Academic Advising & Counseling Center
Blinn College has professional advisors on campus to
provide confidential assistance, preferably by appointment, with no cost to the students. Walk-in appointments
will be accepted if an advisor is available. The advisor
will assist with the most frequently expressed student
concerns. The Academic Advising & Counseling Center
is located on our main Bryan Campus at 2423 Blinn
Boulevard and the Dental Hygiene program is located at
301 Post Office Street.
Arrange for an advising appointment with the Academic

establish with the Allied Health Facilitator a file for general

Dental Hygiene Program
The discipline of Dental Hygiene is the science and
practice of the recognition, treatment and prevention of
oral diseases. The methods of preventing oral disease
and promoting wellness are provided by the dental
hygienist in collaboration with the health care team in a
variety of settings.

Dental Hygiene Program
General Information
Associate in Applied Science
Upon satisfactory completion of the two-year program,
a student receives an Associate in Applied Science degree
from Blinn College. The student is eligible to take the
National Board Dental Hygiene Examination and a regional/state board clinical examination.1 Licensure varies
among states. In Texas, licensure is based upon successful
completion of the above-mentioned exams, submission of
a complete application with supporting documentation and
results of fingerprinting. For more information regarding

Accreditation
The Blinn College Dental Hygiene Program is approved
by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The
program is accredited by the Commission on Dental
Accreditation and has been granted the accreditation
status of “approval without reporting requirements”.
The Commission is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education. The

Admission Criteria
Initial selection is based on GPA, HOBET scores, completed general education courses, and a general category which may include letters of recommendation, work/
military experience, professional certifications, community
service , earned college degrees, and observation of a
registered dental hygienist. Interviews will be conducted for
the top 30 applicants with scores added to the initial selection criteria. The top 12 applicants are accepted.
All pre-requisite and other general education requirements must be achieved with a “C” or better. Students
must earn a minimum of 75% on all DHYG courses to
progress in the program.

3-5 years of application:

What skills are required to perform
all the dental hygiene tasks?
A dental hygienist must possess motor, visual and social
skills that would enable him/her to meet the program
objectives and perform job duties required in the profession. Specifically, the individual must:
• be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and
in written format (with or without accommodations),
in order to respond to patients, dentists, co-workers
and other health care providers.
• have sufficient visual acuity (with or without accommodations) to view oral conditions and radiographs,
aiding in determining the status of health; identifying
anatomy/anomalies, observing patients’ conditions
and perform in semi-dark conditions.
• possess fine and gross motor skills (with or without
accommodations) to handle a variety of instruments
and small objects.
• be able to complete tasks/examinations within
required time limits in the classroom, laboratory and
in the clinic.
• demonstrate emotional health required for utilization
of intellectual abilities and exercise good judgment.

Dental Hygiene Application
Procedure
Prospective students MUST provide the following information on or before the due dates to be considered for
the Dental Hygiene Program. Please follow all directions in
your application packet.
1. Request a Dental Hygiene application packet from
the Dental Hygiene office after Sept. 15. Contact
Linda at 979-209-7272
2. Submit the completed packet with all supporting documentation, including HOBET scores and
official transcripts from all colleges attended, to:

3. Selection into the Dental Hygiene Program does not
guarantee admission to Blinn College. Applicants
must meet requirements of the Texas Success
Initiative (TSI) or be exempt. All applicants must be
deemed “College Ready” under the TSI using one
of the following assess-ments: THEA, COMPASS,
ACCUPLACER, or be exempt through a qualifying
score on TAKS, SAT, or ACT. Other exemptions may
apply. Contact an advisor for more information.
4. Students are responsible for meeting all deadlines
and submitting complete application packets.
Students are strongly encouraged to make an appointment for dental hygiene advising with the director of the
Dental Hygiene Program 979-209-7272 and to make
an appointment for general academic advising with the
Center for Student Development at 979-209-7250.
What is the cost?
The student’s greatest expense is at the beginning of
the first semester of each year when instruments and supplies must be purchased. Tuition and fees vary depending
on student’s residency status determined by Blinn College.
