Welcome to NPU
Located in historic city Xi’an and founded in 1938, Northwestern Polytechnical
University (NPU) is affiliated with the Ministry of Industry and Information
Technology. NPU, as a member of the "Excellent Nine (E9) Union of Universities”
in China, has justifiably become an educational and research center for
northwest China.
NPU, research-oriented, interdisciplinary, and international, is outstanding in
aeronautics, astronautics, and marine technology at home and abroad. While
NPUers excel at science and technology, they are also distinguished in the fields
of management, humanities, economics, and law.
NPU covers an area of 840 acres with 2 campuses and 16 academic schools.
Offering undergraduate and graduate programs, NPU has a vibrant and diverse
community which consists of about 3,500 dedicated faculty members and 27,000
motivated students in total, with over 1,000 overseas students from over 70
countries.
About Xi’an
Xi’an, located in central-northwest China, has recorded the great changes of the
country like a living history book. Once the terminus of the Silk Road and a
melting pot of cultures and religions, Xi’an is home to the world-famous
Terracotta Army. With millenniums of Chinese history on display, Xi’an is very
proud of its scenic sites including the splendid Bell Tower and Drum Tower, the
characteristic architecture of Chinese Islam at its finest, the magnificent history
museums, and two elegant Buddhist pagodas.
Xi’an is a city of about eight million people in the modern Chinese urban context.
Known as a paradise for foodies, it is replete with high-rise construction, bustling
shopping malls and diverse local cuisines.
Moreover, Xi’an is acknowledged as the largest and most important base of
scientific research and a center of higher education, national defense and
high-tech industries in China.
About the Program
Launched in 2010 by the U.S. and Chinese government, Sino-U.S. Scholarship
aims to provide American college students more opportunities to study in China
with substantial scholarship funding. Northwestern Polytechnical University
(NPU), under this initiative, joins the program supported by the Chinese
Scholarship Council.
The program, composed of Degree Scholarship and Non-degree Scholarship,
accepts altogether 9,000 American college students to study in China from 2014
to 2017. By living and studying in China, the American students will witness the
rapid modernization of China and experience Chinese culture firsthand.
I. Degree Scholarship Program:
This scholarship is open to U.S. students applying for bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees at NPU. All the courses except the Chinese language
course are taught in English. The scholarship covers the registration fee, tuition and housing fee. It also offers free preparatory Chinese language and
culture courses, yearly stipend and medical insurance.
Duration and Benefits
Students can apply for one year of Chinese language preparatory study before their major study.

Application materials:
1.Online application. Applicants should register and access online:
http://laihua.csc.edu.cn/inscholarship/student/stuChooseLocale.do?chooseLoc
ale=chooseLocale&language=english (The agency No. for NPU is 10699.) and
print the application form. Please provide the address, passport number and
contact information correctly and in detail since we will send the admission
decision through these messages.
2.A notarized highest diploma or certificate should be provided. If the applicant
is studying at university or working in a company, he/she has to submit the
proof of attendance or a working certificate provided by his/her university or
company.
5.ONE copy of published theses or academic achievements should be
provided (applies to graduate applicants only).
6.The applicants will find online a Physical Examination Form. Print it and bring
it to a physical examination appointment with a physician. After this
appointment, the Physical Examination Form needs to be notaried. It will be
invalid if there are any pages missing, or no photo or no seal on the perforation
or no signature by the hospital or doctor on the form. The result of the
examination will be valid for 6 months. Please arrange the time of your physical
examination accordingly.
3.The applicants should provide their university transcript.
Research proposal in English or Chinese (applies to graduate applicants only).
(Applicants should apply online first, and then sign it and send TWO
printed copies of the documents to the International College of NPU by
mail.)
4.TWO recommendation letters should be provided in English or Chinese each
written either by a professor or an associate professor (applies to graduate
applicants only).

II. Non-degree Scholarship Program
This scholarship is open to American college students seeking to earn credit
during their study at NPU. Before the students apply, make sure that students’
credits are transferable. The students’ primary university or college in the U.S.
should sign an agreement with NPU guaranteeing the credit transferral.
Unlike the graduate program, students are not required to pursue their full degree
at NPU. NPU offers free preparatory Chinese language and culture courses for
students of different levels in small size classes. It also offer a wide variety of
academic courses (taught in English) in Aeronautics, Astronautics, Marine
Technology, Material Science, Engineering, Applied Economics, and
Management for scholarship winners, which are open to the international
students. Students will be provided with free tuition, medical insurance,
registration fees and dormitory fees. In addition, Students will receive monthly
allowances.

Application Materials
Students who have interest in studying at NPU may submit their application to
the International Studies Office of their own universitie or college. NPU will
accept those students recommended by the International Studies Office of
their own universities. For long-tern exchange or short-term students, the
application is open for the whole year.
