Kaplan Open Learning (KOL) delivers online degree courses for the University of Essex under the brand
name University of Essex Online. The University and Kaplan have been working together since 2007 to offer
high quality online courses.
University of Essex Online offers undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses online to both UK and
international students that enable them to benefit from a flexible approach to study. Our structured distance
learning courses allow students to work towards their degree in a unique virtual learning environment and
still have access to all the support and facilities they would expect to receive on campus.

The role
This is a new role which has been created due to continued growth in student numbers. The purpose of this
role is to deliver highly effective modules to online learners within one of the specialist subject areas listed
below and contribute to the teaching of other modules as appropriate.

Main responsibilities
Based in Leeds and reporting to the Head of Business and Technology, the Subject Tutor will be responsible
for the following:








Tutoring modules on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in their specialist subject area
plus occasional tutoring on Fundamentals of Effective Learning (FEL) modules.
Preparing assessments for modules (formative and summative), marking and providing feedback to
students
Providing, when required, academic leadership, management and coordination for a designated
number of modules in the role of “Module Co-ordinator”; this includes:
o preparing and updating module-related information for an agreed suite of modules,
o leading and coordinating module teaching teams, where appropriate
Reviewing and assisting with updating module material; new module content creation as required
Implementing quality assurance procedures at module level and contributing to the annual
monitoring and review of modules and programmes
Maintaining an accurate and up-to-date record of student performance
Assisting with the production of reports for students studying on relevant modules
Providing, when required, academic learning support to designated students



Working with the Admissions and Student Support teams in the delivery of induction programmes to
new students
Participating in regular meetings with academic and student support staff and representing KOL on
internal/external committees and boards as and when required
Any other duties as required from time to time by the Department Head
Candidate profile









You will have a passion for helping students to succeed, be customer orientated and performance
driven. In addition you will have:
A Masters degree in business or a related subject area
Significant business-related teaching or training experience within a UK Further/ Higher Education or
a commercial setting
Ability to develop and update teaching material
Fluent spoken and written English
Competence in teaching and administrative IT skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, e-mail, etc.)
Strong record-keeping skills
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbally and in writing
Flexibility and willingness to work under pressure to deadlines
In addition it would be desirable for applicants to have:




A teaching qualification such as PGCE, PGHE or equivalent
Experience of contributing towards the development of and working with, a Virtual Learning
Environment
Experience of working with some, or all, of the following student groups;
o mature students
o international students
o part-time learners
