Justin Duerr - Vocals and Percussion Marc Duerr - Drumset Kevin Riley - Bass Formed in the year 2000 as an outgrowth of the then current West Philadelphia (literally) underground basement band scene, Northern Liberties is a three piece band consisting of drums, percussion, bass, and voices. The year 2015 will see the existence of Northern Liberties sixth record, Errant Ray. The record is self-funded and self-released, comprised of the songs which slowly found their way to the surface in the interim since their previous record, 2011’s Glowing Brain Garden. Northern Liberties intends to continue steadfastly in the deep groove which they’ve forged – with fifteen years in this iteration, and with the members playing music in various ensembles together since 1991, the accidental formula they’ve concocted is a long-term one. Which each passing year, and each passing hour, the music becomes more important to the members of the band, if not to the world at large. The band functions as of 2015 as a small society formed for the cultivation of longstanding friendship, odd special interest music, and the trance of ecstatic rhythm/dance. The altered states discovered in the musical wilderness serve as a collective experience which bonds the group through time, providing the longevity required to realize the grand plan and vision. Errant Ray will be released on Friday, May 29th., 2015 at Johnny Brenda’s in Philadelphia. The record will be pressed in a very small edition, and no accompanying tours or shows are planned. There may be a live performance on WFMU in New Jersey as promotion, but a date isn’t set as of this writing. The rock and roll playbook will be, for the most part, ignored, but the music will hopefully reach those it wishes to reach. We hope you can join us in the actualization of this theory. Northern Liberties have been called "the sound of hope and inspiration… made me feel something I wasn’t ever planning to feel again" (Still Single), "As strong, as menacing, and as idiosyncratic as ever" (Wonkavision), "For fans of underground social change music" (Hussieskunk.com), "Definitely heavy, thoroughly metal" (Punk Planet), "Raw, artistic expression in the vein of No Means No or Shellac" (Lowcut zine), "One of the more intriguing bands I've heard in a while" (Aidabet.com) "Somewhere between the dissonant riff-heavy freakouts of Lightning Bolt, sullen Cure/Joy Division gloom, melodic hardcore marches, and spacey, psychedelic angular avant-punk that touches on USAISAMONSTER, folk, and cosmic effects tripouts, bound together with bizarre feverdream lyrics and really cool zoned out vocals" (Crucialblast.net), "A bit Joy Division, with part Fugazi and an added touch of heaviness" (Slug And Lettuce), and "Something obtuse and beautiful" by the Philadelphia City Paper. The original ‘ghost punk’ band, Northern Liberties music can be seen as a wraith like spectral branch of the 'rock' and 'punk' subcategories of music. While having no clear 'game plan' other than to participate in the phenomenon of music,1 Northern Liberties have successfully completed several short tours of the east coast of the USA, one cross-country tour, as well as recording six full length albums as well as a handful of seven inch records, tapes, and compilation appearances. Northern Liberties have shared shows with Mike Watt & The Secondmen, The Slits, Screaming Females, Lungfish, RUIN, The Notekillers, Dead Milkmen (at their first “comeback” show in Philly), Dysrhythmia, Stinking Lizaveta, Electric Wizard, Bunnydrums, Shellshag, and countless other bands in their fifteen year sojourn on the planet Earth.
