Charles Bruner serves as executive director of the Child and
Family Policy Center (CPFC). He
holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in political science from Stanford University, and a B.A. from Macalester
College. He served 12 years as
an Iowa state legislator.
Through CFPC, Charlie provides technical assistance
to states, communities and foundations on child and
family issues and heads the technical assistance
activities of the federally established National
Center for Service Integration. Through funding
from the Ford, Kauffman and Packard foundations,
he also directs the State Early Childhood Policy
Technical Assistance Network, providing evidencebased assistance to state decision-makers on school
readiness issues. He is currently working with the
BUILD Initiative on developing a Learning Center on
Health Equity and Young Children
Charlie has written widely on public-policy
approaches to developing more comprehensive,
community-based responses to child, family and
neighborhood needs, including “Clinical Health
Care Practice and Community Building: Addressing
Racial Disparities in Healthy Child Development.”
He lives in Ames, IA.
