September…
in North Plainfield. The Indian
Summer evenings are warm. The
Watching Mountains are about to
explode with color. The smell of
burgers hangs in the air from
Steer Inn, Opdyke’s and Gino’s.
It’s 1964 and 308 kids are walking
down the “new building’s” halls in
their crisp Farahs bought from
the Varsity Shop and plaid skirts
from Teen Town. Here is the
bright and shiny new Senior Class
of NPHS. The Class of ’65.
They drive to school in reclaimed
late 50’s cars and 65-cc Hondas.
They talk about their summer
days on Jersey beaches. They
plan for fall weekends filled with
football; movies at the Liberty,
Strand or Edison Drive-In, for
Canuckateens and the Arabs.
They compare notes on the best
places to park: Johnson Drive,
Green Brook Park, or behind
Great Eastern Mills.
