Project Instructions Sew Easy ! Tutu Skirt Finished Size: 10 1/4" (Length) Supplies Needed • • • • • • • 1 pkg. Satin (45" x 72") 1 pkg. Tulle (54" x 108") 1/2" Elastic (waist measurement plus 1") Coordinating thread Sewing machine and basic sewing supplies Iron Safety pin Instructions Read directions completely before beginning project. Use a 1/2" seam allowance unless otherwise noted. Refer to cutting guide to cut satin and use template to cut circles. Dia. A Cutting Satin: 1 - 11" x 44" rectangle (skirt) 1 - 3" x 30" strip (waistband) 1 - 2" x 18" strip (bow) 40 - 1 1/2" circles (flowers) Tulle: 6 - 10 1/2" x 43" rectangles (overskirt) Satin Cutting Reference Bow Waistband 1/2" 1/2" Satin Satin Skirt Sewing 1. To hem the satin skirt, fold under double 1/4" on one long edge; topstitch. 2. On the right side of the skirt, measure in 1/2" from each side at the top edge and mark. Layer four pieces of tulle with side edges at marks and top and bottom edges even with satin. Pin along top edge and baste. Satin skirt will extend 1/2" at each edge (Dia. A). Dia. B 1/2" 4 Layers of Tulle 2 Layers of Tulle 1/2" 3. Place the top two layers of tulle together with edges even and fold in half so that long edges meet. Pin the cut edges of tulle to the top edge of the tutu skirt with edges even; pin and baste. Sew 1/4" from the top edge through all layers using a long stitch for gathering. Stitch again 1/2" from the top edge. Pull bobbin threads to gather edge (Dia. B). Page 1 Care instructions: Machine wash gentle cycle in cold water. Hang to dry. C ½" 4. For waistband, fold each short end under double 1/4"; press and topstitch. Fold waistband with wrong sides together so that long edges meet; press. Open, then fold one long edge 1/2" to the wrong side; press. 5. With right sides together, lay gathered edge of tutu skirt on top of flat edge of waistband and distribute gathers evenly; sew (Dia. C). Note: Satin skirt will extend 1/2" on each side of waistband. Topstitch Dia. D 6. Fold pressed edge of waistband over to the wrong side of skirt and line up pressed edge with seam; baste. On right side of waistband, topstitch along the bottom edge and again close to the top edge (Dia. D). 7. Sew side edges. Tip: Pin edges of tulle away from the edges of satin skirt to avoid catching them in the seam. Note: This is the back seam of the tutu skirt. 9. To make a flower using four circles, fold each circle into quarters and secure the folds by hand stitching through all layers at the folded point. Sew the four folded circles together at the points to create the flower (Dia. E). Repeat for remaining circles to create a total of ten flowers. 10. Insert nine flowers into the folded layers of tulle through the back opening and place as desired. Hand stitch the back of the flowers to the tulle. Finishing Dia. E Fold 8. Attach safety pin to one end of elastic and feed it through the waistband opening above the back seam. Overlap ends by 1" and secure with safety pin. Try skirt on and adjust elastic if needed. Stitch elastic ends securely. Hand stitch opening in waistband closed. Fold Hand stitch to secure Handstitch together at points 11. Fold the bow with right sides together and using a 1/4" seam, stitch around all edges leaving a 1" opening at the middle of the long side for turning. Turn right side out and hand stitch opening closed. Tie bow and hand stitch flower on top. Hand stitch to waistband. Circle Template Page 2
