Dynamic Catholic, Alive! – Holiness as Mark of the Church Holiness is one of the 4 marks of the Church (one, holy, catholic, and apostolic). The Church is holy because her founder, Jesus Christ, is holy, and Christ and the Holy Spirit sanctify the Church. In Ephesians 5, Paul tells that Christ gave Himself up for the Church “that she might be holy and without blemish.” As we learned last week, although we are all sinners, holiness is the vocation of each and every one of the Church’s members. Although the life of a person is in a land full of thorns and weeds, there is always a space in which the good seed can grow. You have to trust God. Pope Francis May 3, 2015 FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER Over the past few decades, Missouri has regained its reputation as a wine producing state. Before Prohibition we were among the leaders in the United States, even outranking California. Now there are vineyards everywhere, especially to the west of St. Louis along the Missouri River and also in the Meramec Valley and the Ste. Genevieve areas. So the image of the vine and the branches is not so foreign to us. What is difficult is to apply the truth about vineyards to our religious relationships. The words of Jesus sound appealing. Who doesn’t want to be supported and cared for? But loving communities don’t spring out of the soil automatically any more than healthy vines. It takes initiative and commitment to form a healthy community. We come together at weekend Mass as individuals. We can allow Jesus to form us into a worshipping community if we are willing to let the Holy Spirit move in us and among us. But if Mass is just a private act of worship between God and me, and we virtually ignore those around us, we shouldn’t be surprised if we don’t feel connected to one another. If we unfold our arms, take the scowl off of our faces, turn to those around us in welcome and peace, and lift our voices in prayer and praise, the Holy Spirit has the space and time and tools with which to form us into a real community of faith, hope, love, and praise! But we need to open our minds and hearts and lives to the Risen Lord for that to happen. CONGRATULATIONS TO THOSE NEWLY CONFIRMED last Tuesday night by Bishop Edward Rice at Seven Holy Founders. They have now been fully initiated into the Church. They have much to look forward to in the years ahead as they complete their formal education and move into their roles in life. May God bless and guide and protect them in the choices they make and the roads they take. May the grace of the Holy Spirit be with them and be a strong factor in their futures. MAY CROWNING AT 8 AM MASS ON WEDNESDAY You are invited to attend the All School Mass this Wednesday, where we will have the crowning of the statue of Our Lady of Providence. We honor Mary during May in a special way, and you are always welcome to visit church during the day to pray the rosary. We keep church open from after morning Mass until around 3:00 PM on weekdays. ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL UNDER WAY You are asked to stop in the vestibule to make your donation to the ADA for this year. Just fill out your card and make your donation. The proceeds of this annual archdiocesan fund drive assists many vital outreach programs of the archdiocese that benefit young and old. If you have not given before, please consider doing so. Any gift will be welcome. THANK YOU Last weekend we said farewell to Jacob Carlin, the seminarian who was assigned to our parish during this year. Jacob will spend the summer in a parish in his home diocese of Wichita before returning to classes at Kenrick-Glennon in the fall. While he helped out on Sunday mornings and was involved with the RCIA process, his main responsibility was in visiting the sick of the parish. Marilyn Price coordinated this activity for which Jacob seems well suited. I ask you to pray for Jacob and all the seminarians preparing for priesthood. MORE THANKS The Trivia Night was a great success and a good fundraiser. I want to thank Dan and Katie Simpson for their leadership, and all who attended or helped out in any way. I also extend thanks to Bernadette Fischer for her leadership in the Festival of Tables event last weekend. Everyone had a great time. While these events raise funds for the parish they are also important times to allow parishioners to get to know one another. We have a steady stream of new parishioners moving into the parish, and those who are already active must reach out to them in friendship and offer Christian hospitality. Fr. So that is where we will begin. Normal Skin: Skin is the largest organ of the body. It does many different things such as: Covering the internal organs and helping protect them from injury Serving as a barrier to germs such as bacteria Preventing the loss of too much water and other fluids Helping control body temperature Protecting the rest of the body from ultraviolet (UV) rays Helping the body make Vitamin D The skin has 3 layers: The epidermis, the dermis and the subcutis. The Epidermis: This top layer of skin is very thin, averaging only about 1/100 of an inch thick. It protects the deeper layers of the skin and the organs of the body from the environment. The main types of cells in the epidermis include: Squamous Cells: These are flat cells in the outer part of the epidermis that are constantly shed as new ones form. Basal Cells: These cells are the lower part of the epidermis, called the basal cell layer. These cells constantly divide to form new cells to replace the squamous cells that wear of the skin’s surface. As these cells move up in the epidermis, they get flatter, eventually becoming squamous cells. Melanocytes: These are the cells that can become melanoma. They make a brown pigment called melanin, which gives the skin its tan or brown color. Melanin protects the deeper layers of the skin from some of the harmful effects of the sun. For most people, when skin is exposed to the sun, melanocytes make more of the pigment, causing the skin to tan or darken. The Basement Membrane: The epidermis is separated from the deeper layers of the skin by the basement membrane. When skin cancer becomes more advanced, it generally grows through this barrier and into the deeper layers. Dermis: This middle layer of the skin is much thicker than the epidermis. It contains hair follicles, sweat glands, blood vessels, and nerves that are held in place by a protein called collagen, which gives the skin its elasticity and strength. Subcutis: The deepest layer of the skin (the subcutis) and the lowest part of the dermis form a network of collagen and fat cells. The subcutis helps the body conserve heat and has a shock-absorbing effect that helps protect the body’s organs from injury.
