April KnightLetter - O`Gorman High School

Knight Letter
April ‘15 Edition
O†Gorman High School
3201 S Kiwanis Ave
Sioux Falls SD 57105
A Message from the Principal:
Dear O’Gorman Parents & Students:
It is hard to believe that we have reached the point where we are staring at the final two months of the school year. As
spring arrives and brings with it beautiful weather, we also begin to see the excitement on the faces of our seniors as they
realize their senior year is nearly over and graduation is around the corner. We have been blessed to have the opportunity
to educate such a talented group of individuals who have excelled in the classroom as well as in their activities and
organizations.
PAB INFORMATION:
Graduation and summer are fast approaching which means there are positions opening up on our Parent Advisory Board
(PAB). The PAB for OGHS is both similar and yet different than you might expect when you think of a PTA, PTO or the
Parent Advisory of the O’Gorman Junior High. At OGHS, this is a group of parents who represent their respective
parishes and act as liaisons between the school and parish. This group provides ideas, planning and organizational help for
many activities for our students and staff.
The board meets once a month with the principal. The focus of the meetings is to discuss various events, topics, provide
input, and to be a "sounding board" to the principal. Each advisory member will be asked to bring comments, concerns &
ideas from his or her parish to the meeting and bring back information as well. Parents interested in being a part of the
PAB will need to submit their names to their parish priest by July 1st. The parish priests will provide their selection to the
principal and will be notified by the end of July/Early August. The monthly meeting is generally the 2 nd or 3rd Thursday
from 11:30 am – 12:30 pm. in the administration conference room of OGHS, and lunch is provided.
BARNES & NOBLE:
Barnes & Noble along with our AP teachers & Advanced English teachers have teamed up to create an O'Gorman Summer
Reading Book Fair on Saturday, April 25th and Sunday, April 26th. The book fair will allow students to purchase their own
copy of the required readings for advanced English courses and for any other AP courses. All advanced and AP English
courses require summer reading along with our two AP History courses (U.S. and World). Students who have registered
for those classes will want to take advantage of this opportunity. In addition, all O'Gorman supporters who purchase new
books, summer reading materials, etc. can support the O'Gorman Summer Reading Book Fair. More information will be
e-mailed to our families.
END OF YEAR INFORMATION:
You will find information pertaining to the end of the year in this Knight Letter. This includes graduation information,
semester exams, and the College Board’s Advanced Placement exam schedule.
“Our faults are like a grain of sand beside the great mountain
of the mercies of the good God.”
St. John Vianney
Yours in Christ,
Kyle L. Groos
Principal

SENIORS should be putting the finishing touches on college plans. Many seniors have received scholarships of various
amounts. These students should inform the counseling office by completing the senior survey that will be handed out to them
in May. If a senior has not started the financial aid process, it is highly recommended that this be done as soon as possible.
The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is available on the web at www.FAFSA.ed.gov. First, the student and
the parent must apply for a PIN (www.pin.ed.gov). The FAFSA is used by colleges to determine financial aid packages
(scholarships, grants, loans, work study) for students.
SFCS Foundation scholarship application forms are now available on the SFCS website at
http://www.sfcss.org/scholarships/ . There are many SFCS Foundation scholarships available for students in grades K-12.
Students will upload their transcript to the application. Transcripts are available on Infinite Campus, under “Reports”.
Senior Awards Mass: Thursday, May 14th @ 8:15 am. Seniors who have received scholarships should inform the counseling
office by completing the senior survey which will be handed out to them in May.
Future Plans Survey: Another survey we ask the seniors to complete is the future plans survey. We will send final
transcripts to the school indicated on this survey. Students will be given this form in May.
Alumni Survey: Seniors who represent the last child in their family to graduate from O’Gorman will be asked to complete an
information sheet updating family data.
SHADOWING: The Shadow Ed representative (Linda Rodman) is at our school during 4B and 5C lunch periods every
Friday. If students are interested in shadowing in a particular career field, they should stop by the counseling office or contact
Linda at [email protected].
JUNIORS: This is the time of year to do some college exploration/visits, and talk to the reps that visit our school. Many
juniors are registered for the April ACT test. June is another good test date. The June ACT test is on June 13, with a
registration deadline of May 8. The more you do this spring and summer, the easier your senior year will be.
COLLEGE REPRESENTATIVES SCHEDULED: These visits give students an idea of admission requirements, costs,
programs available, and timelines to follow. All college visits are listed in the daily student bulletin, and posters are displayed
with dates and times. Students must get a pass from the counseling office no later than 8:00 a.m. on the day of the visit.
The following colleges are scheduled at this time:

During 2013, the O’Gorman High School librarian began taking applications for a new committee. This group of eight would
come to be known as the Library Teen Advisory Committee.
The group was tasked with sharing ideas on improving library programming, planning activities and events, sharing book and
resource ideas, and promoting the library.
In the beginning of the 2014-15 school year, our group grew to 25 students! These students have worked to plan for such
events as Teen Read Week (Oct.), book clubs (Nov.-Apr.), Love Your Library (Feb.), Teen Tech Week (Mar.), and School
Library Month (Apr.). Without the help from the committee, the librarian would not be able to plan for and manage all these
great experiences.
This is what some committee members wrote about their desires to be on the Library Teen Advisory Committee:
Emily K.: “Personally, I love to read, and I’d appreciate the opportunity to help everyone find at least one book that they’ll
enjoy, even if they don’t necessarily like reading.”
Samantha M.: “I want to be on the Teen Advisory Committee because I love to read and tell other people about what I have
read, and I am always looking for a good book.”
Rachael W.: “I want to be a writer, so I should be involved with activities that get me near books. I really like working with
others and running activities/programs.”
Alex A.: “I really enjoy seeing what the library means to and does for students, and I want to take part in helping with that.”
Taylor B.: “I want to be on the Teen Advisory Committee because I think I can bring new ideas and excitement to the
library. Also, I just love to read!”
Isaac H.: “I saw it as an opportunity to become more involved in the library.”
Ramona A.: “I have always been interested in reading, but with school and other activities, I don’t have too much time. This
would be a good chance for me to reconnect with reading while being more involved at school.”
Miranda G.: “I think it would be a great experience to try something new this year. I also enjoy reading immensely and
would like to help give input about different ideas our library could do.”
Cheyenne C.: “I absolutely love books and reading, and I would really like to be a children’s librarian someday. I’ve been a
volunteer at [a Siouxland public library branch] library for…years.”
