Many of you will have already tested the waters with your boats, others may be contemplating doing so and others might just be using this sunny Sunday to get your boat headed down to the show, but the forerunning! cast was so foreboding, with heavy rain warnings and wind warnings that discretion seemed the better part of valor and The opening event on our seawe stood down. It seems the weather, son of activities is the Peachland World while still poor, was not as bad as foreof Wheels, the classic boating portion of cast that morning, but as a result of the which this year was unfortunately rain, no boats showed up to show. We washed away by rains. Many had grand hope for a better forecast next year! intentions of participation and we N e w M e m b e r s We are very pleased to welcome these new OACBS Members: Karen & Lee Kersch of Blairmore, AB Ian & Barb Fraser of Victoria, BC Steve & Louise Leslie of Mission, BC And “THANK YOU” to those Members that recently Renewed! P a g e 2 Planning is well underway now for the 5th Annual Sicamous Antique and Classic boat show, to be held August 7-9th at Sicamous. We have already had a number of commitments from friends in neighboring chapters in the US and new OACBS members from the island, so we are very optimistic about show prospects for 2015! Please refer to the OACBS website for all show details, and we can report that our registration page is fully up and running now. We are always looking for show volunteers to help in several areas of organization and operation, and we would encourage and welcome inquiries from all members in this respect. Please reply by e-mail to either Paul or myself, and we will be happy to put you to work! D r y ship. Several of your BOD members have given upwards of 10-20 years of service, and many others have been active for well over 5 years. Experience shows us that turnover and “new blood” is critically important in keeping organizations fresh, vital and active. For this reason we are again appealing to our members to consider this form of contribution. If you have an interest you wish to explore, please contact me and I would be happy to discuss the opportunities available. We would love to have you join us! We are looking forward to a great season of boating in and around BC and the PNW, and cannot wait to see you at the Sicamous show! Karen W. Harrison Interim President, OACBS You may have noticed the more timely arrival of your ACBS Rudder magazine this spring. The ACBS, in response to the very prolonged delivery imposed by poor US postal service, undertook to seek alternative, speedier means of delivering the Rudder to us Canucks. We received word back in March that a new bulk mailing contractor had been selected and through a different routing (via Europe!), we could expect delivery up to two weeks sooner than previously. The logistics escape me, but it seems to be working! Your Board of Directors sent out an email several months back, looking for volunteers for OACBS BOD service next year. Volunteerism is very important and is the lifeblood of hobbyist organizations such as ours, and we are hoping to attract a few interested folks from our member D o c k D r y D o c k P a g e 3 T H E 5 T H A N N UA L S I C A M O U S A N T I Q U E & C L A S S I C B OAT S H OW A u g u s t 7 t h — 9 t h , 2 0 1 5 We are very pleased and excited to invite you to participate in the 5th Annual Sicamous Antique & Classic Boat Show to be held at the Main Street Landing Docks on the channel at Sicamous, BC; on Friday August 7th through Sunday August 9th. Because I’m 65, 40 lbs. overweight and have COPD, I having been giving it a pass for years; but last year I decided to listen to my friend and event hostess, Karen Harrison, and go. Tim and Deb Salt from Big Sky also joined us for the trip up Seymour Arm. We beached our boats on a lovely sand beach at Steamboat Bay on the north side of the river. We then proceeded to follow the well maintained pathway into what seems to be a temperate rainforest for the walk up to the top of the falls. The forest canopy offered us some cool shade for our walk. On the way up we managed to enjoy some inspiring vistas of the river and the forest. Once at the top we crossed a bridge over the river, stopping again to enjoy the scenery and take pictures. The walk down the south side was breathtaking. There are 5 separate waterfalls, all different, and a significant piece of BC wonderland not to be missed! Again on the way down the equally well maintained trail there were even more fabulous vistas and viewpoints from which to take pictures. At one point about half way down you can even walk out into the falls, something we saw some college kids enjoying. There are the remains of an old hydro plant there, which I understand was built at the turn of the last century to power a saw mill. Once and at the bottom we crossed another bridge to get back to the beach and the boats. The only thing that could have made it better would have been more of our wood boat friends to joint us! All in all a wonderful couple of hours, and as Monty python would say - SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT! This is something that I’m looking forward to doing again this year; and I’m hoping that more of our friends and show attendees also come and enjoy with us. P a g e 5 F R O M D r y O N E O F O U R N E W E S T K A R E N A N D L E E D o c k M E M E B E R S K E R S C H Karen and Lee have always been drawn to vintage and antique items. Our interests vary from the vintage muscle cars we drive to antique furniture in our home and architecture we love to visit in Europe. What all these interests have in common is unique design & styling features and a part in history. What we like most of all about these things is not just the artifacts but the camaraderie, passion, great stories and memories the people associated with these interests openly share. A number of years ago we were thrilled to be invited to our first antique boat show in Sicamous BC and privileged to spend the weekend touring in these wooden time capsules of art. We saw many fabulous boats and met some really nice people. As of yet we do not own a classic boat but we do have an appreciation for the labor of love these boats require. The closest we get in our toy collection to a classic boat is Karen's family 1968 Seadoo that we've literally spent decades collecting parts to start a restoration. One day we hope to own a wooden boat, whether we buy one or build one frothe vintage Chris Craft plans that Karen's dad passed down to her. Your ACBS Board of Directors believes it would be in the best interest of the classic boating hobby for ACBS to establish closer relationships with our partner maritime museums. To achieve that goal, Gene Porter and the Museum Committee has put together a list pairing our ACBS chapters with local maritime museums that we currently have a relationship with at this time. We would encourage you to contact these museums and build upon the common interests our organization currently share. You might find a wealth of information that can be shared with your chapter or the ability to hold a shared event.” As a result of this effort, the Okanagan Chapter has decided to become Members of the S.S. Sicamous Marine Heritage Society in Penticton, BC. There are two organized events at the ship at this point for the summer. They include the second annual Pirate Festival on Father's Day, and a Steam Machines Show July 18-19. Otherwise the ship is open for tours an there are several weddings and private functions booked. We encourage all of your o try to visit the Museum this summer. Website www.sssicamous.ca If you are interested in joining the Sicamous Society click on the anchor to the left.
