OOPS WEEKLY WRAP No. 3 Old Orchard Primary School, Koonung Road, Blackburn North 3130 19 Feb 2015 PH: 9877 7899 fax: 9877 7345 EMAIL: [email protected] Website: www.oldorchardps.vic.edu.au Principal’s News As Chris and I have moved around the school this week, we have both been extremely impressed with how well our students have settled into the school year. All classes are focused on high quality instruction and achievements in line with our philosophy of Great Expectations – No Limits. We have very high expectations of our students in all areas and will continue to challenge and support them to be the best they can be in all aspects of their education and school life. Members of the school community will be aware of the current health warnings in relation to Nanna’s Berries. I can reassure parents and carers that the identified products have not been used in either the Canteen or Kidzone. I have included a copy of the health warning in the newsletter for your information. We are looking forward to our Welcome Picnic next Thursday, February 26th as a fun filled way for new and existing families to celebrate the start of the school year. There will be lots of entertainment on offer and we hope to see as many families as possible in attendance. There are currently 16 of our Year 5 & 6 students attending the Department of Education Somers Camp. This opportunity is only available every couple of years to a limited number of students and provides the students with a chance to develop their leadership and problem solving skills, make new friends and test themselves by stepping beyond their comfort zones on activities such as the High Ropes and Giant Swing. We look forward to hearing their stories when they return. Congratulations to our 2015 Peer Mediators who received their badges at assembly last Friday. The Peer Mediators play an important role in managing minor disputes in the playground, supporting younger students to resolve their differences in a respectful and constructive manner. The Peer Mediators for 2015 are listed below: Teagan Haughton (Capt) Kaitlyn Oldaker (Captain) Amber Stewart Lauren Jones Aidan Reid Elias Kentrotis Emma Busuttil Kendall Gaudion Sienna Shacklock Grace Srivilai Ali Elliot Maheen Irfan Max Dooley Stephanie Antoniou Dylan Hosken Chelsea Wrightson Holly Richmond Katherine Hadji-Michael Sage Wolfenden Ebony Reid CALENDAR - TERM 1 Our first PFA meeting for 2015 will be held next Monday morning at 9.15am in the staffroom. We hope to see strong numbers in attendance at this meeting as we establish the PFA direction and key activities for the year. Monday evening will also see our first School Council meeting for the year, where our office bearers will be elected. Calling for all generosities! Would I be shaving my hair on the 13th March? Well that depends on how much $$ you willing would be willing to donate to make this happen. Below is the link to our OOPS team website: http://my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/TheOOPS You may donate online by clicking on the SPONSOR US green button using credit card OR simply give me cash and I’ll write you a receipt. My aim is $5,000 for a shaved head, however in a “fortunate” case if I get below $5,000 then I will be cutting and colouring my hair purple! No amount is too small or too big! I appreciate all your support!! So, SHOW ME THE MONEY $$$$ If you be generous, I’ll be “bold”! Tracey Ding Mandarin Teacher Crazy Hair Day will be on the 10th March (Tuesday). Students can come with colour sprayed / crazy hair and a gold coin donation for the Leukemia Foundation. I will collect the money during that week, together with any other donations received and if I reach my target of $5000 I will shave my hair publicly after school on Friday, 13th March. http://my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/TheOOPS Thanks heaps!!! Tracey Ding Do you speak Arabic? Old Orchard is currently looking for a language assistant who is willing to help in the classroom, working with 3 children who have no English. The language spoken is Arabic. We are hoping we might be able to find an Arabic speaking support worker to help these children settle into their new school where they are surrounded by children and teachers speaking in a very foreign language to them. We are envisaging 2 mornings possibly aver 2 hours, but this is yet to be decided. A working with children’s check, WWC is necessary. We can help you with this process if you don’t already have one. If you or someone you know might be able to help us please contact Michelle May (Tuesday or Wednesday) or Chris Hodder at the school 98777899. We would love to hear from you.
