In 1776 thirteen colonies decided to defy the greatest empire in the
world. The colonists had no army or navy. One third of the colonists
were opposed to independence and one third were indifferent.
George Washington fought ten battles with the British and lost
seven of them. After 1778 it was no longer just a revolution. It
was now a world war as France, Spain and Holland declared war
on Britain and the war was fought from the West Indies to India.
England itself was in as much danger of invasion as in the year of
the Spanish Armada.

Class Size: Presentation
$45.00*
*Cost is more than $40 due to additional course materials.
The story of Manon Lescaut is the tragic tale of one of literature’s
and opera’s great femme fatales. It recounts the story of Chevalier
Des Grieux’s desperate passion for Manon and his constant betrayal
at her hands. Hear it come alive in two moving operas: Manon,
the lyrical, romantic French opera by Jules Massenet and Manon
Lescaut, the exciting verismo Italian opera by Giacomo Puccini.
Included will be short excerpts from the 18th century bestseller by
Abbe Provost which inspired both opera composers.

F11. The American Revolution
Tuesday 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. 6/2 – 6/30
Class Size: Presentation
$40.00
In 1776 thirteen disparate colonies decided to defy the greatest
empire in the world. The colonists had no army or navy. Fully one
third of the colonists were opposed to independence and one third
were indifferent. George Washington fought ten battles with the
British and lost seven of them. After 1778 it was no longer just a
revolution. It was now a world war as France, Spain and Holland
declared war on Britain and the war was fought from the West
Indies to India. England itself was in as much danger of invasion as
in the year of the Spanish Armada.
Tuesday 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. 6/2 – 6/30
Class Size: Presentation
$40.00
The recent Academy award nominated film American Sniper
was a realistic depiction of modern warfare and its physical and
psychological effects on a U.S. Navy Seal. Several films produced
since World War II have attempted to cinematically tell a more
realistic war story that shows the psychological effects of war. We
will screen films dealing with war and their effects on those who
must fight. Those films are: 12 O’clock High, The Cruel Sea, The
Enemy Below, The Bedford Incident, and Crimson Tide.
Instructor: Bruce Tucker
F13. Fathers in Film
Tuesday 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. 6/2 – 6/30
Class Size: Presentation
$40.00
Five talented directors and actors explore fatherhood from varied
perspectives. These films present the joys and challenges of the
father-child relationship: a classic wartime spy drama, comedies
that reveal the lighter side of being the “man in charge,” a widowed
lawyer and the image of the ideal dad. Our tentatively selected films
are: Father of the Bride, Watch on the Rhine, To Kill a Mockingbird,
The Chosen, and It’s a Wonderful Life.
Instructor: Sally Bauer Cohen
