Principal’s News
Thank-you to Sam Dempster, Robyn Busuttil and the many parents who assisted at the
Mothers’ Day stall on Tuesday. My very best wishes to all the mums in our school community
for a special day on Sunday – you do an amazing job with your children and families.
Our Foundation Discovery Evening on Tuesday evening was well attended and the parents
enjoyed the opportunity to hear from our Foundation teachers about the programs and
opportunities available at Old Orchard. We are busy conducting school tours and it is always
a pleasure to show visitors around our school and to provide them with the chance to observe
students at work and to hear their thoughts about our school.
Our Year 3 and Year 5 students will be undertaking the NAPLAN assessments next week.
Our philosophy at Old Orchard is to prepare and familiarise the students with the test format,
but not to allow this preparation to compromise our regular teaching programs. NAPLAN data
sets are valuable in identifying particular strengths or weaknesses of individuals or cohorts,
but must always be considered as part of a broad assessment program that measures
student achievement in a wide range of contexts. Our students continue to perform very well
in NAPLAN testing and we look forward to receiving the 2015 results later this year.
We have had a positive response to this year’s swimming program. We are aiming for a
100% participation rate in 2015, as per the detailed information that was distributed to school
families last week.
Kind Regards
Duncan

EDUCATION COMMITTEE
The next meeting of the Education Committee will be on Tuesday 12th May at 7.30pm in the
staffroom. At this meeting we will be reviewing the Physical Education Policy and the
Language Education (Mandarin) Policy. Kevin Purvis our Physical Education teacher and
Tracey Ding our Mandarin teacher will both be in attendance at this meeting. They will speak
about their programs and answer any of your questions prior to reviewing the formal policies.
This is an opportunity for you to come and hear first-hand from the teachers as to what is
happening in these areas. There will also be time for you to ask questions specific to these
programs – relating to both the departmental guidelines and the current practice at Old Orchard
Primary School.
If you are not able to Attend but would like to have the opportunity to provide input relating to
these policies, please leave a message at the office and I can get the draft policies to you.
Our meetings always finish by 9.00. We would love you to join us for this evening.

P.E. NEWS & SPORT NEWS
Cross Country Running:
Tomorrow ( May 8th) is the Cross Country selection trials at OOPS. All Grade 3, 4, 5 & 6 children will participate in these trials during
their sport sessions. Children compete in age groups determined by their year of birth: 9 / 10 year old, born in 2006 and 2005; 11
year old, born in 2004; 12 / 13 year old, born in 2003 and 2002. For most children, this falls in the grade groupings. For a few children who are either older or younger in their grade grouping, it means they will compete in their age group and not in their grade
group.
The top ten girls and top ten boys in each age group will be selected to compete in the Blackburn District Cross Country event, on Monday, May 25th. For the grade 3 and 4 children, this will create a clash with the swimming program for that day. These children and
their families will need to make a choice about which event they prefer to attend on this day. Please contact me if you have any
questions about this issue.
Interschool Sport – Winter Round Robin – Wednesday, June 3rd.
Grade 5 & 6 children will be competing against teams from Blackburn Lake, Blackburn and St Thomas’ Primary Schools. The sports are:
AFL, Soccer, Netball and Tball. Children have been placed in their teams and are training for the round robin in their Friday sports
sessions.
Athletics Day – July 31st
Preparations are now beginning for our Athletics Day, in week 3 of 3rd term. Place the date in your diary and come along if you are able
to support the children!
Hooptime – September 3rd
The date is now booked in for Hooptime. Teams are currently being finalised, with training beginning in third term.
Swimming Program
For all children swimming programs begin shortly. The swimming program is part of the PE program and becomes the PE lessons for the
2 weeks each grade is involved in swimming.
HAWKS IN SCHOOLS PROGRAM 2015
As part of the Hawks in Schools Program, Old Orchard has received limited

These are General Admission tickets. If you would like to take advantage of these tickets, please contact the office via phone or
email.

They came to talk about fitness. First they talked about what they
did every day and what they ate to get fit. Then all of the grade 4s
went outside on the oval and played all different football related

LUNCHTIME CLUBS AT OLD ORCHARD
At Old Orchard we have recognised that we often have students who ‘struggle’ with the 50
minute lunch break for a whole range of problems – lack of friends, weather conditions, activities
of interest to them, the sheer volume of students in the yard.
In response to this, Enza Orsini as our Lunchtime Club Co-ordinator and a large band of
enthusiastic staff have donated some of their lunchtime to offer lunchtime club activities is Term
2 & 3.
These clubs will cover a range of activities – Board &Card Games Club; Quiet Club; Art Club;
Chess Club; Creative Club; Library Club; Mandarin Club; Mine Craft Club; Table Tennis Club;
Cooking Club. Clubs will be offered to different age groups and will operate on different days.
Students will be provided with the information by classroom teachers and then will be
encouraged to ‘sign up’. Depending on numbers, some clubs may need to be limited.
If as a parent, if you are interested in offering a club OR supporting our teachers to offer these
clubs, please contact Enza Orsini or Chris Hodder. To be part of these programs you would
require a Working with Children card.
We are very excited to introduce these clubs and are very fortunate to have such dedicated staff
who are ready to respond to the needs of our students.
