeks of school (May 11th through June 5th), families should plan for students to
walk, ride the bus, or be picked up immediately after school at 4:00 p.m.
Summer Opportunities
Sixth and Seventh grade students interested in attending summer school are currently
receiving permission slips from their Advisory teachers. Signed forms need to be returned to
the main office. Summer school will be held at Marcy Open.
Fast Track Scholars is a summer program for 8th graders invited to summer school and all 8th
grade AVID students. In this program, students will have the opportunity to connect with future
high school classmates, counselors, and teachers. Additionally, they have the opportunity to
earn up to four quarter high school credits in various courses including algebra, literacy,
science, engineering, geography, physical education, health, English second language, website
design, work readiness, robotics, ceramics, drawing, guitar, and theater. The program will be
held at South High School June 15, 2015, through July 23, 2015 -- Mondays through Thursdays
from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. NEMS 8th graders received information regarding Fast Track
Scholars
last
week;

Also, counselor Debbie Nelson recently emailed 8th grade students regarding several summer
job opportunities. Here is a copy of the email so that parents can discuss these opportunities
with their children. If you have any questions, please email [email protected] or
call 612-668-1505.
And here is information about baskeball, football, and baseball camps at Waite Park Rec Center.

NEMS Vision Statement:
Northeast Middle School is a school that provides all students with a supportive and nurturing
environment where quality teaching and learning is evident in everything we do.
NEMS Mission Statement:
In an environment of caring and supportive guidance, students in sixth through eighth grades
will be encouraged to develop academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. We believe
that self-respect and personal responsibility are as important to success as academic
achievement. Cultural and learning diversities will be respected, enriched, and enhanced in
order that students learn to value difference in the school population and the society in which
we live.
