Castle Hill
CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
Excavation of the station area continues
Welcome to our Castle Hill quarterly construction update. These newsletters are designed to keep you
informed of project activities and community involvement in your local area. The $8.3 billion North West
Rail Link is Australia’s biggest public transport project currently under construction and a priority
infrastructure investment for the NSW Government. Thiess John Holland Dragados has been contracted
to build the tunnels and civil works for five of the eight new stations and two service facilities.
Excavation of the rail crossover cavern is complete
CROSSOVER CAVERN EXCAVATED
A significant milestone has been achieved at the Castle Hill Station
site with excavation of the rail crossover cavern completed. The
cavern has taken about six months to excavate using a road header,
dozers and excavators.
About 14,400 tonnes of shotcrete was sprayed, 420 tonnes of
mesh installed and 1820 rock bolts drilled into the walls to support
the structure. The 115,000 tonnes of material removed from the
cavern was transported offsite to be re-used in land developments
across western Sydney.
The cavern is located at the eastern end of the site and measures
160 m long, 23 m wide and up to 17 m high. It is designed to allow
trains to cross from one track to the other.
Excavation of the station area is continuing and about 60 per cent
complete, while the arched tunnel sections at the site’s western
end are also being permanently lined with concrete. Works at the
Castle Hill site are underway around the clock to prepare for the
arrival of the tunnel boring machines (TBMs), called Elizabeth and
Florence, as they pass through on their way to Cherrybrook.
The next phase of works involves waterproofing the cavern and
installing a permanent concrete lining on the walls. About 22,113
tonnes of concrete will be needed to form the lining; this amount
would fill about three Olympic-sized swimming pools.

supporting the tunnelling machines as they head towards Castle Hill
and Cherrybrook. Currently their support site is located at Bella Vista.
If your family has a child with a terminal
condition, Bear Cottage can provide
respite and palliative care in a homelike
environment. Bear Cottage at Manly is the
only children’s hospice in NSW.

The other two machines, TBM3 Isabelle and TBM4 Maria, are also
working hard as they tunnel between Cherrybrook and Epping.
