turns famous people with two left
feet into pretty decent dancers. Home
renovation reality shows help families
who are in dire straits from poverty or
illness, and give them the dignity and
joy of a renovated home. The Biggest
Loser gives personal trainers to people
who are obese; they work in teams,
support each other, and tell stories of
how their self-respect, gratitude, and
love for their own bodies increases daily.
What is fascinating to us is to see the
miracles of “what was” become “what
can be”, right in front of our eyes. Today,
Jesus reveals the deepest transformation
imaginable: the very cells of our bodies
become transformed when we take
into ourselves the “real food” of Jesus’
body, and the “real drink” of Jesus’
blood. Jesus then abides with us, and we
have his eternal life. At first thought, it’s
unbelievable, isn’t it? But food is our
most basic requirement for life—from
the moment of conception. All creatures
must eat and drink, or die. However, in the case of Jesus, food
is more than mere survival. When we
take in Jesus’ body and blood, we’re not
just “takers”—we become givers. Some
people have a spirituality that is so preoccupied with taking the host, they miss
the transformation into “givers.” We
can’t mess around with this: we do not
dare ask for Jesus in the Eucharist unless
we are ready to do his work in the
world. As one priest said, “If your
Communion only happens in a church,
then it is not Communion with our Lord
Jesus Christ.” Go in peace to love and serve our God!

Novena to St. Anthony
(June 1st – June 13th)
The St. Anthony Group invites all to
join them every day at 1:00 PM until the
celebrations of his Feast Day,
the weekend of July 13th & 14th.
Feast of St. Anthony
Noon Mass, Sunday, June 14th, our Parish
celebrates the Feast of St. Anthony of
Padua. The humble and popular Saint, who
knew how to share his deep knowledge of
God with his listeners and through God’s
grace touched many hearts bringing them to
conversion. After the Noon Mass, we will
bless and distribute Saint Anthony’s Bread,
a reminder to share with the poor our own
poverty and need of God’s love and care.
Baptism Class
The next Baptism class will be this Thursday,
June 11th at 6:30 PM in the St. Gianna Room of
the Pastoral Center. Parents wishing to have their
child baptized and confirmed adults who have been
asked to be a godparent must attend this program,
which is regularly offered by all the parishes.

Background of the Liturgy
Center and culmination of Christian life. Vatican
II states that as a sacrifice “the holy Eucharist is the center and
culmination of Christian life.” Why? 1) Because it enables
us to participate in Christ’s sacrifice as a present reality and
to benefit from its fruits in our own lives. 2) Because it helps
us to worship the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in the most
perfect way. 3) Because it strengthens our charity and unity
with Him and each other in a joint offering of His body and
blood to the Father. 4) Because it gives us a lasting memorial
of Christ’s suffering, death and resurrection, reminding us
of our obligation to make loving sacrifices for others. The
Eucharist is the mystery of our faith, the mystery of our
hope, the mystery of our charity. Why do we celebrate
the Eucharist some 2,000 years later? We do this because
Jesus told us to do so: “Do this in memory of me.” St.
Augustine in the 5th century said it best when he said: “It is
your mystery, the mystery of your life that has been placed
on the altar.” This Holy Memorial is known by various
names: 1) “The Eucharist” because Jesus offered Himself
to God the Father as an act of thanksgiving. 2) “The Lord’s
Supper”--or “Breaking of the Bread”--because we celebrate
it as a meal. 3) “Holy Communion” because, we become
one with Christ by receiving Him. 4) “Holy Mass”(holy
sending), because it gives us a mission: “Go in peace to love
and serve others.”
Jesus
chooses the meal as the sacramental sign
of his union with us. Starvation -- even for a limited time
-- convinces us of how dependent we are on food. Physical
hunger, with its debilitating effects when prolonged, is a vivid
sign of what it is like not to have God in our lives and thus
to be separated, “excommunicated” from the community of
believers. Just as a meal is the perfect relief from hunger,
union with Jesus and the community of believers is the
perfect relief for our spiritual ills. The multiplication of the
loaves described in today’s gospel reminds us to ask Jesus
for our daily bread. In doing so, we express solidarity with
the poor and a desire to receive Christ in the Eucharist. The
Eucharistic meal is the perfect sign of the satisfaction for
which we hunger. This is the reason why a short fast before
communion is retained as a part of the ritual action.
Jesus replaces the Old Covenant with the New
Covenant: Jesus instituted the Eucharist in deliberate
allusion to, and fulfillment of, what happened on Mt.
Sinai. He replaced Moses as the divinely chosen mediator,
establishing the new covenant promised through the prophet
Jeremiah (Jer 31:31-34), by using His own blood rather than
that of sacrificial animals. By sacramentally consuming
the body and blood of the God-Man, we, the final-age
people of God, are interiorly transformed through the most
perfect possible union with the divinity. Jesus creates a
faithful people intimately united with God by means of His
sacramental blood.
The Jewish Passover
is transformed into the
Eucharistic celebration: Jesus instituted the sacrament
of the Holy Eucharist while eating the Passover meal, the
feast on which the Jews gathered annually to commemorate
their ancestors’ deliverance from Egyptian slavery. This
foundational event began the night God “passed over”
the Israelites to punish their oppressors, who resisted His
will. Israel was “saved through blood” of sacrificial lambs
sprinkled on doorways. (There are some modern Bible
scholars who doubt whether Jesus’ Last Supper was strictly a
Passover meal because many items of the Passover meal are
not mentioned). In the second half of today’s Gospel, Jesus’
words and gestures are understood as mediating fullness of
salvation through blood that would be His own. That night
He offered “the blood of the (new) covenant,” blood to be
drunk rather than sprinkled. Moreover, since it was His own,
this blood needed no further identification with the divinity
by splashing against an altar. Finally, the blood was “to be
poured out on behalf of the many (a Semitism for “all”).” Thus, the new and perfect Paschal Lamb accomplished
for people of every nation what Mosaic sacrifices only
imperfectly achieved for the Jews. Giving of both “body” as
well as “blood” establishes the context of Jesus’ sacrificial
death, a new covenant sealed with His blood.
The
sacrament and the sacrifice: Jesus
instituted
the Holy Eucharist during the Last Supper as a sacramental
banquet and a sacrificial offering. As a sacrament, the Holy
Eucharist is an outward sign in and through which we meet
Jesus who shares His life of grace with us. In this Sacrament
of the Eucharist, we do meet Jesus the risen Lord who
comes to us under signs of bread and wine to nourish and
strengthen us for our journey through life. The Eucharistic
Meal is a great mystery because during the Eucharistic
celebration the substance of bread and wine are converted
into Jesus’ body and blood, while their appearances (or
’accidents’) remain. We believe in this transformation of
bread and wine (called Transubstantiation) because Jesus
unequivocally taught it and authorized his apostles to
repeat it. As a sacrament, the Holy Eucharist imparts to
us Jesus’ abiding presence in our souls. We share in His
divine life, which is an assurance of eternal life and the
basis for the conviction that we are children of God the
Father. God shares His life with Jesus and with all other
people. The Eucharist is the sacrament of our union with
Jesus. In this sacrament, Jesus gives his own Body, broken
for us on the cross and his precious Blood poured out for us,
in order that our sins might be forgiven. The Eucharistic
celebration is also a sacrifice because it is the re-presentation
or re-living in an unbloody manner of Christ’s Death on
Good Friday and of His Resurrection on Easter Sunday. By
means of signs, symbols and prayers, we share in Christ’s
passion, death and resurrection made really present for us in
an unbloody manner. This re-presenting, this re-living of the
One Sacrifice of Christ, which is the heart and point of every
Mass, assures us of Jesus’ love for us and of His forgiveness
of our sins. Through this sacrifice, the risen Jesus becomes
present on the altar, offering himself to the Father through
the ministry of the priest.

OSV, who is the printer and mailer of OLR’s
Offertory envelopes, had a slight error with the
June/July envelopes. Some of our parishioners
were sent the correct envelopes, but with the return
address of another parish on the outside envelope.
This confusion has led to some parishioners
discarding their envelopes thinking it was
something else.

To be modestly and tastefully dressed is a sign of respect for God, for our selves, and for others.
It’s a false assumption that God does not care how we dress. Jesus told us “Whatever you do to the least of my brothers,
you do it to me.” If our attire is indecently provocative (short shorts, strapless, backless, spaghetti strap dresses/tops, or
displaying cleavage), displaying unwholesome graphics (skulls, advertisements, scantly clad people) or tattered, it becomes
offensive to our brothers and sisters who are worshipping the Lord and therefore offensive to God’s Majesty.
Ask this question: “Would you dress this way before God?” You are! He sees everything and you are in His house.
