GOD’S WORD TODAY “I will be their God, and they shall be my people.” This statement is at the heart of the new covenant God established with the house of Israel. God promised to “remember their sin no more.” This Lenten season has offered us opportuni es to recall the covenant God established at the moment of our bap sm. In that moment, we became the people of God. Too o en we forget this covenant and turn away from God. Lent is all about returning to the Lord with our whole heart. As the living word of God is proclaimed today, let us remember the faithfulness of our God and offer thanks for the gi of the Lord Jesus, who, as today’s le er to the Hebrews tells us, is “the source of eternal salva on for all who obey him.” From Saint Margaret Mary Sunday Missal, © J. S. Paluch Company Page Four OLD ST. MARY’S CHURCH March 22, 2015 STEWARDSHIP “I will be their God and they shall be my people.” - JEREMIAH 31:33 What does it mean to be God’s people? It means we recognize that everything we have and everything we are belongs to God. We aren’t “owners” of anything, we are merely “stewards” of the gifts God has given us. It means we are willing to use our gifts and our lives to care for our neighbors and the world, just as God cares for us. YEAR OF SACRAMENTS • ONE WORD AT A TIME Create To create in a strict philosophical and theological sense means to make something out of nothing. And that is true but incomplete. God made the world out of nothing, as the opening chapters of the Book of Genesis clearly state. There is another side to creation, however, that is not the province of philosophers but of poets. Dante Alighieri in the Divine Comedy wrote about the love that made the stars. Creation happens because of love. Marriage, of course, is ordered toward the creation of new life. Spouses cooperate with the Creator, and the result is new life in this world. And be clear about this—the new life that comes from the marital union of a man and a woman is not merely the product of a biological process. It begins and ends in love, human love, certainly, and—even more certainly—divine love. Louis J. Carneli March 22, 2015: FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT Page Five TESTIMONY OF RCIA CANDIDATES S journey into My Catholicism all started when my wife and I wanted a more grounded, faith based structure for our twin boys. The RCIA experience has brought us just that. The guidance and the education, from the scriptures of the church have been very informative and enlightening. My connection with God has become stronger as this process continues. As I get closer to being baptized I realize I have so much more to learn and I look forward to growing stronger in my faith. My time with the RCIA teachers and classmates including Father Paul and Father PJ and the many others has been very rewarding. I appreciate the time that all of them have shared with me. I am so glad we made the decision to commit to the Catholic religion. I look forward to further developing my faith. Rich Johnson Thir^ S]rutiny Today at the 8:30 AM Mass we celebrate the second of three scrutinies, rites for selfsearching and strengthening, for those preparing for Baptism at the Easter Vigil. The scrutinies are meant to uncover and then heal all that is weak in the hearts of the elect, and to bring out, then strengthen all that is upright, strong, and good. Let us pray for Lela Hall Durham, Nicole Johnson, Richard John Johnson, Lawrence Walter Miller and Lisa Sue Miller as they continue their faith journey toward the Easter sacraments. PARISH TRANSFORMATION UPDATE This week the Parish Transformation Team continued our discussions by focusing on our parish’s strengths that we should celebrate and build upon. In Scriptural terms, these are our “Pearls of Great Price.” The most common pearls that arose in discussion were: OSM is the manifestation of the Paulist presence. Diversity/multi-culturalism – deep and devoted Filipino and Ghana parishioners, higher number of young people than other parishes Sunday Hospitality Special history, living history that has adapted over time Old St. Mary’s School As we continue forward through our reflection on mission, these pearls will be important for us to remember and ask ourselves how we can use them as a strong foundation from which we can more effectively carry out the mission of Christ through our parish. Please continue to pray for the Parish Transformation Team. pirituality, compassion, and having a moral conscience were cornerstones of the upbringing I saw as a child practiced by my parents. As I grew into adulthood, I reexamined the importance of this value system to help me navigate and make sense of living in this complex world. I began to attend Old St. Mary’s regularly at Easter last year to keep me prayerfully grounded. Having been familiar with the Catholic Church through its teachings and education of family members and friends, I found this to be a comfortable home for me. This year, at Easter, I look forward to joining the community and strengthening my faith. Lela Hall Durham Young Adult Ministry volunteers at St. James Food Pantry.
