What does Food Service and Hospitality
Career Pathway offer students?
How do I enroll in Food Service and
Hospitality classes?
Inform your high school counselor as soon as possible about
your interest in this exciting program. Course selections
throughout your high school career will need to coordinated
to meet high school graduation, UC/CSU requirements, and
successful completion of the career pathway.
Is there high school or college credit?
Yes and Yes! Food and Nutrition is approved for UC/CSU
elective credit. Food and Nutrition and Introduction to Food
Service and Hospitality Services (formerly Culinary Arts) are
articulated with the Ventura Community College System.
Students who meet requirements and complete the
application process are awarded free college credit, which
may transfer to other college programs throughout the
state or nation.
Any other benefits?
Students enrolled in the program will meet requirements for
the NPHS Majors Program and receive further recognition
for their career preparation. Students with excellent
performance and committed focus to career preparation are
great candidates for various scholarships offered by colleges
and FHA-HERO.

FHA-HERO – The CA Affiliate of FCCLA is the career
technical organization for students enrolled in the NPHS Food
Service and Hospitality Career Pathway Program. The
association is affiliated at the national level with Family, Career
and Community Leadership of America (FCCLA). The
organization is sponsored by the CA Department of Education,
US Department of Education and the American Association of
Family and Consumer Sciences. As a co-curricular organization,
all students enrolled in the NPHS Food Service and Hospitality
Career Pathway Program benefit from membership. As an
integral part of classroom instruction, students participate in
community service, personal growth, leadership development,
career preparation, member recognition, and social, recreation
and fundraising activities. The NPHS FHA-HERO Chapter has
a proud history of achievement with members serving in officer
positions, winning scholarships and top honors at competitive
recognition events at the region, state and national levels.

PA
Through the course sequence instruction and hands-on lab
activities, students are prepared for a wide range of careers in
restaurants, hotels, schools, resorts, hospitals, and institutions.
The pathway focuses on key aspects of the industry including
sanitation and safe food handling, food and beverage production, nutrition, food service management, and customer
service. Many students enrolled in the program get a head
start on their career through an internship or entry level
job in the food service industry. A student who successfully
completes the pathway program is qualified for success at an
entry level food service job or for post-secondary technical
or college programs. A self-motivated person might also take
these skills and open a catering or food service business.

Kick Start Your Career
Food and Nutrition 1 and 2
Prepare for entry level employment and advancement in the
exciting food service and hospitality industry.
• Executive / Sous Chef

• Wait Staff
These concentration courses prepares students to understand
the scientific principles of nutrition, the relationship of nutrition to health and well-being, and careers related to food and
nutrition. Instruction includes nutrition and health, safety
and emergencies, food safety and sanitation, meal management, food preparation, food purchasing, food in culture, the
science of food and nutrition, food costs and production and
food technology. Food and Nutrition 1 is a prerequisite for
Food and Nutrition 2.
Introduction to and Advanced Food Service
and Hospitality Services
These capstone courses prepare students with food production,
preparation, and service skills for employment in institutional,
commercial, or independently owned food establishments or
other food and hospitality industry occupations. Instruction
includes topics such as overview of the hospitality, food
service and restaurant industry; planning, selecting, storing,
purchasing, preparing, testing, serving and selling quality food
and food products; nutritive values; safety and sanitation;
use and care of commercial equipment; management of food
establishments; cost and profitability analysis; side work and
customer orders; and handling cash and credit transactions.
Introduction to Food Service and Hospitality Services is a
prerequisite for Advanced Food Service and Hospitality
Services.

• Food and Nutrition 1 & 2 is UC/CSU approved for
college elective credit.
• Food and Nutrition 2 and Introduction to Food Service and Hospitality Services are articulated with Ventura Community College District and are specifically articulated with the Oxnard Community College
Culinary Arts and Restaurant Management Associate Degree Programs. Students who successfully complete these courses and meet requirements may apply for free college credit. You jump-start your college career while in high school!
• Introduction to Food Service and Hospitality Services students complete ServSafe Food Safety training and certification, required to work in a restaurant.
• Class facilities, food production labs and procedures followed are required in the food service industry and give students experience for entry level jobs.
• Students in Food Service and Hospitality Services
operate an on-campus restaurant, The Panther Café, and participate in catering projects to gain experience
in restaurant operation and management and serving customers.
• Students in Advanced Food Service and Hospitality Services complete an internship in an area restaurant.
• Students who complete the Food Service and
Hospitality Career Pathway Program and meet
requirements may receive Ventura Career Education
Center Certificate of Proficiency and may test for
National Restaurant Association Pro-Start Certification.
• Students in the Food Service and Hospitality Career
Pathway Program meet requirements for NPHS Majors Program recognition for your career planning and
preparation in high school.
