Nine national finalists will win
a place on a two-week expedition,
with one crowned overall CVQO

at House of Lords ceremony on

education charity in the UK that

16 year old Grace McDonald of
209 Squadron Air Training
Corps, West Bridgford, could
be one of the nine national
finalists with a chance of winning
the two-week exhibition to
South Africa. There were 200
people originally nominated, so
even getting this far is a huge
achievement in itself.
Grace found out she had been
selected when she was coming out
of an exam.
She said: “I saw my name
mentioned in an online post and
couldn’t believe it at first, but here
I am! A couple of days later I got a
letter in the post addressed to my
rank, which I thought was quite
amusing, but it was a great surprise
and everyone knows me in the wing
(cadet unit) now.

Mountains of Mail
Two Nottinghamshire residents have
been sent a mountain of mail in the
post equivalent to their own body
weight in the past two years.
These extreme examples show the
pressures that residents across the
county are facing from organisations
bombarding them with junk post
– with the victims sometimes
receiving between 18 and 20 letters
a day. Legitimate mail is often lost
among the junk, leading to missed
appointments.
Nottinghamshire County Council’s
Trading Standards team has revealed
the shocking statistic that 70kg of
junk mail has been removed from
two homes in the county.

Deputy Chief Constable Sue Fish
said: “We would not want people to
see these figures and worry that there
has been a steep rise in rapes and sexual
assaults in Nottinghamshire today.
The rise is in no small part down to

ago and now, because of the increased
confidence of victims in a police
investigation, people are having the
confidence to report those crimes to us.
This is a welcome development and
shows people have faith they will

She took the opportunity

Lydia Davies-Bright said:

designed by young carers from
Nottingham. intu worked in partnership
with Action for Young Carers
Nottingham (AYCN), and arts
charity CREATE last year to create

The centre will be celebrating the
hard work of the young people

during the practical sessions and
helped with painting the designs
last year.
During the behind the scenes

#DeDay
Wednesday 15th April is
#DeDay, marking the final
push to get young people
aged 16-24 registered to vote
by 20th April ahead of the
General and Local Elections on
7th May.
In Nottingham, Bite the Ballot
has teamed up with GameCity
to run a unique voter registration
drive.
Potential voters are invited to
come and enjoy a ‘Voter Advice
Studio’ in the lobby space of
the new National Video Game
Arcade in Hockley from 11am to
3pm on Wednesday 15th April.
The National Ice Centre and its
many skaters have been selected
for a major new TV series for
CBBC.
The ten part documentary series
named Ice Stars follows the action
packed life, on and off the ice, of a
group of determined young skaters
living in and around Nottingham.
Made by production company
Drummer TV (School for Stars
and My Life: Born Lucky and
Peter’s Circus), Ice Stars will
capture the highs and lows for
the young skaters as they juggle
home, school and friendships
with a life on the Ice, striving to
be the best in a sport they love.
The series will look to explore the
world of skating from first timers
to future Olympians and discover
that whether it’s Ice Hockey or
Synchro, Figure or Speed Skating,
Dance or Jumps, it is a competitive
world that requires dedication and
sacrifices not just for the skaters
themselves but often for the
whole family.
The series has been
commissioned by Cheryl

of CBBC and the
Executive Producer
is Kez Margrie
who says:
“The
passion and commitment of these
young people is remarkable. Going
behind the scenes at the ice rink
opens up a whole new world of
hard training with highs and lows,
which pushes their dedication
to the limit and forges strong
friendships.”
The series is being filmed on
location at the National Ice
Centre in Nottingham until
May. Ice Stars is being made
for CBBC by Drummer TV, the
Executive Producer for CBBC is
Kez Margrie and the Executive

Where there’s a Will,
there’s a way!
If you die without a will, there are
certain rules which dictate how the
money, property or possessions
should be allocated. This may not
be the way that you would have
wished your money and possessions
to be distributed.
Unmarried partners and partners
who have not registered a civil
partnership cannot inherit from
each other unless there is a will, so
the death of one partner may create
serious financial problems for the
remaining partner.
If you have children, you will
need to make a will so that
arrangements for the children
can be made if either one or both
parents die.
It may be possible to reduce the
amount of tax payable on the
inheritance if advice is taken in
advance and a will is made.
If your circumstances have changed,
it is important that you make a
will to ensure that your money
and possessions are distributed
Why is it
important
to make
a will?
according to your wishes.
If you are in any doubt as to
whether or not you should make a
will, you should consult a solicitor
or a Citizens Advice Bureau who
can give you lists of solicitors.
Who are executors?
Executors are the people who will
be responsible for carrying out
your wishes and for sorting out the
estate. They will have to collect
together all the assets of the estate,
deal with all the paperwork and
pay all the debts, taxes, funeral and
administration costs out of money in
the estate. They will need to pay out
the gifts and transfer any property to
beneficiaries.
Who to choose as executors…
It is not necessary to appoint more
than one executor although it is
advisable to do so, for example, in
case one of them dies. It is common
to appoint two, but up to four
executors can take on responsibility
for administering the will after a
death.
Getting a copy of the will
when probate has been
granted
When someone dies,
the person who is dealing
with their estate (for example,
money and property) must
usually get authorisation
to do so from the Probate
Service. If there is a will, this
authorisation is called a grant
of probate.
When probate is granted,
the will is kept by the
Probate Service and any
member of the public can
get a copy.
What is probate?
Probate is a legal
document. Receipt of
probate is the first step in
the legal process of
administering the estate of a
deceased person, resolving
all claims and distributing the
deceased person’s property
under a will.
“There is no point in leaving a will?!”
Wills, or lack of one, have formed
the basis of many fascinating
stories. From the cobbles of
Coronation Street to the Jones’
two doors down, wills have made
and shattered lives, torn apart
families and created billionaires.
We all have a keen interest in
other peoples’ affairs, especially
when things go wrong, but when
it comes to our own affairs we
seem to take a much more relaxed
approach.
The impact of not leaving a will
can have devastating effects on
those you leave behind, but still,
almost two-thirds of people in the
UK do not have a valid will.
So why don’t more people
make a will?
For some people it’s because
they do not like thinking about
their own mortality; others think
their nearest and dearest will
automatically inherit their estate
without the need for a will.
If you die without a valid will
your estate will be distributed
according to the
governments’
intestate rules:
meaning some
or all of your
estate may go
to people whom
you never
intended to
benefit.
Many people
say “there is no
point in leaving
a will, all I
have is debt”
but you may be
surprised! You
may be entitled
to benefits from
work; many
people have life
assurance on
their mortgage
or, if you died
suddenly due to
an accident then
your loved
ones may
be entitled to compensation.
Also personal gifts may not
be valuable in terms of money
but can often mean the world
to the loved ones whom you
leave behind.
Wills are not solely about
passing on your assets either.
You can include specific
funeral arrangements and
appoint someone as an
executor so they have the
authority to tie up your
affairs properly. Without this
authority it will make it a
struggle for your loved ones
to administer your estate,
adding an extra burden at an
already very stressful and
worrying time.
Making a Will is a practical
way to ensure that your loved
ones receive what you would
wish and enables them to
navigate the grieving process
free of any unnecessary worry
and distress.
Who wouldn’t want that
for their family?

huge success.
In total there were 37 entries
received, with nine winners chosen

their achievement.
As a special surprise, however, the
winning designs were turned into
40cm tall, three-dimensional eggs

for the annual Christmas display.
The eggs are now proudly

Improving Troubled Lives
Five simple policy changes
could revolutionise support
for people whose lives have
been blighted by multiple and
complex needs – that’s the
focus of a campaign launched by
a leading regional homelessness
charity.
Framework, based in Nottingham,
has helped tens of thousands of
homeless and vulnerable people
over the last 40 years. But it has grown increasingly
concerned about the numbers
of people living what it
calls Troubled Lives – those
experiencing combinations of
mental ill-health, substance misuse,
reoffending and homelessness.
The Simple Change for
Troubled Lives campaign
proposes five simple changes
that, taken together, would help
people leading Troubles Lives and
reduce their cost to the rest
of society.
The Five Actions are:
• Support people with multiple
and complex needs using tried
and tested solutions
• Amend the rules on
access to social and
health care to stop excluding
this group
• Invest in specialist housing for
those who need it
• Make welfare work for
people living Troubled Lives
• Join up policy where it affects
people living Troubled Lives
by thinking about the impact
on this group before decisions
are made.
Vince, 48, is somebody who
lived a Troubled Life for
around 30 years. He has now
completely changed his life and
is working full time to
help homeless people in
Nottinghamshire.
He explained why he is supporting
the campaign: “My problems
have been around homelessness,
persistent reoffending, substance
misuse and mental illness.
My offending started at a
very young age and altogether
I have served 17 or 18 prison
sentences in total which have
had a very detrimental impact on
my life.
It’s difficult to help people like
me because we’ve not just got one
problem – we’ve got a multitude of
problems so breaking that cycle is
very hard.”

the benefits of
providing a

British public can
help us provide
much needed

CELEBR
Huge Purple Flag Party Planned
A treasure hunt with
great prizes, street
performers, a stunning
light box exhibition, a
flash mob dance, a colliery
band and an evening
market are among the vast
array of attractions on offer
at Mansfield’s Purple Flag
party on Saturday, April 25th.
The town library is playing
host to a health and beauty
show featuring products
and services from high
street retailers including
Boots, Harmony Health,
Debenhams, Dorothy Perkins
and M&S. The Museum will
have two exhibitions by the
famous Jonny Wright and on
stage at The Palace Theatre
is The Addams Family
Musical.
Those involved in staging the
event say that people who
don’t know Mansfield town
centre – including ones that
live and work in the area –
have an outdated view of
what it is like and what it has
to offer.
And, they say, the party
will help show what a great
place Mansfield is for a
night out by using venues
and bringing activities
together on one night that
are available in the town
throughout the year.
The Purple Flag party is a
celebration of Mansfield
being awarded Purple
Flag status. After years of
hard work and partnership
collaboration an application
was made to the
Association of Town and City
Management (ATCM) for
Mansfield to be considered
for the award.
Two weekend visits were
made by assessors to
Mansfield and paperwork
providing evidence of
achievements in the town
was submitted. As a result
Purple Flag status was
granted to Mansfield in
November 2014.
Celebration of the
prestigious standard,
which is granted to
towns that offer
an entertaining,
varied, safe
and enjoyable
night out, is
expected to
attract lots of
attention and
provide visitors
with a bumper
package of
entertainments,
most free of
charge.
Mansfield Business
Improvement District (BID)
Manager Sarah Nelson who
led on the work says: “The
town is starting to shake off
its reputation as a place to
avoid in the evenings and
the Purple Flag party will
add to this, showing just how
much Mansfield has to offer.
“Visitor numbers are
increasing as more
people realise there
is a wide range of
activities to enjoy in
a safe and friendly
environment. The
Purple Flag status
underlines this.
“We hope to see lots of
people enjoying the party –
everyone is invited and we
encourage them to come
along and tell
their friends too!”
Work to gain the Purple
Flag award was led by a
team set up in 2013 and
involving representatives
from Mansfield Association
of Licensed Venues (MALV),
Mansfield BID, Mansfield
District Council, Mansfield
Partnership Against Crime
(MPAC) and the police.
Many other organisations
which contribute to the town
centre experience have also
played a role in the work.
Mansfield is now entitled to
fly the Purple Flag for two
years, subject to a successful
“light touch” assessment
after 12 months.

WHAT IS
PURPLE FLAG?
Purple flag is an accreditation process similar to
Green Flag Award for parks and Blue Flag for beaches.
It leads to Purple Flag status for town centres that
meet or surpass the standards of excellence
in managing the evening and night-time
economy.
Being awarded the Purple Flag means
a comprehensive set of standards,
management processes and good

indicates that the applicant town or city
has an entertaining, diverse, safe and
enjoyable night out.
The team steering the Purple Flag work

Calling All Gardeners!
With Spring finally here, green fingered
gardeners will be glad of the assistance
available at Walkers Bulbs.
From daffodils to tulips and indoor
hyacinths to alliums, here you will
certainly find a variety beautiful flowers
to put the spring back into your house
and garden.
Leading this division is Johnny
Walkers, who is a name synonymous
with Daffodils. Some might say he is
obsessed but he says it’s just because
bulbs are in his blood.
Johnny worked with his parents and
attended Horticultural College before
flying the coup to prove his own way in
Daffodils
are often
dismissed
due to the
amount we
see bursting
through in the
Spring months
but they are beautifully suited to
naturalising and planting in large,
generous drifts. There are a number of
different varieties, so don’t think that a
daffodil is just a daffodil; they are much
more than just that.
Walkers Bulbs are the mail order
subsidiary of Taylors Bulbs the UK’s
leading supplier of bulbs to the trade.
the bulb world. Johnny helped establish
a quality assurance scheme for a group
of English bulb growers and part of his
responsibility involved advising growers
from Cornwall, Norfolk and Lincolnshire
on bulb production techniques and
maintaining quality standards. The work
of this group was so successful that
by the time Johnny left the group was
exporting over 5,000 tonnes of daffodils
per annum to countries all over the world
However, circumstances now meant
that Johnny could finally indulge his
true passion – Daffodils. So he left his
full time career and started his own mail
order business selling specialist Daffodil
varieties (and other Spring bulbs) to
narcissus lovers around the country.
In 2003 Johnny was formally recognised
by the Daffodil Society who made
him an Honorary Vice-President in
recognition of his years of work in
maintaining daffodil quality standards
and also for his endless efforts in
promoting these gorgeous blooms.
Walkers Bulbs will be
exhibiting a variety of
daffodils at the Harrogate

they have already won 23
consecutive gold medals.

Boosting
Our Bus
Fleet
Nottingham will become home
to the UK’s first all-electric Park
& Ride bus service when 13 new
vehicles boost the city’s electric
bus fleet to 58.
Funding for the buses comes
from a £1.4m grant from the
Department for Transport
Green Bus Fund with an
additional £2.1m raised from
the City Council’s Workplace
Parking Levy.
The buses will use electricity
sustainably generated from local
waste incineration and PV panels
to run and also for their heating.
The City Council placed the order
with Chinese manufacturer BYD
and the buses will start operation
in 2016. These will be used on
Park & Ride services to and from
the city centre from the Queens
Drive and Racecourse Park &
Ride sites. The Linkbus service is
already the largest electric bus fleet
in Europe, saving the City Council
around £18,000 in fuel costs each
year when compared to standard
diesel buses. The vehicles produce
zero emissions, apart from their
diesel-powered heaters. The total
fleet costs £14million, with around
half being funded through the
Workplace Parking Levy, matched
with Green Bus Fund rounds and
additional contributions from the
Local Sustainable Transport Fund
and the Local Transport Plan.

Mountains of Mail
Two Nottinghamshire
residents have been
sent a mountain of
scam mail in the post
equivalent to their own
body weight in the last
two years
These extreme examples
show the pressures that
residents across the county
are facing from organisations
bombarding them with junk post
– with the victims sometimes
receiving between 18 and 20
letters a day.
Nottinghamshire County Council’s
Trading Standards team has
revealed the shocking statistic
that 70kg of junk mail has been
removed from two homes in the
county – giving an insight into the
work they are doing to support
people whose lives are being
blighted by such mail.
Most of the mail is junk but it
is usually delivered amid the
legitimate mail they are receiving
in the post, meaning residents
can then miss vital hospital
appointments or important bills
as they wade through the stack of
phoney correspondence they are
sent.
Sharon May, Nottinghamshire
County Council Trading
Standards Officer, said:

Historic
Abuse
Nottinghamshire Police has
confirmed an inquiry has
commenced to investigate a
number of individual allegations
of historic abuse affecting
ten former children’s homes
or residential premises in the
County of Nottinghamshire.
The Operation Xeres team is
investigating a small number of
complaints of historic physical,
emotional, mental and sexual
abuse reported by people who
were in care for a variety of
reasons, but who are now adults.
The inquiry is looking at
individual allegations relating to
people aged under 18, both male
and female, ranging between
1940 and the 1990s at Skegby
Hall, the former Whatton Young
Offenders Institution, Repton

None of the allegations relate to
the premises’ current use.

Get Into Golf
It’s not an
understatement to say
that exercise is a miracle
cure for health and
wellbeing – and playing
golf is a great way to
tap into the amazing
benefits of keeping
active.
Whatever your age you can
reap the health benefits of
exercise on the golf course.
So whether you’re a deskbound twenty something or
looking to get out and about
more now you’re retired –
getting active with golf is
one of the best ways to stay fit,
active and healthy through
your lifetime.
An average game
of golf will see
you walk briskly
for around six
miles. This will
easily achieve the
recommended
150 minutes
of moderate
exercise a week
recommended by
the NHS to keep
healthy.

Golfing Myths
1- Golf takes all day to play - Golf can take no longer than any other hobby or pastime, there
are quicker ways to play the game that fit in with busy lifestyles in which two hours is now the
span for most leisure activities such as going to the cinema, dinning out, playing tennis, bowling,
going to the gym.
2- Golf is a stuffy game - golf is no longer stuck in the Victorian age, most clubs nowadays are vibrant and
welcoming with a range of memberships to meet all lifestyles.
3- Golf is a game for men - Anyone can play golf, whether male or female and regardless of your ability. There
are some great female players such as Laura Davies and Paula Creamer.
4- Golf is an expensive game - It doesn’t need to be expensive, you can choose a course to learn for around £25
and buy a start up kit for as little as £200 or even eBay for around £50.
5- You need your own set of clubs - You don’t need equipment to get started, most golf centre will provide you
with clubs, just need to turn up in comfortable, casual clothes and trainers.
Oakmere have retained the services
of world renowned Golf Course
Architects Mackenzie & Ebert to
do a re-design of both courses,
change the layout, 9 hole par 3

system for all 3 courses. Mackenzie

holes 1,3, 5 & 11, given
the full Mackenzie &

Daryl St John Jones,
Director of Golf at
Oakmere Park has said:
“This is a very exciting
time for members at
Oakmere Park, after seeing
the standard of work during
phase 1, the members are fully
supportive and behind the new
plans. As Director of Golf, my job
is to ensure minimal disruption
to the playability to both courses
whilst this work is being carried out
and this objective was successfully
achieved this winter.”
It is planned for all 18 holes of the
Admirals Course to be completed
and the new course layout in play
by 2018. The new Commanders
course layout should be in play by
2017 and the par 3 Academy course

The club in Calverton,
Nottinghamshire is set in 125 acres

You don’t have to be a golfer to

has to offer.
As I was transported by Green

of the wonderful course and its

How wonderful it would be to

some of Nottinghamshire’s finest
countryside!
I can imagine a line of golfing
buggies all decorated with
flowers and ribbons for the
couple and their guests with
champagne flowing. You would

photographs.
The club is a popular venue for
weddings, conferences and private
parties. Not only that but anyone
who wants to treat themselves and
the family for a traditional roast

the week can make a booking.
Consultant Manager Dave

Club was more than just a
golf club.
He said: “This is a superb course.
The greens are second to none and
it could be argued that the 18th

in the county. You wouldn’t find a
friendlier club in the area and we
offer a lovely varied menu open to
everyone. You don’t have to be a

Regulars to the club house say
their Wednesday morning breakfast

to break.
Anne said: “I like the comfortable

Apprenticeships open
door to employment at The
University of Nottingham
Traditionally, university might not
be the first place young people
think about apprenticeships.
However, as one of Nottingham’s
biggest employers with over 7000
members of staff, the University
of Nottingham has offered an
Apprenticeship Programmes since
September 2012.
Claire Cawthorne, Apprenticeship
Programme Manager for the
University of Nottingham
explains: “The University is
committed to building strong
links with the local community
and recognises that a particular
problem in Nottinghamshire is
youth unemployment. We can
offer fantastic opportunities for
young people wanting to undertake
an apprenticeship.” She adds:
“The University of Nottingham
is renowned for its world class
teaching and research and it’s easy
to forget that to enable all of this
to happen we need a quality and
successful workforce.”
Cara Higginbottom, 18, apprentice
accounting technician said: “I
feel that the apprenticeship has
helped me develop my working
skills. I am able to work around
the different sections within
the finance department, gaining
valuable experience. I also attend
college on day-release and the
work I do at college makes more
sense to me when I do it at work.”
The University’s Apprenticeship
Programme offers more than paid
work experience and a nationally
recognised qualification. It has
worked hard to ensure there is a
good support system in place for
the apprentices.
Claire Cawthorne explains: “For
many apprentices it’s their first
full time job and for some it can
be a big learning curve. To ensure
each apprentice achieves their
full potential, they are assigned a
mentor within the workplace who
are a ‘friendly face’ they can turn
to for support and guidance. The
apprentices also get together every
month and work on developing
skills such as being an effective
team member, time management
and communication skills.”
“Whether, at the end of the
apprenticeship, they choose
to move on or stay with the
University, I want every apprentice
to have had a fully rounded
experience and a great start to their
future career.”
The University is looking to
recruit a number of apprentices in
September 2015. Details of the
vacancies will be available via the
National Apprenticeship Service
website, as well as http://www.
nottingham.ac.uk/jobs/home.aspx
within the next few weeks.
