Candidate Latisha Barcus DBN: 09x132 IEP: No ELL No Applicant At PS 132: PA President, Vice President, Secretary (present), Title 1 Representative and PA member Background at Henry Street High School Personal Being the parent of three boys, all of whom attend and attended public schools, I see the stark Statement differences between schools that struggle to get parents engaged in their children’s education (e.g.: weak Parent’s Association, low attendance at parent-teacher conferences, etc.), and those schools where parents are vocal in their opinions and input effort in improving their child’s school. Schools where a greater percentage of parents are actively engaged are schools that may attract more grants and services from non-profits for supplies and equipment for school staff. Parents who are active in their children’s school can facilitate more fund-raising activities for trips and extra-curricular activities. As a CEC member I will advocate for parents, and empower them with knowledge about what is going on in their child’s school, to make sure they know that they are not voiceless and powerless in the school’s vision and academic direction. My youngest daughter is Background currently in the 6th grade, in a district 9 middle school. Personal I want to guide, I want to fight for change for better education with our children. I want to support the Statement children of the public school system. I want to give the children a reason to go to school. Knowledge is a key to success. Public schools can use more programs to help children also enjoy learning. We can teach children how to explore their dreams to be doctors, lawyers, entertainers, as well as teachers. Personal I am the mother of three wonderful children, I love to volunteer in my daughter school, I am very Statement happy to be involve in my children's education., I didn't know what this meant until my second daughter started headstart, I got involved in the DAPC and it was a wonderful and productive experience. I my current employment, I work with children who are developmentally delayed, severely emotionally disturbed or medical fragile, in which I coordinate services with school and assist parent obtain the services needed fro their children. As a Hispanic mother and a Social Worker who has witnessed the broken educational system and how it impacts the lives of our children (the minorities), is my motivation to wanting to form part of the education council. I want to help raise better standards, and advocate for better education. I believe (personal statement) that we all, and most definitely our children needs, better yet deserves a good education. A good education should not be denied, nor mishandled down with poor structure and standards that welcomes failure.
