Pedagogy, Play and Professionalism- ECE Conference June 5-6, 2015
Welcome to the 2015 Provincial ECE Conference and Trade Show Pedagogy, Play and
Professionalism! Throughout this conference Early Childhood Educators will be
challenged with new ways to think about their profession, while reflecting on current
practices.
Pedagogy is generally defined as an understanding of how learning happens, or the art
and practice of teaching. As Early Childhood Educators, we have chosen to work in a
profession that blends caring and education into meaningful experiences for young
children. Throughout this conference we hope that participants have the opportunity
to reflect on their practices and refine their art, or pedagogy, by:
Looking closely at what they do each day, incorporating the power of play
Reflecting on why they are doing what they do each day
Obtain an understanding of how their actions impact children and families
We invite you attend and share in this exciting opportunity to be inspired by two highly
respected presenters in the ECE Profession, Teacher Tom and Christine McLean! The
break out session being held on Saturday will equally delight as it features respected
experts from right her in Nova Scotia! You won’t want to miss this exciting event!

Workshop Series Choices (1 ½ PD hour)
10:30-12:00 (participants choose one from A, B, C, D or E)
A. The Playing Brain- Participants will have an opportunity to consider developmental biology and the
purpose of play through conversation, brain games and moments of playfulness. During the session we
will take a whirlwind tour of the human brain and the role of play in development and wellbeing. We
will link back to Vygotsky, Piaget, and Cslkszentmihali to reaffirm our understanding of the value of play
in early learning and education. Sound scary? It’s not! It’s fascinating and important too! In order to
preserve a place for play in public education, early childhood advocates need to be clear about what
play is, what it is not, and how it lays the groundwork not only for academic learning but a fulfilling life.
“The very existence of youth is due in part to the necessity for play; the animal does not play because
he is young, he has aperiod of youth because he must play” Karl Groos, German evolutionary biologist,
1861-1946 Presenter: Carrie Melsom is the Coordinator of the ECE Resource Centre at the Nova Scotia
College of Early Childhood Education. She recently rediscovered her passion for play and has
developed a new appreciation for its role in brain development, wellbeing and early learning.

“Remembering to Play- Again!”
Presenter: Christine McLean
This keynote will take a look back at the “Bad old Days” of play, provoking a reality check for those of us
who remember what it was like to be told to “go outside and play” for hours at a time. This will be
contrasted with the reality of today’s child who spends lots of time in front of a screen or in adultdirected activities with little or no time to “just play”. Through a discussion of the latest research in
human development along with some common sense tips, we will examine a compromise which allows
children the benefit of free play with (hopefully) fewer trips to the emergency room!
Christine McLean has been involved in Early Childhood Education in a variety of capacities and
positions since 1988. She has a Bachelor of Child Study from Mount Saint Vincent University,
Bachelor of Education from Acadia University and Master of Education from University of Cincinnati.
Currently Christine is Manager of the ECE program at the College of the North Atlantic and is a PhD
student at the University of Toronto.

“Exploring the Power of REAL PLAY” Replacement session for Teacher Tom
Presenter: Bev Bos and Michael Leeman
While most people assume it is the responsibility of adults to provide a play environment for children, this
presentation will focus on real play and how children, by nature’s design, spontaneously engage in play. The
responsibility for adults is to understand how play happens, where dplay happens and why plays needs to happen
and how it enriches our lives physically, emotionally, spiritually, cognitively and creatively. The Conditions for
growing wiser and their connection to play along with the implication of not playing as children will be explored.
Real play is essential to development as a contributor to the well-being of all young children. The presenters’
concern regarding the possibility of society’s having gone too far past remembering how to play and why it is
crucial to our survival as a species will be discussed. Images of the Roseville Community Preschool will be
included. Presenter: Bev Bos has been the Director and Teacher at the Roseville Community Preschool in
Roseville, CA for over 40 years. She is the author of four books; Don’t Move the Muffin Tins, Before the Basics,
Together We’re Better and Tumbling Over the Edge MICHAEL LEEMAN is a talented teacher and musician who
