NOTABLE AND NEWSWORTHY!

Student
of the
Month

Catholics devote the month of May to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
May crownings and other special events such as recitation of the Rosary take place in May in honor of Mary. Parents should encourage
Marian devotion in their children and take the month of May as an
opportunity to renew our devotion to the Mother of God by saying the
Rosary and adding special Marian prayers to our daily routine.

special thank you to 2nd Grade teacher Ms. Rounds for preparing our students for the sacraments, to Mrs. Recaido for overseeing the ceremony’s preparations, to Mr. Bryant and the
choir for the music, and to Fr. Angel for celebrating the ceremony. All are welcome to attend!

We want to wish Mia Brito, grade 7, the best of luck at the Archdiocese Speech Contest Finals
at St. Joseph of Yorkville School on Tuesday, May 5th.


Financial Workshop. The representatives from Price Waterhouse will be discussing different
topics in the world of finance with the students in a grade and age appropriate manner.
May’s Book of The Month:
When Pigasso Met Mootisse
By Nina Laden
When Pigasso met Mootisse, what begins as a neighborly
overture escalates into a mess. Before you can say paintby-numbers, the two artists become fierce rivals, calling
each other names and ultimately building a fence between
them. But when the two painters paint opposite sides of
the fence that divides them, they unknowingly create a
modern art masterpiece, and learn it is their friendship
that is the true work of art.
Nina Laden's wacky illustrations complement this funny
story that non only introduces children to two of the
world's most extraordinary modern artists, but teaches a
very important lesson & dash;how to creatively resolve a
conflict in a most unusual way.
********CONGRATULATIONS********

The Learning to Look Program uses formal elements of Art to make observations and understand the true meaning of an art
piece. Instructors from the Metropolitan Museum of Art have been teaching our students in grades 2-5 about the various art periods throughout the year. This wonderful program wraps up in May with an exciting field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in
NYC on May 12th in which the students will see the actual pieces of art they have been studying all year long.

The OLL community collected over $1,440 for young patients with cancer for “Pennies for Patients” in April. This fundraising drive
is part of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s School and Youth programs. The drive was a service project organized by K-2
teacher, Ms. Hunter. Perhaps inspired by the Lenten season’s call to sacrifice, members of our extended community gave generously to this worthy cause. The donation will help to support the development of treatment for cancer and improve the quality of
life for cancer patients and their families. Thank you!

This quarter our Second Grade is working on an exciting project, “The Great Mail Race”. The
idea is to write to a second grade class in each of the 50 states and see if we get a letter back!
Each student picks a school in his/her assigned state and sends them a letter and completed
Mail Race questionnaire. The hope is that schools will send and receive letters from different
schools and learn about other schools in the USA. A large map is also set up on the classroom
wall and “tags” each state where replies are received from. God Bless America!
In The Kitchen: Delicious Crepes for Mother’s Day Brunch! Remember Safety first in the kitchen!
Ingredients:
1 cup all-purpose flour; 2 eggs; 1/2 cup milk; 1/2 cup water; 1/4 teaspoon salt; 2 tablespoons butter, melted,
fresh berries, whip cream
Directions
1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and the eggs. Gradually add in the milk and water, stirring to combine. Add
the salt and butter; beat until smooth.
2. Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium high heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/4 cup for each crepe. Tilt the pan with a circular motion so that the batter coats the surface evenly.
3. Cook the crepe for about 2 minutes, until the bottom is light brown. Loosen with a spatula, turn and cook the other side.
Serve hot.
4. Add fresh berries and whip cream to top it off.
