Everyone Achieves
Excellence in education to support future success
Everyone Achieves:
Welcome
The Bulwell Academy is proud of its heritage yet is firmly placed
in the 21st century. We aim to provide an education tailored
around each of our students to ensure they are ready to progress
towards their future as successful 21st century citizens.
The building has been designed to provide a nurturing
environment to stimulate young minds, through light and
open classrooms, quieter independent learning areas
and state-of-art learning and sporting facilities. Our
specialism, as a business and enterprise academy, focuses
us on our key role in growing academic achievement,
developing enterprising behaviours and strengthening
the emotional intelligence of our students.
We have two sponsors, Edge and The Thomas Telford
School. Each sponsor brings invaluable insight, vision and
drive to ensure we achieve our ambition to be an
outstanding school. As one of the country’s highest
achieving schools, The Thomas Telford School provides
support to embed their expertise in teaching and
learning to achieve excellence whilst Edge keeps our
vision firmly focused on our belief that there ‘are many
paths to success’; this is a powerful partnership that we
are proud to be part of.
This academy is for the benefit of the community of
Bulwell and its surrounding areas and we are keen
to develop new partnerships to the benefit of our
students. Please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss
your child’s educational needs and we look forward to
working with you to support the hopes and aspirations
of your child.

Our approach to learning
The academy operates an innovative curriculum in years 7 and 8
to establish firm foundations in English, maths and science.
As our students progress through the academy, they will
be given many opportunities to develop their skills for
enterprise and personal educational pathway to success.
The curriculum includes subjects vital for the 21st
century learner including modern foreign languages,
construction, design and technology, expressive arts,
humanities, ICT and sport.
Business Communities:
Being part of a learning family
The academy has five business communities named after
exceptional local people; Boot, Bonington, Byron,
Booth and Bowden.
Each business community is led by an experienced
vice principal. Each community averages 230
students so they are small enough to create a
supportive environment but large enough to
enable students to learn from each other.
Our students receive support within their business
community to enable them to thrive academically and
to mature into responsible and happy citizens.
Students are given the opportunity to develop their
leadership skills through assigned responsibilities and to
celebrate their success within their community groups
on a regular basis. For many of our students this sense
of belonging to a learning family drives their enthusiasm
to face challenges and achieve success.

Business & enterprise:
our specialism
The academy’s specialism in business and enterprise enables
tremendous scope for students to experience the world of
work for themselves.
Furthermore, all students are actively encouraged to
understand how their learning can be used in the world of
business, enterprise and the community through strong
business partnerships. These partnerships bring businesses
directly in to the classroom to support learning.
Students are given the chance to undertake a full
employability programme designed to develop their
understanding of the world of work and find out what
excites them.
Not only do students complete work placements, they
also take part in visits and tours to colleges and work
places and receive personal support to help guide them
in their career choices and further study options.
The academy works alongside a number of locally based
businesses who share their expertise and create real
employment prospects for our students.
Developing business understanding and building enterprise skills
Building values and
developing enterprise skills
The academy places tremendous emphasis on developing skills
to enable students to be successful in their careers. Enterprise
skills enable students to have a ‘can do’ attitude. This starts with
developing their Six Rs.
These values nurture reasoning, reflection, resilience,
resourcefulness, responsibility and respect within our
students and establish the foundations and core values
for our students and staff. These attributes form the
basis of our rewards system which recognises success
and rewards positive behaviour.
As students progress through the academy and
master these skills, the older students are then actively
encouraged to develop their enterprise skills – their
leadership, team working, creativity, innovation, risk
management and problem solving skills. All these are
essential skills that every employer is looking for when
employing staff to secure the success of their business.
Developing skills for future success
Sixth Form
Our sixth form curriculum is highly focused, ICT rich and
designed to ensure that our students develop the skills
necessary to succeed.
Students can choose from courses at all levels including business, hospitality, health and social care, sports and
fashion. This curriculum is continually evolving to meet the needs and career ambitions of our students and our
offer is continually being reviewed and reshaped.
We can report tremendous success with student progression to employment and higher education through
strong academic growth; we continue to build on these achievements. Our greatest pride is in the remarkable
personal development of our students nurtured through a wide variety of opportunities and support.
The graduate from our sixth form has a clear understanding of their career and higher education possibilities
together with all the skills and attributes required by 21st century employers.
Students receive ongoing mentoring and support at post 16
