From the Pastor’s Desk
Mesaj ki soti nan biwo Kire-a
Dear Parishioners:
Yesterday (April 18), one hundred and one of our
young parishioners were sealed with the gift of the
Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirmation. We were
pleased to welcome to our parish Monsignor Michael
Walsh to confer the sacrament.
In the past, Confirmation Day made many young
people anxious. Memorizing the responses to many
questions was paramount and there was the added
fear that one would be called to answer a question
before the bishop and the congregation. Times have
certainly changed. But the sacrament’s meaning and
serious preparation for its reception have not. Our
parish program provides for regular doctrinal
formation through regular classes, a retreat
experience, sponsor involvement, writing reflection
papers on the life of a candidate’s saint, and a
personal interview with the clergy or catechist, as well
as undertaking works of charity and service.
I am grateful to Mrs. Francis and all our catechists
who helped prepare our newly confirmed. I am
grateful to the parents and sponsors of the newly
confirmed who by their love, prayers and sacrifices
brought them to this important day. We pray that
every young man and women anointed with sacred
Chrism will remain faithful to the Lord. The Catechism
of the Catholic Church reminds us that Confirmation…
• Brings us an increase and deepening of
baptismal grace
• Roots us more deeply in the divine filiation
• Unites us more firmly in Christ
• Increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us
• Renders our bond with the Church more perfect
• Gives us strength to spread and defend the
Faith boldly
In our congratulations to the newly confirmed let us
implore the Holy Spirit to renew His gifts within us.
May his “fruits” be seen in our daily lives: love, joy,
peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustfulness,
gentleness and self control.
With affection,
Msgr. Gervasio

The Celebration of Mass
with the
Anointing of the Sick
7:00 p.m.
Tuesday, April 28
Our Lady of Sorrows Church
By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of
the priests, the whole Church commends those who
are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may
raise them up and save them.” (CCC 1499)
We would like to expand membership of our parish
School Board. A Catholic school board in the Diocese
of Trenton is an advisory body of delegated
responsibility. It seeks to:
• Develop a school’s long range strategic plan
• Establish annual goals and objectives
• Establish realistic enrollment goals
• Adopt and monitor the annual budget
• Review policies and procedures
• Address facility needs
• Promote marketing and public relations
A member would commit to a monthly meeting. A
member should:
• Be a practicing Catholic
• Possess a genuine interest in Catholic
education
• Be a team player
• Be committed to the mission of the parish and
school
Please give prayerful consideration to this invitation. If
you feel the Lord is asking you to serve in this
capacity,
please
contact
Msgr.
Gervasio.
([email protected]).
Who may receive this sacrament?
Those awaiting a surgery of a serious nature.
The elderly who are notably weakened, even if not
seriously ill.
Sick children may be strengthened through this
anointing.
Our parish invites all those Catholics who may be ill to
this sacred encounter that they might know that
Christ, who often visited and healed the sick, loves
them in their illness.
Children's Liturgy of the Word
The last Children's Liturgy for this school year will be
on May 3. Many thanks to all the wonderful children
who came to pray and hear God's Word this year, and
to our Children's Liturgy team: Joan Bellis, Josephine
Crivelli, Joe DiLiberto, Bill Franko, Anne Kantor,
Lorraine Kostinas, Marianne Peluso, Magali Santos,
and Carolyn Schindewolf.
Parish May Crowning
Please join us on Sunday, May 17, at our parish’s
annual May Crowning. Following the
11:00 a.m. Mass at Our Lady of
Sorrows Church, we will process to
our Blessed Mother Shrine in front of
our school. All First Communicants
are invited to participate in their First
Communion attire. Please let your
teacher know if you plan to join us.
We look forward to seeing all First Communicants,
their families, and all parishioners.

annual Tootsie Roll Drive
for
God's
Special
Children next weekend
(April 25-26) at both Our
Lady of Sorrows and St.
Anthony churches.
It's a great feeling to arrive home! We have all felt
the feelings of warmth and love as we have arrived at
our home after a long time away. Well, the warmth
and love was felt most strongly this week as national
bestselling author Edward Bloor visited our parish
school. Mr. Bloor attended our school Mass and
Grade 7 ring ceremony on Friday, April 17.
What a great time to return to Our Lady of
Sorrows School! Mr. Bloor, a graduate of our parish
school, joined the children and warmly recalled his
days at Mass at our parish church. This once Seventh
Grader is now a bestselling author of novels for young
adults, best known for Tangerine and London Calling.
He is the son of Edward William and Mary (Cowley)
Bloor, parishioners of Our Lady of Sorrows-St.
Anthony. Mr. Bloor is a novelist and editor as well as
a former English teacher in Florida. He currently
works as a senior editor for Harcourt Brace School
Publishers. After Mass he met informally with the
children before enjoying a tour of his former school!
Act of Faith, Works of Love
Thanks to all who returned their 2015 Annual Catholic
Appeal pledge cards, our parish is now 52% of the way
to its goal! If you are one of the 303 who made a pledge
or a one-time donation, thank you! If, however, you
wanted a little time to prayerfully consider pledging, but
mislaid your pledge card or haven’t yet returned it,
please take this opportunity to do so. Your Act of Faith
that will facilitate Works of Love. And when we exceed
our goal, money returns to our parish!
Drop your gift in our regular collection and mark the
envelope “Annual Catholic Appeal.” (Please make
checks payable to the Annual Catholic Appeal, not to
OLS-SA.) We'll gladly forward your gift to the diocese.
Friday, was a most busy day for Our Lady of
Sorrows students. Our Seventh Grade students
planned the school Mass and then proudly received
their rings marking their connection to our school.
Monsignor Gervasio blessed the rings and then
congratulated each of our young adults. Best wishes
Seventh Graders! Wear your ring with pride! You
have joined a very special group of people. Many
thanks to Mrs. Tuohy, Grade Seven teacher for her
time and dedication to this very special event.

call the rectory office. (If you're calling for someone
else, kindly make sure you have their permission.)
Please note that names will be removed from the
published prayer list after 12 weeks unless other
arrangements have been made.
A special recognition and blessing is also
extended to our Grade 8 students who were
confirmed on Saturday morning. This week was a
very exciting time for them as the final practices were
focused upon the confirmation ceremony. The
children have worked with their teachers, Mrs. Emde
and Mr. Prendergast, as they have prepared for this
moment in their lives. The children proudly walked
their list of confirmation names to the church office. A
bit of pre-confirmation excitement was shared as the
students joined together for a light breakfast before
our school Mass. Good bless our newly confirmed!
Time's Growing Short!
Don't forget to order your tickets for the fabulously funny
Late Nite Catechism show. This is part catechism class,
part stand-up routine, and one of the longest running
shows in U.S. theater history. You, the audience
member, are part of Sister’s class. She’ll take you back
to the days of the Latin Mass and meatless Fridays, and
remind you about that good old ruler across the
knuckles! See page 12 for details and an order form.

OLS PTA Seeking Donations
Religious Education News
Save the date! The OLS PTA’s 5th Annual Knight to
Remember is scheduled for Friday, October 9!
This is a tricky tray style event and through the
generous donations of our school families,
parishioners, and the community at large, we were
able to assemble
more than 230 gift
baskets to raffle off
last
year.
All
proceeds from this
event benefit the
students of Our Lady
of Sorrows School.
We are in need of your help once again! Have you
come across items in your closet that you purchased
for gifts but never gave out? Did you get a gift that
you wanted to exchange but never got back to the
store? Why not donate it to our event? We are looking
for new and unused items as well as baskets or
containers (i.e., hat boxes, photo boxes, totes, etc.) to
help create these wonderful gift baskets once again.
Unfortunately, due to the nature of the event we
cannot accept clothing or “gently used” items.
Donations can be dropped off at school’s main office
between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Simply label the
donation “KTR.” Please do not drop off donations at
the Parish Office. If you have a question or would like
further information, please contact Liz Landi (6318033 or [email protected]).
Religious Education Registration
It is time to register your children for Religious
Education classes for the 2015-2016 school year.
Please remember that certain sessions fill up quickly
so early registration is highly recommended. We can
more easily accommodate your preference if you
register promptly. We have a special offer for the
early registration. Please check the letter that we
mailed with the registration forms. If you haven't
received it yet, please call us.
For your convenience, all registration forms also are
available on the OLS-SA website (www.ols-sa.org).
You may print the registration form and mail or bring it
to the Religious Education Office. If you have a Pre-K
or Kindergarten student entering Religious Education
classes, please print the registration form from the
website or call our office to register your child.
Sunday and Summer Developments
Sunday sessions are now available for students in
Grades 7 and 8.
A Summer Program is now offered as an alternative
to regular year-round classes! See below for details.
Attention all Parents whose children are attending
Trenton Catholic Academy. If your child is in 2nd
grade or 7th grade, please make sure that you register
your child for sacramental preparation.

Religious Education
Seniors’ Activities
The Summer Program is offered to our parishioners
as an alternative to the traditional once a week class
format that is held from September through May. It
will be held:
Monday –Friday
July 20-24 & July 27-31
9:00 a.m. -Noon
Senior Club #1
Next meeting: Wed, May 13
1 p.m.; St Anthony Hall
Senior Club #2
Next meetings: Tues, May 5 & 19 and June 2 & 16
1:00 p.m.; Church Meeting Room
The Summer Program seeks to accommodate the
busy schedules of our families by eliminating the
weekly “shuttling” of children to the parish campus
from September through May. Class time is the same
as the regular program but condensed into a twoweek period. his “intensive” plan provides for a more
focused approach and retention of the subject matter.
Students will stay “connected” to the parish
throughout the year through weekly Mass and by
attending 3 catechetical sessions during the Advent,
Lent, & Easter Seasons. Parental involvement is
expected.
It is open to students of Grades 3 -6.
For information & registration forms, please call
Mrs. Francis at 587-4372.
There will be changes for future Atlantic City trips.
Information will be announced soon. Please call
Doreen (706-6169) if interested in going on the trips.
Our Seniors Clubs welcome new members! You do
not have to be a parishioner to join.

Saturday, April 25

highlighted moments on the Christian journey to help
participants come to a deeper understanding of our need
for these rituals through which we can experience the

Foundations for Ministry
Nourishing a “Love of Prayer” in Ministry
Saturday, May 2
Presenter: Dianne Traflet
This workshop will look at the meaning and importance
of prayer and Christian spirituality-in-action, from the
lens of prominent Catholics of the twentieth century,
including Blessed John Paul II, St. Edith Stein, and
Dorothy Day. What do their prayer lives – in the midst of
busy workdays – teach us about the foundations of
ministry? How can we deepen our relationship with God
and progress on our spiritual journeys as we serve in
and for the Church today?
Upcoming Bus Trips
Happy Days will run bus trips to
Atlantic City on May 6 and June 3.
The price is $35. Interested parties
can call Madelyn at 586-4549. If
there are changes on the trips, you
will be notified.
Foundations for Ministry
Evangelization
Saturday, May 30
Presenter: Andres Arango
In this workshop, evangelization will be explained from
the perspective of the Gospel mandate, the teachings of
the Church and the current call for a New
Evangelization, with a particular emphasis on the role of
the initial proclamation, the kerygma, in this mission.
Is God Calling You?
If you are a faithful, single, Roman Catholic man,
between the ages of 18 and 40, and you are asking
yourself whether God is calling you to be a priest, you
are cordially invited to attend this month’s discernment
meeting on Sunday, April 26, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the
Church of Saint Benedict at 165 Bethany Road, Holmdel,
New Jersey. Join Very Rev. Dan Swift as he shares in
his ministry of the priesthood, followed by great
fellowship, and conclude with a meal.
Please register with Diocese of Trenton Vocation Office
at [email protected] or by calling 4067449. Join us at this exciting time as you discover this
awesome way of serving the Lord and respond to His
invitation! We look forward to seeing you!
