Issue #1 │ May 2015 E-news of the NuLu Business Association WELCOME TO THE FIRST NULU NEWSLETTER! GILL HOLLAND The NuLu Business Association is a committed and vibrant group of property owners, business owners, local residents and even non-local supporters who are advocating for continued positive change in our area. This newsletter is another great step towards continuing to get the word out about all the good things happening here in our district in Louisville, KY. We are a dues-supported volunteer organization, with elected officers and a strong board, and we need your input and ideas for stories for future editions. We aim to make this a monthly newsletter and to re-purpose many of the stories herein so they can live on our website www.nulu.org. Our strategic vision for NuLu is four-fold: to develop a sustainable pedestrian oriented landscape, to promote living in, eating in and visiting NuLu, strengthen our partnership with Metro government and promoting NuLu as the coolest and greenest arts district in the country. We are making great strides in all four areas and look forward to working with you to keep up the positive momentum! ▪ PHOENIX HILL NULU FARMER’S MARKET The Phoenix Hill NuLu Farmers' Market will open for its 9th Season on Tuesday, May 19. And from that it is beautiful. It’s also a Platonic idea that if it functions well it is good. I translated this idea to art more or less... If the form is useful, then it’s beautiful. Adolf Loos once said that you should never paint an object with a color that it has naturally, like a wooden door should never be painted brown." * "It doesn't matter what the art looks like but how it’s used." ** --Franz West Tim Crowder begins from Franz West's utilitarian, anti-aesthetic impulse to make delicate, skillfully crafted works that question and lament some of our most politically charged manipulations of the natural world. This is Crowder's second solo show with garner narrative. Resume available here: http://www.garnernarrative.com/ TimCrowderresume.docx *from "Waking Up With Zombies: An Interview with Franz West" by Tom Eccles for the Baltimore Museum of Art **from "Designers for a Day: Sculptors Take a Turn" by Roberta Smith, New York Times, Sept. 10, 2004 ▪ NULU'S 2015 SPRING FLING │ May 9th, 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Whether you're looking to spruce up your home with new decor, add some spring/summer fashion to your closet, or eat some amazing food we've got you covered. Seiffertt, Trudy Miller, Joe Ley and Bill Marzian) In 1990, Joe Ley, of Joe Ley Antiques, approached local business and property owners to join him in signing a petition to the City of Louisville to create a plan for dealing with vagrancy, theft and panhandling in the area. This group met several times and eventually signed and presented their petition to the City of Louisville and in response, the City sent Carol Hensley, from Neighborhood and Economic Development, as the City liaison to help with addressing problems in the area. Carol suggested that by forming a neighborhood association, the group could exert more influence on local government. She was instrumental in assisting with the formation of the original neighborhood association. As many of you know, Carol became Executive Director of the Main Street Association. In early 1991, The East Downtown Business Association was formed and officially registered with the State of Kentucky. Some of the founding members were Luckett Davidson, Cleve Gatchel, Pat Gittings, Stuart Goldberg, Billy Hertz, Roy Hunt, Joe Ley, Trudy Miller, Brad Ogden, Russ Raque, Rev. Gordon Seifert and Barbara Smith. Some of these names you will recognize as still active members in the Association. Several years ago the organization’s name was changed to the East Market District Association and recently to the NuLu Business Association. Although the word “Business” has always appeared in the group’s name, the Association has had a residential component within the group and residents have an equal share in voting on issues that matter to the entire neighborhood. Meetings are held the second Wednesday of each month and they are open to the public. Association trivia: Our presidents in order of service were Russ Raque, Barbara Smith, Billy Hertz, Rev. Gordon Seifert, Thelma Dunlevy, Brad Ogden, Bill Marzian and currently serving in that position is Gill Holland. ▪ COPPER & KINGS SPRING AND SUMMER TOUR SCHEDULE For Spring & Summer, Copper & Kings is open for public touring Thursday-Mondays from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., with hours extended to 9 p.m. on Fridays.
