From Our
Medical Director
When I wrote this column a year ago
we were just a few months into our
new model of care. For the first time,
we were seeing people covered by
the Oregon Health Plan and getting some reimbursement
through our partnership with CareOregon. As I look back on
all that we have accomplished since then I feel a mixture of
wonder, pride and excitement.
Our staff enrolled almost 700 individuals in health insurance
last year. Many of these individuals had been uninsured for
years or even decades. Many had a backlog of health care
needs they had been trying to manage on their own. With
coverage through the Oregon Health Plan, our patients
now have access to dental care, an extensive formulary
of medications, a broad network of specialists, emergency
care and hospitalization all at no cost. What a wonder!
We ventured into new territory last year as we expanded our
services to include daytime primary care visits, women’s
health care, and cancer screening. I am so proud that we
have been able to grow and change while maintaining
our high quality of care and favorable health outcomes for
our patients. We still depend on our wonderful volunteers
to staff our evening clinics, but most of our visits now
take place during scheduled daytime appointments. We
provided dozens of screening tests for breast, cervical and
colon cancer in 2014, many for people who had never had
cancer screening before. We referred over 100 patients
for specialty care for a wide range of conditions including

diabetes complications, debilitating arthritis, sleep apnea,
hepatitis, cancer and heart disease.
While there are great things happening within our four
walls, our staff is also doing some powerful work out in the
community. Last year we had a presence at almost thirty
community events and provided blood pressure screening
for almost 700 individuals – triple what we did in 2013.
Later this spring you’ll be hearing a lot more about Cuts
and Checks, our new barbershop blood pressure program.
We are engaging barbers as advocates for community
health and providing them with tools to address high rates
of heart attack and stroke among African American men.
Now, that’s exciting! Follow us on Facebook to see photos
and stay up to date on the latest developments.
As we have made the transition to our expanded model
of providing care to people with health insurance during
2014, many new patients have come through our doors.
We continue to hear from people who have had nothing
but negative experiences when seeking help for their
medical needs. As they get to know our staff and providers
and feel the love we have for our patients, a quiet but
profound change takes place. We see people blossom and
make positive changes in their health. When they leave our
office to see a specialist or other new provider, they do
so with greater confidence. They expect to be treated well
and speak up when things don’t go smoothly. All of this is
possible because of the generous support of the hundreds
of people who understand what we are all about. You are
one of those people. Thank you.

volunteering and spending time with his family, he’s
traveling the country as Kaiser Permanente’s Executive
Director of Medicaid.
Looking Good!
In February our Board and staff members gathered for
a day-long retreat to talk about how North by Northeast
has responded to health care reform, our vision for the
future, and how we are going to achieve that vision. You’ll
be hearing more later this year as our Board kicks off a
campaign to celebrate our 10th anniversary in 2016!
Thank You All!
Four of our five new Board members
In the past six months we’ve welcomed five new members
to our Board of Directors. Each brings a unique set of skills,
experience and perspective; they all bring a passion for
health equity and a love of North by Northeast.
Avel Gordly (on left): Avel served three terms as a state
representative in the Oregon Legislature before her election,
as the first African American woman, to the Oregon Senate
in 1996. She is an organizer and activist as well as a
beloved teacher and mentor. Avel was one of the original
members of our Advocate Board and served in that role
from 2006-2014.
Denise Johnson (not pictured): Our newest board member,
Denise has 14 years of experience working collaboratively
with diverse communities to improve population and
individual health. She currently serves as the Health
Promotion Coordinator at CareOregon.
Jessica Lee (second from right): A former NxNE staff
member and active volunteer, Jessica is the Leadership
Development Manager for the Coalition of Communities of
Color.
Charlene McGee (second from left): Charlene is a
Liberian-Oregonian grassroots activist and public health
enthusiast. She served for many years on our Advocate
Board and currently works for the Multnomah County
Health Department as the Refugee Health Coordinator.
James Schroeder (on right): James has helped start over
a dozen health clinics and was a crucial adviser as we made
our transition to a new model of care serving those covered
by the Oregon Health Plan. As a Physician Assistant, James
volunteers once a month seeing our patients. When he’s not
With our new model of care we are able to do more for
more people, and we are increasingly recognized as a
model of providing quality care to those who have been
poorly served by the health care system.
You were more generous than ever before in 2014, and we
appreciate it so much! We were thrilled to surpass our yearend fundraising goal of $50,000 by over 50%. Your support
means even more great things for 2015 and beyond. Thank
you!
In addition to generous year-end gifts from individuals and
families, we received several grants that are enabling us to
expand capacity and launch new programs.
A $47,000 capacity-building grant from Metro’s North
Portland Enhancement Fund will allow us to serve more
of our North Portland neighbors by hiring operational and
development staff.
As part of their Community Health Improvement Plan,
Health Share of Oregon awarded us a grant of $119,000
to address health disparities by further developing our
Community Health Worker and group education programs.
Kaiser Permanente awarded us a grant of $7,500 in
support of an all-day clinic staffed by Kaiser employees at
North by Northeast on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
The Oregon Health Authority has extended additional
funding so we can continue our insurance enrollment
assistance program.
We received $25,000 from Legacy Emanuel Medical
Center to launch the first year of our Cuts & Checks
program. Through Cuts and Checks we engage barbers as
advocates for community health and spread the word to
black men about the importance of blood pressure control.
You’ll be hearing lots more about this program soon!

We kicked off 2015 with some new t-shirts designed by
Annette Sabo Brooks, who is responsible for the warm and
professional look of all of our materials. Our logo is featured
on the front of the shirt, and “Health Happens Here” is on
the back. They are popping up all over! Our patient Abigail
Lawrence (below) traveled to Alabama last month with her
father, who marched 50 years ago in Selma. Here she is
at the Dexter Parsonage Museum in Montgomery, former
home of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
One of these beautiful shirts can be yours! Make a donation
of at least $100 through the end of May and we’ll hurry one
off to you just in time for the warm weather. Visit our website
at www.nxneclinic.org and click on “Make a Donation” or
send us a check using the enclosed envelope. Please be
sure we have your phone number or email address so
we can be in touch to get your t-shirt size and preferred
mailing address.
