games with their success in maths later in life. This
workshop will introduce six quickies and equip you with a
game pack to take away and introduce to children. The
pedagogy of game-play and how children learn from each

This workshop will focus on ideas with a view to considering
how they might be adapted so they can be taken into

The workshop will be interactive in terms of working on
mathematics, and a discussion about how reasoning and
problem solving can be woven into all mathematics lessons.

Exploring Concepts With
Handheld Technologies
Audience : Secondary
Presenter : Stephen Kean
Director, Science Studio
Grasping the idea :
Hands-on maths
This session will engage secondary mathematics teachers
to consider utilising the latest graphic calculators as a
means to promote student 'self-discovery' of mathematical
concepts. The onus will be on strategies to equip students
to explore and hypothesise for themselves using these
personal and powerful handheld learning devices.
No previous experience of graphic calculators is assumed
or required; just an enthusiasm to consider the implications
of using an extremely useful teaching and learning tool.
Presenter : Noel Jackson
Head of Education,
International Centre for Life
This workshop is a graphic example of how hands-on maths
creates an engagement with maths that has a reach far
beyond the classroom. Cyclic numbers are an important
part of everyday life, particularly time keeping. They can
also provide the basis for some fascinating and foolproof
card tricks. Students from KS2 all the way through
secondary school are delighted to discover engaging
activities which rely on the power of maths rather than slight
of hand. Whats more, because they want to show their
families and friend, the interest is infectious.
Tracking Pupil Progress in
the absence of Levels
The workshop will demonstrate how schools can assess
pupil progress using Standard Assessments.
Audience : All teachers
By comparing ability with attainment this will give a whole
pupil view, will highlight underperformance and types of
reports available for all Stakeholders.
Audience : All teachers
