The ultimate success of Kevin’s Fund lies in the recipients of Kevin’s scholarships. This year we are pleased to spotlight Eloise Libre, recipient of the 2010 Norwalk High School Kevin M. Eidt Memorial Scholarship Fund 7 Bumblebee Lane ~ Norwalk, CT ~ 06851 www.KevinsFund.org scholarship and 2014 cum laude graduate of Tufts University. Eloise flew in from San Francisco to share her feelings with us. Eloise Libre’s Comments: Kevin M. Eidt Memorial Scholarship Fund 7 Bumblebee Lane ~ Norwalk, CT ~ 06851 www.KevinsFund.org I am honored to be here. All of you are extremely special to me. While I never had the privilege of meeting Kevin, I know that he left a meaningful impression on everyone he met; his commitment to organizations and to other people was great, and has inspired much of what I have become. Tonight I’d like to talk about how your support and Kevin’s inspiration perpetuates beyond the winners of this scholarship. I feel incredibly lucky to have received the education that I did. My four years at Tufts University pushed me to new academic heights and fueled my ambition. I am proud to have graduated cum laude in History, with highest thesis honors, and a minor in Music. My semester studying abroad in Switzerland challenged me linguistically, with all coursework in French. During my senior year, I worked harder than ever, writing a thesis on the history of bilingual education policy in Massachusetts. My analysis of case studies, legislation, and countless interviews with community members ignited my passion for education, policy, and social justice. When I stood before you five years ago to accept this prestigious award, I never could have guessed what I would be doing after college. Because of this scholarship, I was lucky enough to graduate debt-free, and I cannot emphasize enough how grateful I am for this. Graduating debt-free allowed me to accept an AmeriCorps internship in San Francisco. I am spending the year working for an environmental education program through the city’s Department of Recreation and Parks. Our program, called the Youth Stewardship Program, provides students all over San Francisco with a series of free field trips to parks within walking distance of their school. I teach hands-on lessons for 2nd12th grade about topics such as ecosystems, plant and animal adaptations, urban gardening, and habitat restoration. For kids who rarely get a chance to explore outside, this is huge. For me, playing in the dirt with kids every day is the best job in the world! My motivation to work in environmental education developed over time. As a kid, I was lucky enough to go on exciting hikes and ski trips with my family. Feeling the rush of alpine air from the summit of a mountain served as an important form of learning for me. My decade-long dedication to Camp Hazen YMCA extended my love for outdoor adventure and passed it on to kids at summer camp. Before matriculating at Tufts in 2010, I jumped at an opportunity to get involved that would change my life – and accelerate my path towards environmental education. The freshman pre-orientation Kevin M. Eidt Memorial Scholarship Fund 7 Bumblebee Lane ~ Norwalk, CT ~ 06851 www.KevinsFund.org program I went on the week before school started was a 5-day canoe trip. That trip provided a community for me in college, developed my thirst for adventure, and introduced me to nine new best friends. The Tufts Wilderness Orientation connected me to people on the Ski Team, Mountain Club, and youth service opportunities that became pivotal in my college career. The following three years, after finishing my summer job at Camp Hazen, I volunteered a few weeks at the end of August to lead trips for incoming Tufts freshmen. During my senior year and throughout the following summer, the University hired me to coordinate the entire 2014 Wilderness Orientation program. These formative experiences in outdoor programming shaped my trajectory toward environmental education. My favorite part about what I do now in San Francisco is that it’s free for participating schools. This means that urban students, often from low-income families, get to expand their education in a different way, in an exciting way, in a way that I believe is so important: outside. Recently, I was working with a group of fifth-graders, hiking around a park and making observations. After the hike, we brainstormed ways to improve the park, and then worked together on a habitat restoration project. As we were pulling invasive weeds, a girl turned to me and said, “I wish I could get outside more. It’s good for the park AND it’s good for me!” Getting kids outside makes a big impact. Research shows that children who spend time outside are healthier, happier, and more focused in school. Giving young people opportunities to give back to their parks instills a sense of service learning and promotes a more sustainable environment. Outdoor education is something I strongly believe in, and I feel incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to work with these students in what is my absolute dream job – an opportunity that would not have been possible without this scholarship and all of you. At this dinner a few years ago, Mrs. Eidt gave me a wallet-sized photo of Kevin. I’ve kept it with me in my years at school, and since. The photo reminds me that it is important to leave a personal, meaningful impact on my community. Throughout high school and college, Kevin’s legacy inspired me to live a life of charisma, kindness, and value. Now, that spirit encourages me to leave a positive impact every day on my students in San Francisco. Kevin M. Eidt Memorial Scholarship Fund 7 Bumblebee Lane ~ Norwalk, CT ~ 06851 www.KevinsFund.org To the selection committee – thank you for believing in me. Your encouragement has allowed me to follow my dreams. To the contributors to the Fund – thank you for your support that reaches well beyond the winners of these awards. The ripple effect of your generosity spreads to students, families, and communities across the country. To the Eidt family – thank you for sharing Kevin’s love. To my own family – thank you for instilling my sense of adventure, for allowing me to move to California, and for always pushing me to achieve higher goals. I would also like to thank you all on behalf of my students in San Francisco, and on behalf of the city parks where we work. For every park habitat that we restore, and for every child who discovers a green space in the neighborhood, you deserve credit. As each winner of this scholarship goes on to leave his or her mark, wherever that may be, Kevin’s legacy lives on. Thank you. Other Fundraising The Stew Leonard’s donation committee has selected Kevin’s Fund to be recipient of their Wishing Well program for the month of May. This is the 15th consecutive year Kevin’s Fund has participated in Stew Leonard’s Wishing Well. Scholarship Fund Background On the evening of January 23, 1997 Kevin M. Eidt, an 18-year-old freshman at Boston College, passed away from cardiac arrest while playing an intramural basketball game on campus. Dreams are important. And this community's dreams of what Kevin would continue to accomplish was not destined to end with a tragic story about a basketball game, but rather continue in the hearts and minds of the exceptional young men and women who are recipients of his scholarships. Recipients who carry on Kevin's legacy that you can even at this age make a difference in this world; that no matter what your God given talents if you worked hard you would succeed; and that it was never an option to do something badly when it was within your power to do it well. Kevin M. Eidt Memorial Scholarship Fund 7 Bumblebee Lane ~ Norwalk, CT ~ 06851 www.KevinsFund.org Kevin, co-valedictorian of the Norwalk High School class of 1996 was also co-captain of the men’s tennis team, and a member of the renowned marching band and the jazz ensemble. Outside of school Kevin gave to the community as a volunteer for the Norwalk Soup Kitchen, Save the Children, and the American Heart Association. As a junior in high school Kevin created the concept and co-chaired with his brother, the first Hoops for Hearts basketball tournament in Fairfield County to benefit the American Heart Association. Kevin entered Boston College in the fall of 1996. He was to complete only one semester, passing away during the first week of the spring semester. But in that short time, Kevin left his mark on BC, as he did here in Fairfield County. He was a dean’s list computer science major in the Carroll School of Management Honors Program and shared his music talent as a member of the Pep Band, Jazz Ensemble, and Liturgy Arts Group. Yet in spite of the fact he was to spend such a short time at BC, it was obviously filled with accomplishments attested to by his posthumously receiving the annual Nicholas H. Woods Leadership Award. In addition, the men and women’s intramural basketball trophies at Boston College have been named after Kevin, and the Liturgy Arts Group dedicated a CD in his memory. As part of Norwalk's 350th anniversary in October 2001, Kevin was posthumously honored as one of the hundred individuals whose leadership would shape the greater Norwalk area for the next 50 years. This honor was in recognition of what Kevin accomplished in his life and what his memory and legacy continues to make possible through a caring community's support of his Scholarship Fund. Kevin has been posthumously honored by having the St. Jerome, (Norwalk, CT), Youth Room, and the Norwalk High School National Honor Society Chapter named in his honor. Boston College Eagle EMS is an all-volunteer student run, quick response emergency medical service organization formed in 1997 by a classmate of Kevin’s who wanted to make sure future situations like Kevin’s could be met with the skill and resources which could mean the difference between life and death. In 2009 Eagle EMS established the Kevin M. Eidt Excellence Award which is presented annually to the most outstanding member of the organization. Today, the organization formed in Kevin’s memory, has Kevin M. Eidt Memorial Scholarship Fund 7 Bumblebee Lane ~ Norwalk, CT ~ 06851 www.KevinsFund.org 100+ active members and has recently been awarded the Striving for Excellence Award by the National Collegiate EMS foundation, the foundation’s most prestigious honor. It was the life Kevin led, and the void his passing created, that led family and friends to create the Kevin M. Eidt Memorial Scholarship Fund. The level of contributions received in that first year far exceeded expectations and with the help of an annual benefit dinner dance, the idea of a one-time scholarship has evolved into a significant ongoing scholarship program. A program, which has allowed Kevin's spirit to continue in the exceptional young men and women who are recipients of his scholarships. The Fund’s Scholarship Commitments The Kevin M. Eidt Memorial Scholarship Fund is supporting eight scholarships in 2015 each specifically related to areas in which Kevin excelled: five for Norwalk High School, one for the St. Jerome Parish Youth Group, two for Boston College and one for Norwalk community service.
