Fire is an experience all homes work hard to avoid. But despite best
efforts, a fire may still break out. Is your home ready?
See how your home’s fire prevention and management plans stack up
and consider other practical tools and ideas to enhance them from risk
and crisis management experts who know, through this pre-Convention
session.
Learn best practices from the first-hand experiences of two homes
that handled high-profile fire incidents and hear from fire and CCAC
representatives about how they coordinated with the homes to ensure
residents’ safety and care. Hear from an emergency preparedness expert
about elements that are commonly missing from fire safety plans. Get
solid advice on fire prevention, with attention given to safeguarding
contractor compliance with your home’s policies and with insurance
requirements.
Fire incidents require consistent messaging to families, the public and the
media during a stressful time. Make sure you’re saying the right thing to
the right people through tips from a public relations professional. Finally,
stay updated with the legal risks involved in a fire incident and get tips
on what to be prepared for from a health law expert.

Alive Inside: Using Music to
Unlock New Pathways for People
with Dementia
It can be a great challenge to truly reach someone with a dementia
or similar diagnosis. Digital technologies and personalized music
offer the potential to stimulate the latent memories of a person with
dementia and forge exciting new connections. See it in action through
a special screening of, “Alive Inside.” This Sundance Film Festival
award-winning documentary follows the trailblazing work of social
worker Dan Cohen as he tailors musical playlists to the individual
histories of his dementia clients. The results are heartwarming,
sometimes astonishing and may even bring you to tears.
Following the screening, Cohen joins a larger panel discussion about
the use of music as a therapeutic tool in dementia care and firstperson examples of such programs in member homes. These include
iPod programs developed by the Alzheimer Society of Toronto and by
Cohen’s own not-for-profit project, Music and Memory. Gain insight
into why such approaches can work from a clinical expert and learn
the science behind music’s restorative power to stir memory, calm
chaotic brain activity and bring the listener into the present moment.

The “Butterfly Model”:
Person-Centered
Dementia Care
Tuesday April 14, 2015
This Would be Funny if it

Embracing Change with
Enthusiasm and Vigor
Wednesday April 15, 2015
Spencer West is living proof of the transformation that
can happen when we redefine “possible.” At age five he
lost his legs from the pelvis down. As an adult he used his
hands and wheelchair to make it to the top of Tanzania’s
Mount Kilimanjaro. Hear his captivating story, told with
humour and humility, and learn how to apply the insights
he has gleaned from a lifetime of overcoming obstacles
and navigating a world that can be hostile towards those
with disabilities. West will show you how to identify
roadblocks and press on past them, inspiring us all to
believe we can tackle any goal, personal or professional.
Get set to be challenged and inspired as leading U.K.
dementia care consultant David Sheard talks about what it
takes to make a home truly person-centered. The founder
of Dementia Care Matters, Sheard and his team developed
the “Butterfly Care Home” model, where staff move like
“butterflies,” engaging with residents where they are at,
instead of rigidly sticking to predefined routines and roles.
Drawing from key findings of a large-scale audit of dementia
care homes, the outspoken and passionate advocate will
explain the difference between “doing” and “being” personcentered care, the implications for staff recruitment and
appraisal, and what this culture shift means for leadership.
Spencer West is an international speaker, author and
activist. He is the author of Standing Tall: My Journey,
and was the subject of the 2012 documentary Redefine
Possible: The Story of Spencer West. He has spoken around
the world on stage and in the media and appeared with
such luminaries as Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Rick Hansen
and Mia Farrow. He serves as an international leadership
facilitator and holds an honorary doctorate from Thompson
Rivers University.
David Sheard is chief executive of Dementia Care
Matters, which he founded in 1995. The organization is an
internationally-recognized leader in dementia care training
and service development. Sheard has also held several roles
as a dementia care specialist: as a social worker in hospitals
and the community, as a manager within the U.K.’s National
Health Service and as a university lecturer. He is visiting senior
fellow in the School of Health and Social Care at the University
of Surrey and holds an honorary doctorate from the university.

MOTOWN
TRIBUTE
The Sounds of Motown Show
Get on up on the floor – it’s time to take a spin through Motown!
Start your evening with a delicious banquet dinner and follow it
up with a course of musical soul food featuring the rhythms and
songs of such greats as the Supremes, Jackson 5 and Gladys
Knight and the Pips. The grand finale happens out on the dance
floor, backed by a nine-piece band. We guarantee the hardest part
will be staying in your seat!
