Bulwell Health and Well-being Programme 2015/16
Keeping healthy is something we all need to think about and take personal responsibility for.
Many people assume that poor health is an inevitable part of getting older and even use this as
an excuse to lead an unhealthy lifestyle, but there are plenty of small steps you can take to
improve your health and to help you on your way to a longer, happier and more independent
life. Working in cooperation with other organisations we offer a varied programme of weekly
activities. But first the key to wellbeing and happiness:
The 5 ways to Wellbeing are:
Connect - With the people around you. With family, friends, colleagues and neighbours, join a club and get out
more. Think of these as the cornerstones of your life and invest time in developing them. Building these
connections will support and enrich you every day.
Be Active within the limitations of your health conditions. Go for a walk or run. Step outside. Cycle. Play a
game. Garden. Dance. Exercising makes you feel good. Most importantly, discover a physical activity you enjoy
and that suits your level of mobility and fitness.
Take Notice - Be curious. Catch sight of the beautiful. Remark on the unusual. Notice the changing seasons.
Savour the moment, whether you are walking to work, eating lunch or talking to friends. Be aware of the world
around you and what you are feeling. Reflecting on your experiences will help you appreciate what matters.
Keep Learning - Try something new. Rediscover an old interest. Sign up for that course. Take on a different
responsibility at work. Fix a bike. Learn to play an instrument or how to cook your favourite food. Set a challenge
you will enjoy achieving. Learning new things will make you more confident as well as being fun.
Give - Do something nice for a friend, or a stranger. Thank someone. Smile. Volunteer your time. Get involved in
the Community Garden, “We Love Bulwell” Town Team. Look out, as well as in. Seeing yourself, and your
happiness, linked to the wider community can be incredibly rewarding and creates connections with the people
around you. We encourage random acts of kindness in our community.
Health Walks Programme
Our health walks programme offers a number of short walks commencing in Bulwell and a choice of longer walks
using your travel pass. With the Tram extensions to Clifton, Wilford and Beeston from July easy access to some
beautiful walks.
The walks offer you the opportunity to improve your health, make new friends, have fun and get to know your
local area. Walks are free and everybody is welcome. We are grateful to all our walk leaders

All our walks are on Monday mornings commencing at approx 10.00 from the 17 bus stop at the end of
Cantrell Road. A monthly programme leaflet will be produced and distributed to all walkers

Other Walking Groups in Bulwell -Bestwood 1-3 miles a variety of interesting walks. Meet Southglade Access
Centre every Monday at 1.15pm. Nuthall Railway walk along part of the Great Northern Railway Line, stopping
halfway for coffee at the Three Ponds. Meet at Snapewood Community Centre every Tuesday at 10.30am. Old
Bedford- 2miles. A flat walk along the River Leen to Bulwell and return. Meet at Garage on Mill Street, Basford at
10.30am. Strelley Woodland Walk- a circular walk through open fields with panoramic views of the area. Meet
first Wednesday of every month, 10.00 at Broad Oak Public House. Strelley Village.

Just opened the Mulberry Street Café located at Strelley Hall Stables just above the Broad Oak Pub on Main
Street, open from 10.00 – 4.00. Access by foot, bus (No 35 from Bulwell Bus station get off at Wigwam Lane
Bilborough) and car and provides access to numerous beautiful walks, including Oldmoor Woods and its beautiful
display of bluebells in April and early May. Finally, Don’t Sit, Get Fit?
Other activities
Henry Mellish Sports Centre- CBF Gymnasiums a local company. Our sports centre provides sustained physical
activity in the local community at a reasonable price which the residents of this area can afford. With
Membership only £21 per month or £6 a week or £3 Pay as you go and open 7am-9pm Mon-Fri and Sat/sun
8.30am-3pm, it's accessible and affordable as well as a place new friends come together and volunteers can have
responsibilities and gain experience and training along the way.
Forever young targets over 50's This runs Monday to Friday from 9am-11am and costs just £1. Thursdays we run
over 50's badminton from 10am, £3 per session.
We will also have coming soon a luncheon club for the over 50's. Offering activities over lunch which aims to
meet and make friends. All of these activities run alongside the usual gym facilities which cater for the young and
young at heart!
Outdoor Gyms and fitness areas can be found at the following locations: *Bulwell Forest *Bulwell Hall Park
*Vernon Park * Southglade Park.
Use them they are free. Each fitness area is free to use 24/7and suitable for all ages and abilities. The equipment
has a mixture of cardiovascular (works heart and lungs) and toning stations which use your own body weight as
the resistance to your workout, meaning you can either be gentle or push yourself that little bit harder. Why not
go with a friend, you will see results in a couple of weeks.
Swimming is another great activity which can offer a wide range of health benefits and we have 2 fantastic City
Council Leisure Centres offering excellent facilities: Ken Martin Leisure Centre, Hucknall Road, tel 8761600 and
Southglade Leisure Centre, Chippenham Road tel 9151525 and Bestwood.
Bulwell Snooker Club - possibly Bulwell’s oldest sports club, set up by local people 128 years ago and still going
strong. Open from 11.00 am – 11.00 pm. Situated on the Bulwell bus Station on Vere Street Postcode: NG6

Bulwell Forest Golf Club is Nottinghamshire’s most historic Golf Course set up by local people in 1889. Recently
it has undergone changes to both the course and the very welcoming Club House. Golf is the perfect sport for
people of all ages – just like you. Excellent sees the launch of new junior membership scheme for young people

Bulwell Forest Garden is a community food growing project, managed by a team of local volunteers, producing
organically grown fruit and vegetables to local residents for a small donation. We also provide educational
workshops, environmental play sessions, and community health and wellbeing events, increasing people’s access
to healthy food and exercise, and preventing social isolation. Main focus is on local residents, but the gardens are
open to anyone. Facilities include community beds, individual plots, outdoor kitchen and community orchard.
Toilet facilities available. We are open Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, 2pm-6pm for general volunteering.
We also run a Garden Club on the first and third Wednesday of each month, 10am-1pm, and Stay and Play
sessions on Wednesdays during school holidays. Check website and Facebook for upcoming events. Bulwell

Yoga Sessions 6 week course at the Garden commencing on Monday 1st June, time to arrange with those who

Get Fit, Get Active, Get Involved – Bowls Bulwell Forest Bowls Club organise “Come and have a Go” sessions
every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday mornings between 10.00 and 12.00 at the club, commencing April
– September. 2015 At a minimal cost of £1 per session which also includes cup of tea/coffee and biscuit. Suitable

Bulwell Arts Festival is a 9 day arts festival using creativity to celebrate the people, history and landscape of
Bulwell. A varied arts programme to engage our community and share in exciting activities and opportunities for

Badminton club at Bulwell Riverside. Every Tuesday and Friday from 10.30am-12noon.
Bulwell Cycle Centre at Bulwell Riverside – Every Saturday, cycle training from 10.00am. Led ride starting from
12.00 noon. The TravelRight Cycle Centre is perfect if you want to brush up your cycle skills, enjoy a relaxing ride,
improve your health and meet new people. Every week there is a FREE fun and leisurely bike ride. Even if you’ve
never been on a bike before, TravelRight’s friendly tuition will have you cycling in no time. If you don’t have a

Walk and Talk – a weekly walking group meets every Thursday at 11am at the cafe at Bulwell Riverside and
offers an opportunity for people to walk, socialise, practise English (for those who need to) and get to know the

The Savoy Thursday mornings, Savoy offers its silver screen club a carefully selected film and a cup of tea or coffee - all
for only £3.25. The silver screen club is as much about the social gathering as it is the film. Everybody over the age of 50 is
welcome. Doors open at 11:00am with the film starting at 11.30am.
The Broadway Cinema, Lace Market on Thursdays with 2 daytime showings with senior citizens in mind. Films
