He studied applied mathematics at Harvard University and the University of Cambridge before attending Stanford University where he completed medical school and a PhD in neurosciences. He completed his psychiatry residency at Stanford, where he began using new, light-based technologies to study how brain rhythms are generated and how they might contribute to brain function. Dr. Sohal has been at the University of California - San Francisco since 2010, where he is a Staglin Family/IMHRO Assistant Professor of Psychiatry. He leads a laboratory that studies how circuits in the brain process information, and how alterations in this process contribute to neuropsychiatric disorders. He also continues to see psychiatric outpatients for approximately one half-day each week. ABOUT ONE MIND One Mind is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and supporting brain health through fostering fundamental changes that will radically accelerate the development and implementation of improved diagnostics and treatments, while eliminating the stigma. From autism to Alzheimer’s disease to traumatic brain injury and posttraumatic stress, brain diseases and injuries affect more than one in five Americans in a given year. Unless immediate action is taken, the burden is expected to escalate and become an unmanageable threat to public health. One Mind Philly is the first regional effort of One Mind and is run completely by volunteers.
