Come grow with us It seems like only yesterday NYFAC began with a dream and a need. Five families, brought together out of a desire to help their children - and an overwhelming love for them. Fast forward 17 years and we’re here tonight, with you, celebrating some very worthy people. Each of tonight’s honorees has touched a life and has in turn helped us to continue our mission. Today NYFAC has over 150 employees and provides over 20 different programs to the families we serve. And each year we increase our numbers. In 2013 we provided nearly 30,000 unique visits to our families. And NYFAC is growing. With a brand new logo, new website and new programs, we are aiming to bring our services to even more families. This summer, we plan to break ground on our new “Center for Physical Achievement,” which will help us to focus on the physical, as well as the emotional, well-being of our individuals. But more than that, our new Center will serve as a community hub and, in the case of an emergency, and evacuation center. We have received so much love and support from the community over the years that this is just one way for us to say “thank you.” We are embedded in the areas we serve and truly feel that everyone affiliated with NYFAC is a member of our family. So thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for helping NYFAC to grow and to further our mission of “Helping Parents… Help their children… Peace and love always, President & CEO Andrew Baumann One family at a time.” 2015-Covers_Layout 1 2/20/15 1:56 PM Page 3 The NYFAC Foundation would like to thank all those who donated and helped make this evening a grand success! On behalf of the officers and board of directors, I thank you for your support of our organization and our mission of “Bettering the lives of those with autism.” Please enjoy the evening knowing you are helping us meet the goals of our Foundation in accomplishing our mission. In the past year, we have funded New York Families for Autistic Children Inc. (NYFAC) in several ways. We granted funds to provide a stipend to the adults with autism as part of the vocational program. We also provided the funding needed so the playground could be netted for the safety of the children. You may have heard of the tragic incident this year in which a child with autism choked on her lunch while at school. The aide left the child unattended and the child died. This child was a part of the NYFAC family. Her family could not afford the funeral, so the NYFAC Foundation picked up the cost so that she could be laid to rest in a respectful manner. We have also helped other organizations that requested our assistance. We provided a grant to the Ascent School in Long Island for the purchase of 13 iPads. We funded a program at Eden II and Genesis so the teachers could buy school supplies. Our Foundation teamed up with JDRF and held the first annual “LOOP” bicycle tour through Queens and Brooklyn. The Foundation is proud to sponsor two Challenger teams with W.O.R.K.S. Little League. We have also helped numerous local organizations with sponsorships and donations. This year we have been challenged to raise $150,000 toward NYFAC’s next project – The Center for Physical Achievement. Groundbreaking should occur this summer. In order to meet this challenge, and to help other organizations, we hold several fundraisers during the year. As you leave tonight you will be given a “goody bag.” Inside, amongst the goodies, you will find several “save the date” cards. Please consider helping us out by attending any or all that appeal to you. You can also visit us on our website, www.nyfacfoundation.org, for future events. Look for us on Facebook and Twitter as well. Without you, we cannot possibly meet the challenge. Without you, children and adults with autism will not get the services they deserve. Remember, 1 in 68 children born this year in the United States will be diagnosed with autism. Almost everyone in this room tonight knows someone on the spectrum. Please help us help them. Thank you. Sincerely yours, Chairman of the Board NYFAC Foundation Michael Brothers 2015-FullPages_Layout 1 2/20/15 2:00 PM Page 2 We are bettering the lives of those with Autism! She represents the 8th District, which includes El Barrio/East Harlem and the South Bronx. Speaker Mark-Viverito was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She worked for over a decade in local activism, nonprofit organizations and labor before being elected to the City Council in 2005, as the first Puerto Rican woman and Latina to represent her district in the Council. In 2009, she was elected to her second term in the City Council, during which she served as Chair of the Committee on Parks and Recreation, the founding Co-Chair of the Progressive Caucus and as a member of the Black, Latino and Asian Caucus. In 2011, she was one of four Council Members to pioneer the first-ever Participatory Budgeting process in New York City. She has been a dedicated public servant for 20 years, serving in key governmental positions on both the city and state level. Melinda represented Forest Hills, Rego Park, Kew Gardens and parts of Maspeth, South Elmhurst and Richmond Hill as City Council Member from 2002 to 2009. She rose to Chair the influential Land Use Committee which, under her leadership, secured private-sector partnerships that led to the creation of over 15,000 units of affordable housing. Melinda championed zoning measures that paved the way for redevelopment projects in all five boroughs, while safeguarding communities from overdevelopment. Prior to being elected to the Council, Melinda served as Director of Community Boards for Queens Borough President Claire Shulman, helping to develop city budget priorities, plan economic development projects for Queens, and designate sites for city facilities. Melinda also represented Forest Hills, Rego Park, Middle Village and Glendale in the State Assembly from 1994 to 1999. During her tenure, Melinda authored and helped pass 16 laws, including requiring HMO’s to provide women with direct access to critical gynecological services. She served as Chair of the Urban Health Sub-committee, and was responsible for bills that increased penalties for various forms of domestic abuse. Melinda also sponsored and passed the historic Kendall’s Law, which helps prosecutors pursue cases of long-term, repeated child abuse. Born and raised in Forest Hills, Melinda is a graduate of the public school system. She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and received her juris doctorate from St. John’s University School of Law. While at St. John’s, she was published by the Journal of Legal Commentary and interned with the tenant rights division of the Legal Aid Society, the US Attorney’s Office and Judge Michael Mukasey in the Southern District of NY. Her father, David, was the founder and conductor of the Queens Symphony Orchestra and her mother, Jeanne, was the founder of the Queens Council for the Arts. Melinda lives with her partner, radio personality and Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa, and their two children, Carter and Hunter. They are raising their children in the same Forest Hills house Melinda grew up in and her parents purchased more than fifty years ago. 2015-FullPages_Layout 1 2/20/15 2:00 PM Page 5 Joseph Gambino Man of the Year AWARD Joseph Gambino leads by example. It was the way his own father taught him, and the way he lives his life. A graduate of La Salle Military Academy and having attended NYU, Gambino began his career with a garment business on Bath Avenue in Brooklyn. Later, he took over a faltering trucking company, now known as Dynamic Delivery, which expanded its reach to the entire U.S. and even China. It was during his career, while his children were in school, that Gambino got involved in giving back. He was one of the founders of the Father’s Club, one of the biggest fundraisers for Visitation Academy, where his daughters were students. Gambino also ran the Father’s Club at Xaverian High School when his son was in attendance. Both Joseph and his brother Thomas count among their biggest accomplishments the founding of the Gambino Medical Foundation at LIJ, which supports, among others, the Gambino Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit. After their children graduated, Gambino and his wife Arlene moved to Neponsit, where they hoped to relax and enjoy life, each other – and the beach. It was then that Gambino met Joseph Mure, and a friendship of giving back was reignited. Now Gambino supports the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), the Special Olympics, the developmentally disabled, including those with Rett Syndrome, the Wounded Warriors, and, of course, New York Families for Autistic Children (NYFAC). He was even instrumental in building a “learning room” for students with autism in a school in Rockaway. It was only later that he learned his own grandson had autism. Gambino was soon approached by a man with whom he had worked in the garment district, whose grandson Rocco was very ill. Gambino began the initiative, galvanized a community, and through the help of the Bensonhurst/Bay Ridge and Howard Beach Kiwanis, among others, little Rocco’s family was helped to purchase a specialized van for their son. Gambino has been feted many times for all his good will and philanthropy, but through it all he remains humble. “I enjoy [giving back],” he said. “I do it with my heart.” 2015-FullPages_Layout 1 2/20/15 2:00 PM Page 6 Jack Friedman Advocate of the Year Jack Friedman helps businesses get more and net more.
