Arkansas - North High School

In 1803 The U.S. Purchased the
Louisiana territory. When the Louisiana
territory was split in half during 1806
The Arkansaw District was born. In 1812
congress decided to create Missouri
territory which then made arkansas
apart of the Missouri territory. This
was also were the first post office in
Arkansas was seen, it was located in
davidsonville Arkansas.

In the same year,
not too long after
the establishment of
this post office,
Cherokee Indians
were given the land in
Northern Arkansas.
Also a city by the
name of Fort Smith
was created.

At the time a lot of the land in
Arkansas was occupied by Quapaw
Indians and 1818 they gave their
land between the red and
Arkansas Rivers up.
The next year in 1819 Arkansas
became its own territory and
two years later the capital moved
from Arkansas post to Little
Rock, the capital we know today.
In 1824 Quapaw Indians were
forced to give up the rest of
their that was south of the
Arkansas River.
Unfortunately for the
people in Arkansas
Especially the Quapaw
Indians, the Smallpox which
was a huge epidemic at the
time spread to that
Territory in 1826. The
Smallpox were brought to
North America by european
settlers and had huge
effects on the Indians
living in which ever
territory that they
brought it to. The Smallpox
disease brought many
deaths but also many new
public health initiatives.

Arkansas became a state
Wednesday June 15, 1836 making it the
25th state in to join the union.
Arkansas Succeeded from the union
May 6 1861. Becoming the 9th state to
succeeded from the union. There were
10 other states that succeeded from
the union. During the Civil War
Arkansas helped the confederacy by
providing troops, political leaders and
even supplies.
In 1862 Both The
Battles Of Pea
Ridge And Prairie
Grove was fought.
In both of the
battles the Union
was victorious.
In 1968 Arkansas was
re-admitted to the
union then a couple
year later the Hot
Springs Reservation
was created. In 1887
Bauxite was discovered
in southwest Arkansas.
In 1891 the first
Jim Crow Law was
passed separating
blacks from whites
on on trains and
trams.
In the early 1900s
Arkansas was
discovering so many
things.
For Example in 1906
Diamonds were
discovered Around
Murfreeboro and in
1920 Oil was
discovered Around
Smackover
In 1957 Desegregation in
schools brought a lot of
attention to the Civil
Rights Movement. 9 black
High Schools Students
Volunteered to Integrate
a Little Rock High School.
They are known as the
Little Rock 9. After They
Volunteered the High
Schools decided to close for
one whole academic year.
Those are the
events that
shaped the
Arkansas that
exists Today.
