Trend Aquafresh Hydroponics Organic Fish and Vegetable Production Owned by Mr. Ton Boekestyn, this 2 ha greenhouse business is a combined fish culture and vegetable operation recently converted from cut flowers. Trout are grown with organic food in fish tanks. The fish waste is then filtered, digested and the nutrient solution is used to feed the leafy greenhouse vegetables. Park Lane Farms/ Tweed Inc. Medicinal Marijuana The Park Lane greenhouse operation has recently been purchased by Tweed Inc., a licensed producer and seller of medicinal marijuana. Mr. Jason Goodale, production manager, will discuss protocols for growing medicinal marijuana as well as different strains of marijuana and their different ratios of THC (psychoactive) and CBD (nonpsychoactive or medicinal) compounds. Niagara College Teaching Brewery and Winery Dr. Amy Proulx will explain the programs of the Food and Wine Institute at Niagara College and lead a tour of the Teaching Brewery and the Teaching Winery. Niagara College takes a relatively new approach to combining teaching and research with an apprenticeship program for students in beer making and/or oenology (winemaking). Research is done in cooperation with industry partners with funding provided through NSERC and business on a 1:1 cost sharing basis.
