It's Our Favorite Time!
Dear South Jersey Tournament Anglers,
It’s 2015 and the blowing snow and cold is behind us and it’s
time to go fishing! Time for the warmth of summer and enjoying
the sport we love here on the cape. Who isn’t ready for some fun
and memorable times?
We’ll kick off this year with the 7th Annual Strictly Boaters
Boat Show at South Jersey Marina, May 1st - 3rd. No, it’s not a
tournament but it’s a show all about boats and boaters in the truest
sense. Strictly Boaters is a smaller, niche show that only invites
boat manufacturers and dealers, boating related equipment and
service vendors, and of course boaters to the show! You will find
new and used boats of all types, in the water and out, and exhibitors of equipment and services pertinent to boating. You will not
find long lines, bounce houses, the knife guy or water-skiing squirrels! Complimentary tickets are available from exhibiting dealers,
a NJ West Marine store or simply cut out one of our complimentary admission ads in “The Salty Dog”, “The Boat Shopper”,
“The Fisherman” or “On The Water” magazines. Complimentary
admission is also available to all boaters by simply presenting a
boating license, tow membership card or other boating documentation. Please go to StrictlyBoaters.com for more info.
The competitive fishing season gets underway June 10th
through 13th with our 35th Annual Shark Tournament. Last
year the tournament went to a Fish 2 of 3 days, Captain’s Choice
format with no weather committee where you decide what days
to fish! It was overwhelmingly welcomed and will continue going
forward. Last year we had a record payout of $323,273 and the
Heaviest Mako left the awards ceremony with a record check for
$196,454! We are often referred to as the “Big One,” the “Cape
May Shark Tournament” or even the “New Jersey Shark Tournament”, but make no mistake, we are historically the richest shark
fishing event in New Jersey and the one in which to compete if
you like high stakes, lots of fun and the camaraderie that tournament fishing breeds! It truly is the premier event for shark anglers!
We are pleased to announce a new tournament that we think
will be lots of fun for all involved; The Canyon Club Junior
Angler Offshore Challenge! Taking place July 8th-11th, this
event is strictly for Junior Anglers! Make no mistake, this will
be a serious competition for anglers, girls and boys, 17 years old
and under. There will be two divisions; 12 and under and 13 to
17. You will be permitted to fish two of the available three days,
Captain’s Choice, no weather committee. There are lay day forms,
catch reports and comprehensive rules just like every other tournament we do. It’s on the schedule, plans are being finalized and
interest is high. This is a perfect opportunity for your kids to test
their angling skills with others in their age group. Most importantly, it’s going to be fun and it’s going to be for them!
Next on the schedule is the very popular Viking/Ocean Showdown taking place July 15th through the 19th. That’s right! It is
now a week later than the past 25 years and doesn’t conflict with
anything! This relaxing and fun event is open to Viking Yacht and
Ocean Yacht owners (If you’re not an owner, jump on your neighbors Viking or Ocean and help them win!) and is an annual battle
for bragging rights between the two manufacturers and their boat
owners. Definitely an affair for family and friends, the Showdown
is a two-day fish format (billfish release) with a scheduled lay-day
pool party and dockside festivities at night. There are usually factory
demo boats, factory personnel and many of their vendors onsite,
so there is always much to see and talk about. If you’re interested,
simply give us a call at (609) 884-2400 and we’ll get you a spot on
your respective team. And remember, no pressure, right?
The Stone Harbor Yacht Club Marlin Invitational will take
place July 23rd - 26th. The tournament directors, Jamie Diller
(609-827-0020) and Tom Byrne (609-425-1137), want to expand this
great event and its rich heritage and asked us to lend a hand. They
have been hosting the tournament at Canyon Club Marina for the
past several years and it's a very nice event. This is a fish two days,
billfish release format with a delicious captain’s meeting and awards
dinner held at the exclusive Stone Harbor Yacht Club. For more
information, simply give Jamie or Tom a call at the above numbers
and they’ll fill you in on the details. If you’re a marlin fisherman,
you don’t want to miss this prestigious affair!
The month of August brings the best marlin fishing to our waters
and also one of the most respected, lucrative and fun tournaments in
the world, The MidAtlantic! Taking place August 16th - 21st. This
event is known for its great fishing, hospitality and camaraderie.
The MidAtlantic is considered a must attend event for competitive
billfishing and tuna anglers. In its 24th year, the tournament is a fish
3 of an available 5 days, Captain’s Choice format, fished from Cape
May, NJ or Ocean City, MD with lots of dockside fanfare, a multitude of sponsors and most importantly, numerous ways to win!
Last year we instituted some changes in the entry fee and Calcutta
and resulted in 21 winners splitting a MidAtlantic record purse of
$2,412,510! This year the addition of a half hour of morning fishing
time and an hour earlier departure time will surely make the 2015
MidAtlantic the best ever! If you’re planning on doing some competitive fishing this year, we hope this is the event you’ll choose. We
believe it’s the best bang for your tournament buck, and we know
your family, friends and crew will have a great time creating exciting and lasting memories.
It is indeed time to go fishing and we hope you, your family
and friends will put one or all of our exciting events on your 2015
calendar. If you need help in planning, simply give us a call and it
will be our pleasure to do whatever we can to help you have a fun,
memorable and hassle-free time.
Sincerely,
Bob Glover, Tournament Director

AND DON’T FORGET MARLIN MONTH!
If you love chasing whites, why not make plans to join us
at Canyon Club Resort Marina this year for Marlin Month.
Canyon Club is the center of excitement and the hub for
white marlin fishermen when the bite turns on. In fact, it’s become the regions center of big game fishing, all season long!
What is Marlin Month? Six years ago we put together a
fun, month-long, release event exclusively for boats docked
at Canyon Club, and called it Marlin Month. Solely for having fun and seeing who could catch the most, it ran from the
first fish day of The MidAtlantic, through the third week in
September. When it was all over, the 14 participating boats
fished a total of 71 days and released an amazing 605 whites
and 6 blues. It was most likely the best white marlin fishing
our area has ever seen. It was an absolute blast!
Will we be doing it again in 2015? You bet! And you are
invited to join in the fun. Marlin Month will begin this year
on August 17th and will run through September 27th. So,
before you make up your mind about next summer’s fishing plans, consider joining the fleet at Canyon Club for our
2015 Marlin Month (if you’re fishing The MidAtlantic, you’ll
already be here!). We’ll be making memories with friends
and family, experiencing world class fishing and enjoying the
good times that go with it.
Simply contact Paul or Mike through the Canyon Club
Ships Store to extend your reservation from the Mid-Atlantic
through the September mayhem - it’s truly world class!
The annual South Jersey Shark Tournament is the first competitive big-game fishing opportunity of
the season. Averaging 150 to 200 boats each year, this event is the premiere Shark Tournament in the
Mid-Atlantic region. With a cast of over 1,000 anglers participating annually, this exciting event takes
place when the bite has been historically at its best in our productive waters off of Cape May. Our shark
tournament is structured to provide participants with the best possible fishing hours, lucrative cash prizes
and an equal chance for boats of all sizes to compete – all while setting an example of sportsmanship
and sound conservation practices.
Last year, by popular demand, we went to a Captains’ Choice, fish 2 days out of 3 days format, no
weather committee. The Captains’ meeting will be held on Wednesday evening, 6/10/15 and Thursday,
Friday and Saturday will be the available fish days.
The entry fee is $575 per boat which provides eligibility for tournament prizes and five tickets to all
dockside dinners and festivities (additional tickets can be purchased at the Captains’ meeting). All of
the festivities, from Captain’s Meeting to Awards Party will take place at South Jersey Marina. We’ll
have the big tent, great food and everything else you’ve come to expect at this event. We’ll even have a
shuttle van running between South Jersey and Canyon Club for remote parking. It’s going to be a typical
South Jersey good time! Guaranteed!
Depending on the number of entries, prize money will most likely top the 300K mark again this year!
If you enjoy competitive shark fishing, dockside parties and the camaraderie inherent in this sport, there
is no better opportunity to enjoy yourself with family and friends than the South Jersey Shark Tournament. If you need transient dockage, be sure to make your reservations early to guarantee yourself a spot
at South Jersey Marina (South Jersey will likely fill up first) or Canyon Club Resort.

Tournament Rules & Regulations
1 Registration is by boat rather than by angler. The Tournament Directors reserve the right to
decline the entry of any boat or crew.
2 All boats must sail from and return to Cape May Inlet, except that boats with no fish to be
weighed may return to home port after the last day of fishing.
3 Boundaries for the tournament will be 60 nautical miles from the Cape May Sea Buoy.
4 There are three (3) available fishing days for the tournament. Fishing days for boats entered will
be any two (2) of the available three (3) days, captains’ choice; no weather committee. The crew
members of each individual boat will be solely responsible for the decision as to which days to
fish. South Jersey Shark Tournament assumes no liability or responsibility for any damage or loss.
5 Each boat must pick one NON-FISHING DAY by submitting the official Lay Day Form prior to 11:00
AM on the day selected. Said forms must be physically delivered by a member of the boat’s crew
to the dockmaster’s office at South Jersey Marina or Canyon Club Resort Marina. The boat must be
dockside when the lay day is declared. Any boat not submitting the proper form by the 11:00 AM
deadline will be automatically assumed to be fishing on that day. Boats may not fish on a lay day
unless all of their available fish days have been used. Boats with mechanical problems or other
emergencies may use lay days to arrive late to the tournament so long as it is with the advance
permission of the Tournament Directors and they conform with all other rules.
6 Boats are not permitted to clear the Cape May Sea Buoy prior to 6:00 AM.
7 No lines or bait of any kind, including chum, may be put into the water until starting time is
announced by a Committee Boat. Starting time is 8:30 AM.
8 Moves during the day should be accomplished with care for established slicks. Boats passing
through competitors’ slicks within 300 yards may be subject to disqualification.
9 Participants shall comply with I.G.F.A. equipment and angling rules with the following exceptions: A) Fish may be dispatched by gun or bangstick after they have been wired; B) No harpoons,
dart gaffs or greensticks; C) A fish may be hooked by someone other than the angler provided the
rod is immediately transferred to the angler after hook-up, from that time on the angler must
fight the fish alone until boated or released. The Tournament Directors retain sole authority for interpreting and implementing the I.G.F.A.’s rules. (The use of mammal blood or flesh is prohibited.)
10 No more than 5 lines may be fished from any boat, regardless of number of anglers.
11 Only one day need be fished for the tournament to be considered official & prizes to be awarded.
12 All fish boated or released must be reported to a committee boat at the time of the catch.
13 For release purposes, a fish will be considered caught when the mate grabs the leader or the
swivel touches the tip of the rod.
14 Fishing ends at 3:30 PM on each fishing day. Any fish hooked prior to the deadline may be played
until boated or released, provided that said fish is reported hooked (to a committee boat) before
the deadline.
15 All eligible fish must be available for weigh-in at South Jersey Marina by 7:30 PM aboard the boat
on which they were caught. Fractional weights will be rounded to the nearest pound. Weigh-in
begins at 2:30 PM.
16 For release points to count, boats must be dockside by the weigh-in deadline and submit a Daily
Catch Report by 8:00 PM.
17 In the event of a tie in the point categories, the winner shall be the first boat reaching the winning point accumulation.
18 In the event of a tie in the cash prize categories, the prize money will be equally divided between
those tying.
19 In the event that less than three (3) qualifying fish are taken in any category, the unwon prize
money will be proportionally divided among the winners in that category. In the event that any
Tournament Prize category is not won at all, that prize money will be equally divided among the
winners of the other categories with the exception of the prize money for daily heaviest Mako.
20 In the event that no qualifying Mako is caught on a particular day, the tournament prize money for
Daily Heaviest Mako will be equally divided among the Daily Heaviest Mako winners on the remaining days. If there are no qualifying makos caught, the tournament prize money for Daily Heaviest
Mako will go to heaviest shark.
21 In the event of boat disability, contestants may transfer to another boat not entered in the tournament and may fish in the name of the original, with prior approval of the Tournament Directors.
22 Anglers may not switch to another boat nor can anyone from another boat come aboard to assist
in fighting or boating a fish.
23 For the purpose of identification, a porbeagle will be considered a mako.
24 In order to be eligible for awards, prizes, and calcuttas, fish must be caught in compliance with all
tournament rules. Said rules include conformance to state and federal size limits and possession
of a current NMFS angling, general or charter/headboat category HMS permit.
25 All fish eligible for cash prizes may be subject to examination by the Tournament Directors, consulting biologists and/or Torrymeter, should there be any question as to the “freshness” of the catch.
It shall be the responsibility of the participant to keep all eligible catches in suitable and proper
condition until weigh-in. In the event of any disputes arising from such examination, the decision of
the Tournament Directors shall be final. Polygraph examination may be required of winning crews.
26 Allegations of violations of any of the above rules may be submitted only by an official tournament registrant and must be submitted in writing on the day of the alleged infrac¬tion. In the
event of such an allegation, the tournament directors will have the sole and exclusive responsibility to investigate the alleged incident and to rule as to whether any violation materially aided the
angler, crew, or vessel, or otherwise affected the outcome of the tournament. Any subsequent
penalty will be solely at the discretion of the tournament directors and shall be final. In all cases,
registrant and their crews agree to be bound by the ruling of the tournament directors.

SOUTH JERSEY TOURNAMENTS
A LOT MORE THAN JUST GREAT FISHING!
Welcome to our First Annual Canyon Club Junior Angler Offshore Challenge. The purpose of the
CCJAOC is to help young anglers experience the fun, excitement and sportsmanship of offshore fishing.
The first of its kind for the Cape May area, this tournament encourages those of us that regularly fish the
bountiful and productive waters right off our coast, an opportunity to not only ply offshore for an early
season catch, but give our junior anglers a chance to be recognized for their catches and test their skills at
hooking, fighting and landing (or releasing) prized fish.
This is an offshore tournament for boys and girls aged 17 and younger. The event will be divided into
two age groups: 12 and under, and 13 to 17. The entry fee is $400.00 and covers up to (4) junior anglers
per boat. Additional junior anglers will be $100.00 each. Multiple awards for Blue Marlin, White Marlin,
Tuna & Dolphin will be handed out. There will also be a Best Offshore Photo Contest for those not grabbing a rod.
We plan on having fun dockside, but make no mistake; this is a serious tournament for Junior Anglers
and will be recognized as a premier event, rivaling others such as the Viking/Ocean Showdown, the Yacht
Club of Stone Harbor Invitational and the MidAtlantic. This will be a fish two out of three day tournament,
Captains Choice, no weather committee. There are lay day forms, catch reports
and comprehensive rules just like the other tournaments mentioned.
The Captains’ Meeting along with other evening events will be
held poolside at the Canyon Club Resort Marina. Our Wednesday
evening Captains Meeting will feature Junior Angler Signups and light refreshments. Thursday night will be spend
time with your family night, and Friday Night at dusk
will be Movie Night. Saturday night, we will have a
barbecue with hamburgers and hot dogs along with
all the fixin’s followed by the awards presentations.
It’s on the 2015 Summer SJM/CCRM Fishing
Tournament Schedule, plans are being finalized
and interest has been very high at all of the winter boat shows. So, moms and dads, grandparents,
uncles and friends, plan your vacation (for YOUR
Junior Anglers) to spend a few quality days on the
water, sharing, teaching, coaching and encouraging
our future sportsmen and women the fun of offshore
fishing.

TOURNAMENT RULES
1. The purpose of The Canyon Club Junior Anglers Offshore Challenge is to help young anglers experience the fun, excitement and sportsmanship of offshore fishing. Species to be recognized for this event are white marlin & blue marlin
(releases), tuna and dolphin.
2. All boats must sail from and return to Cape May Inlet, except boats with no fish to weigh may return to their home ports
and respective marinas after their last day of fishing. But be sure to come back to CCRM poolside for any and all events
related to the tournament. You surely don’t want to miss anything!
3. Boats may clear the Cape May Inlet at a time of their discretion, but must fish within 100 nautical miles of the 2CM Sea
Buoy. No lines of any kind may be put in the water until the starting time is announced by a committee boat. Starting
time is 8:30 AM.
4. There are three (3) available fish days for this tournament. Fishing days for boats entered will be any two (2) of the available three (3) days, Captains’ Choice; no weather committee. The crew members (or Junior Anglers) of each boat will
be solely responsible for the decisions as to which days to fish. The Canyon Club Junior Angler Offshore Challenge or
associated directors assumes no liability or responsibility for any damage or loss.
5. Each boat must pick one NON-FISHING DAY by submitting the official LAY DAY FORM. Said forms must be physically delivered by a Junior Angler representing the boats crew to the Dockmaster’s office at the Canyon Club Marina.
The boat must be dockside when the lay day is declared. Any boat not submitting the proper form will be automatically
assumed to be fishing on that day.
6. Maximum lines in the water at any given time, including teasers will be eight (8).
7. All billfish released must be reported to a committee boat when caught, giving the boat number and anglers name. The
committee boat will respond and give time of catch. All tuna and dolphin boated should be brought to the scale by the
Junior Angler for weigh-in and photo opportunity.
8. Participants shall comply with I.G.F.A equipment and angling rules.
9. A fish can be hooked by a family member or guardian representing the Junior Angler. However, paid crew member(s)
may NOT hook the fish or handle the rod at any time. The rod shall be immediately transferred to the angler after hookup. From then on, the angler shall fight the fish un-assisted.
10. In order to promote full participation, an additional 50 point Junior Angler incentive will be awarded to the angler(s) who
hook their own fish and fight to completion. Coaching is permitted and encouraged.
11. The Tournament Directors retain sole authority for interpreting and implementing the I.G.F.A rules.
12. This is a trolling tournament, but hook-ups accomplished with no headway are permissible if they occur anytime when
bait settles when fighting another fish. The use of live bait or stopping and casting to fish balling bait is not permissible.
13. For release purposes, a fish will be considered caught when a crew member grabs the leader or the swivel touches the rod
tip. Any fish hooked prior to the deadline may be played until boated or released, provided that the hook-up was confirmed by a committee boat before the deadline.
14. Fishing ends at 3:00 PM.
15. All eligible fish must be available for weigh-in at the Canyon Club Marina by 8:00 PM. All fish when brought to the
weigh-in station, will be accompanied by the Junior Angler for a photo opportunity. Weigh-in begins at 5:00 PM.
16. For release points to count, boats must be dockside by the weigh-in deadline & submit a daily catch report to the Dockmasters office. Special recognition will be made at the awards presentation for “best-photo” of the released billfish documented on the catch report, but are not required. Photo’s will be judged by a panel of photo enthusiasts separate from the
tournament directors, be featured on the Canyon Club Marina Facebook page, entered into our weekly photo contest and
eligible for our Grand Prize at the end of the season.
17. Only one day need be fished for the tournament to be considered official and prizes to be awarded.
18. In the event of a boat disability, contestants may transfer to another boat not entered in the tournament and may fish in

nurture our offshore junior anglers in ways to preserve the sport for future generations.
26th Annual
The 26th Annual Viking/Ocean Showdown (July 15-20, 2015) is a great opportunity to get together with
like-minded owners, members of each manufacturer’s family, and their factory representatives for four days
of fishing and fun. These two giants in the world of sportfishing build their boats a mere 30 minutes from
each other here in southern New Jersey, and that makes for a natural and entertaining rivalry. It is all about
good natured competition, camaraderie and enjoying our sport. And truth be told, it is probably the most fun
and ‘stress-less’ of all of our events! There’ll be plenty of time to relax, enjoy nightly dinners, cocktail parties and other fun dockside activities – all in true South Jersey Tournament style.
Besides the fun, this event will determine annual
Brag’n Rights for the winning team and we know
how important that can be! Even the dock talk and
one-up-manship is worth the price of admission!
This past year, the perpetual Showdown Trophy
adorned the offices of Viking Yachts as they edged
out Ocean in 2014 in what was a ferocious billfish
battle to the end! Team Ocean’s leader John Leek
IV says “they caught a lucky break!” But according
to Viking’s Pat Healey “we came, we caught and we
conquered! Any early bets on 2015?
If you would like to fish a fun and prestigious
offshore event, then please come and be a part of
the 26th Annual Viking/Ocean Showdown and treat
your family and friends to a few days of great fishing, great times and a really nice affair. You’ll see
old friends, make new ones and get a chance to chat
with the factory folks and their vendors.
To be a member of the Viking or Ocean Team,

All of us at Viking Yachts, Ocean Yachts, South Jersey and Canyon Club

Started back in 1992, the “Mother of All
Marlin Tournaments” as it was called, posted
an unprecedented upfront prize of $500,000.
Calcutta entries that first year put the total
purse over $1,000,000, making the Mid-Atlantic
the first bona fide million dollar billfishing contest.
NEW LAST YEAR
More ways to win and the opportunity for even bigger prize money!
It has always been our goal to offer competitive anglers an exclusive
event that is second to none in the way of fun, camaraderie and “big
dollar” prizes. We thought the best way of making the MidAtlantic
better than ever was to simply ask. So, last year we talked to numerous
participants, past and present, and listened to their input and ideas. The
overwhelming things we heard were; more ways to win, and the opportunity to compete for even bigger prize money.
Last year we announced some changes regarding the entry and prize structure
of the event that will preserve the exclusive character of the tournament while
making it accessible to more competitors, give participants more ways to win,
and make the payouts much more lucrative.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE RECENT CHANGES
• The entry fee has been reduced to $2,500 from $6,000. This is the
requisite price for admission into the event and covers the costs for a crew
of six for all functions, dinners, drinks, entertainment, etc. for the week.
This essentially splits the hospitality and other tournament costs out from
the prize money which will now be derived strictly from calcutta entries.
This will give participants more options in how they wish to compete and
not limit prize money by the amount of boats fishing.
• There are now more choices available to enter for less cost. If you
choose, you can participate and win cash prizes for as little as $4500.
• On the opposite end, there are now more choices to compete for the
biggest prize money. Naturally, the more you’re in, the more you win!
• Two of the new calcuttas are Tuna oriented; The Tuna, Dolphin and
Wahoo Calcutta and the Tuna Pro Jackpot. $5,500 of new Tuna Calcuttas mean big money tuna payouts!
• New Blue Marlin Pro Jackpot Calcutta – Winner take all!
• All of the Overall Calcuttas still have White Marlin, Blue Marlin and
Tuna components.
• Most importantly…The MidAtlantic is still the same great event as
always, only with more ways to win and bigger purses than ever before!
It’s going to be another great year. Hope you can join us!

23 For the purpose of release points only, sailfish &
longbill spearfish will be considered white marlin.
24 In order to be eligible for awards and calcuttas, fish
must be caught in compliance with all tournament
rules. Said rules include conformance to state and
federal size limits and possession of a current NMFS
angling, general or charter/headboat category HMS
permit.
25 All fish eligible for cash prizes may be subject to
examination by the Tournament Directors, consulting
biologists and/or Torrymeter, should there be any
question as to the “freshness” of the catch. It shall
be the responsibility of the participant to keep all
eligible catches in suitable and proper condition until
weigh-in. In the event of any disputes arising from
such examination, the decision of the Tournament
Directors shall be final. Polygraph examination may
be required of winning crews.
26 Allegations of violations of any of the above rules
may be submitted only by an official tournament
registrant and must be submitted in writing on the
day of the alleged infraction. In the event of such
an allegation, the tournament directors will have
the sole and exclusive responsibility to investigate
the alleged incident and to rule as to whether any
violation materially aided the angler, crew, or vessel,
or otherwise affected the outcome of the tournament. Any subsequent penalty will be solely at the
discretion of the tournament directors and shall be
final. In all cases, registrant and their crews agree to
be bound by the ruling of the tournament directors.

Where the Bridge Meets Cape May
T-Top Towers
By Steve Gaskill and Andy McDevitt of Oceanview Marine Welding
We all know that there has been
a major shift in sportfishing boats
over the past decade. Whereas inboard express and flybridge models
once dominated offshore tournaments they are increasingly being
challenged by modern center consoles powered by two, three and
sometimes even four outboard engines. This dramatic shift has been
driven by several factors, not the
least of which has been the current
long and deep recession. Couple a
troubled economy with the high
cost of fuel and remember that
today’s center consoles are more
capable, faster and cost much less
to buy. Not only do they cost less
at the onset, they cost much less to
run. Anglers in particular like the
360 degree fish-fighting ability
which is simply not available with
a traditional flybridge or express
style inboard. Finally there’s the
portability of center consoles. An
important advantage of a center
console boat is the ability for the
owner to trailer it. Now an owner
can easily relocate to places he
has always wanted to fish, or even

move for better weather.
However, traditional flybridge
boats in particular do enjoy one
important advantage, visibility!
While on an epic sailfishing trip
in Quepos, Costa Rica last year
with Captain Mike Adkins, this
very topic came up during a discussion of the pros and cons of today’s modern center console boat
designs. Captain Mike pointed
out that the one big problem with
center console boats was the inability to see baits, which often resulted in a missed bite. He added
that although a tower would surely
help, the height of a tower would
likely cancel out the trailering option.
So after talking to numerous
center console owners, we put our
heads together to come up with a
solution. We are now fabricating
a bolt-on T-Top tower designed
specifically for center console
boats of 28’ or larger. But we have
gone even further and now offer
an optional E-Z Fold designed
tower which allows for safe and
legal boat trailering. Our T-Top
Towers are custom designed based
on each specific boat, or can be
added to an existing T-top.
In addition to the folding option, Oceanview offers a plethora
of other possibilities including
steering and control systems, customer seating, rod-holders, a sunshade and LED lighting. Give us

Pre-Season Tackle Prep
By Chuck Hinchcliffe of Off The Hook Bait and Tackle
If you are like me, the winter brings on mild depression. It could be a Vitamin D deficiency from
lack of sunlight. I think it is more likely a lack of
Vitamin O, OFFSHORE. People like us spend the
whole year waiting for the chance to get out to the
canyon edge, chasing pelagic in the Gulf Stream eddies. Sure, you can get on a plane and escape this bitter winter, and it helps, but to me, there is nothing
like the mid-atlantic canyons.
So what can we do to forestall the winter blues?
Watch fishing shows, read books and magazines (like
On The Rip!) and prepare our gear for the coming
season. When you are stuck inside, when the temps
are around zero, and the snow is
piled high, it is a good time
to go through your offshore gear and make
sure that when
the weather breaks and the first Gulfstream eddy is
pushing into our waters, there is nothing holding us
back. Sure you could wait until spring, but who wants
to be inside when the sun is out. Now is the best
time!
I like to start with the big stuff, with the most
moving parts. When it comes to your reels, first start
with a visual inspection. Look over the reel; make sure
everything is in working order. Is the clicker working?
The lever drag smooth? No grinding when you reel?
If you are confident in your mechanical ability most
offshore reels are fairly simple to open up and inspect,
but that is beyond the scope of this article. There are
plenty of resources available both in print and via the
web for guidance. If the reel is not performing correctly check with your
local tackle shop. If everything is
good, I suggest spraying the reel
with some Reel Magic or similar
spray lubricant/protectant. On a
side note, a particular pet peeve
of mine as a tackle shop owner is
the stickers in the reel seat that the
manufacturer places. If you have not
done so already, remove these, as they are a
great place for corrosion to take hold.
With the reels taken care of, move on to the
rods. Inspecting the rods is a much simpler process. A basic visual inspection of the grips and wraps
around the eyes should be first. Next, on ring guides,
rub a q-tip around the inside of each ring. If the q-tip
leaves behind fibers, look for nicks or cracks in the
guide which can easily cause line failure when fighting a fish. If that is the case you will need the guide
replaced by someone with a rod wrapping machine.
For roller guides make sure every guide is spinning
smoothly. If not, it is a fairly simple procedure to disable the guides, clean them with a mild solvent, and
then apply waterproof grease to the outside of the
bearings.

When it comes to fishing line,
my opinion is that monofilament
should be changed yearly on offshore reels. Saltwater and sunlight
will eventually weaken mono,
not to mention fighting fish can
stretch the line, all of which can
be hard to check. The expense to
re-spool versus the cost of losing
a prize fish is negligible in my
opinion. Another option, that has
gained popularity in recent years,
is to fill the reel with braided line
and just have a 100 yard top shot
of monofilament line. This option offers the advantage of having more line on the spool and
the braid will last many years. Another advantage of this method is
that usually the two lines are connected with loop to loop, which
makes switching out the top shot
on the water
fairly easy.
Many tackle
shops carry
top
shots
in
various
line tests on
small spools,
p re - l o a d e d
and ready to
use.
The next
preparator y
step would
be to inspect
lures, spreader bars, and
daisy chains.
Take a look at the line, keeping
an eye out for any kinks or nicks.
You don’t want to lose big tuna
and a nice Black Bart lure because
the leader snapped from a kink
in storage. Check the hooks for
rust, and if they are indeed rusty,
throw them out and re-rig them.
Rust cannot be sharpened and is
a weak point in the metal. If the
hooks look good, sharpen them
with a hook file and use a black
sharpie to mark the edge and
point of the hook. This serves two
purposes; the sharpie ink will act
as a protectant and it will also give
you a visual cue of which hooks
you have sharpened.
Once all the preventive maintenance is done. I like to organize
the tackle for the upcoming season. On the boat I fish on, we store
the gear by type and how often
it is used. The stuff we use most,
daisy chains and lures, are usually
in a bucket in the cockpit. But, the
other stuff
that
isn’t
used every
trip is stored
in
plastic
totes by type.
Lures, rubber squids,
extra dredge
baits, etc. all
get stowed
and labeled,
so we can
find what we
need quickly.
Another
winter
project that
many of us do is to make leaders.
Making up various line test leaders can save lots of valuable time
during the season. One suggestion
is to take the leaders in groups of
3 or 4, coil them together and secure them with a twist tie or eze
curl. If this is done uniformly,
you can always reach into the bag
and know how many are in each
bundle. Also, store the leaders in
labeled zip lock bags according to
line test.
The last thing for offshore fishing would be the bait. The most
popular offshore bait for tuna,
mahi, and marlin is ballyhoo.
Sadly, in New Jersey we have to
look elsewhere for our supply of
these beaked fish. If you hold your
supply over the winter, now is
the time to go in the freezer and
inspect your bait. Make sure the
seal on the vacuum packed baits is
good and that there is no air in the
pack. Look for icing and freezer
burn. If it is not too bad, you can
still use these baits, but I would
consider them my backups, not
what I would start the day with.
The reason I say to check the bait
now, by spring the highest quality
ballyhoo (“the greenies”) have already been caught, packaged and
sold. So, if you want the best baits
for the upcoming season, you
need to talk to your marina and/
or tackle shop and secure the winter caught bait as soon as possible.
Hopefully, this article has given you some ideas on how to prepare for our favorite pastime and
increase your productivity. Good
fishing this season and I hope to
see you on the rip!

Tournament Winning Tuna Tactics
Two MidAtlantic Tournament Winning Captains
Share Their Secrets to Cashing In!
By Jeff Merrill
It’s often been said luck is
preparation waiting for opportunity and nowhere is that phrase
more appropriate than when applied to big game tournament
fishing. Crews spend days, often
weeks, preparing before they hit
the busy summer tournament trail
which culminates each year with
a week at the MidAtlantic. Walt
Harmstead and Deane Lambros
are two captains familiar with
the winner’s stage at the MidAtlantic tournament. Lambros was
working the cockpit aboard the
Canyon Runner when they won
back-to-back Heaviest Tuna category prize money in 2013 and
Preparation begins long before lines in.
Tackle and other gear must be ready as soon as the first lure or bait hits the water on Day One.
2014 while Harmstead scored the
3rd Heaviest Tuna prize in 2014,
and also nabbing the 2nd Heaviest
Blue Marlin prize that same year
as well. Combined, that’s well over
$1 million in tournament winnings from the MidAtlantic over
two years! Harmstead and Lambros were both eager to share their
secrets for putting a winning tuna
in the cockpit.
Lambros has spent the past seven years with the Canyon Runner
charter operation based in Point
Pleasant, New Jersey and tallies
well over 180 days a year on the
water including 55-60 offshore
trips and currently runs the 48’ Vi-

king Canyon Runner. After a 20
year stint as a commercial fisherman Harmstead has spent the past
10 years on the bridge of sportfishing vessels including his current
ride, Goin’ in Deep, a Viking 70.
Both captains agree that preparation begins long before they leave
the dock on Day One of any tournament and feel seawater temperature charts play an important role
in any offshore angler’s success,
whether tournament fishing or not.
“We look at the most recent satellite shots to see where the best water is,” notes Lambros. “We’re very
focused on the water and having
two boats out there is a big help for
us,” he added. Harmstead echoed
the same sentiments and added
another part to the puzzle. “In addition to temperature I’m looking
at chlorophyll as well which attracts bait and in turn gamefish,
including tuna.” Harmstead prefers a temperature range of 68° to
73° while Lambros indicated he’s
fine with water temperatures of
up to 78°. “I look for good, clean
water on the structure edge,” notes
Harmstead. Both captains also
agree pre-fishing can give tournament participants an edge as well.
Running a charter boat with a busy
schedule helps Lambros gather the
information he needs leading up
to an event. Harmstead also likes
to spend a day or two pre-fishing
before an event but says that has
its own drawbacks, including when
you catch a big fish the day before
the tournament! “Last year we
fished the day before the MidAtlantic and boated a 308-pound big
eye. So it’s both good and bad but it
at least it gives us a chance to read
the water.” In any case, pre-fishing
can tell you where you need to go
but often more importantly, where
not to go.
The contemporary speed of today’s offshore vessels combined
with the tournament boundar-
ies often puts crews on the fishing grounds with time to scout
the area well before lines in. This
is valuable time which should be
well spent looking for signs of life
such as, birds, slicks and whales
on the water and bait and fish below the surface. Both captains feel
whales, particularly pilot whales,

are a good sign when looking for big eye tuna as they
often feed on the same bait.
Trolling patterns are as varied as the vessels they’re
pulled from and most captains have a steadfast preference as to what goes where in the spread. Lambros
likes a mix of artificial lures and baits in his trolling
pattern. Streaker lures and green machine-type lures
are favorites though he’ll add color and flash with
skirts on his natural baits. “We’ll mix in some natural baits such as ballyhoo with Joe Shute skirts,” he
noted. Harmstead also prefers a mix of baits and lures
with Joe Shute and Ilander skirts while also adding
some jet head-type lures including various Melton
Jets. “I try to put the heavier jet heads, those weighing
six to eight ounces, back further in the pattern on far
‘riggers and the shotgun line when I use it because I
want the lures down a little deeper,” adding that he’ll
put splashing lures up close behind the boat around
the teasers. Harmstead utilizes an eight-rod pattern
that includes three on each ‘rigger and two flat lines.
“I have 48-foot ‘riggers on the boat so I can pull three
lines from each one. My flat lines are tight to the
transom and are dink ballyhoo baits. I like to keep the
dinks close because hopefully we won’t get a big eye
bite on one there.” Harmstead also likes to position
his lures tight together which he feels helps increase
his chances of multiple hook-ups.
When fishing tournaments Lambros will take advantage of what has produced best for him during the
season. “We’ll pull as many lures as we can and in the
MidAtlantic where there’s no limit to the number of
lines or teasers we’ll put a mix of ten lures and baits
in the pattern.” Lambros prefers to put artificial lures
close to the boat while keeping the natural baits further back in the spread. His natural baits are a mix of
naked and skirted baits with Ilander, Joe Shute and
Sea Witch skirts. Favorite colors include a mix of
green, blue and white and solid white with pink or red
heads.” He also feels color at times may appeal more
to the fisherman than it does to the fish. “We pull
rainbow squid spreader bars a lot when charter fishing
and they produce extremely well for us with tuna but
when’s the last time you saw a rainbow-colored squid?”
Both captain’s agree trolling speed has many variables

51
including hull configuration, wind
and sea conditions and what you’re
pulling in your spread. A range of
between five and seven knots has
proven effective for both but the
key is finding a speed where the
lures and baits create the best action and just plain look good in
the water. Harmstead did add that
on glass-calm days he’ll sometimes
troll slightly faster to help create
some more splash from his lures.
Teasers are an important part
of any offshore trolling pattern
and run the gamut from simple
chains to double and triple dredges depending on the primary species pursued. Lambros likes squid
chains and squid spreader bars but
has somewhat of a different approach. “Symmetry is very important so both teasers, whether I’m
pulling squid chains or spreader
bars, need to be of the same type,
color and position in the pattern,”
he noted. Harmstead also likes
spreader bars and pink squid daisy
chains as teasers and places them
about 30 feet off the transom just
behind the flat lines.
Both captains agree when big
eye fishing in a tournament, much
of their on the water strategy is
beating up the structure and working the area while keeping an eye
out for birds, bait and fish. Neither
captain is a big fan of pulling up
stakes and moving on. “Tournament fishing is very different than
charter fishing in that you have a
limited amount of time with lines
in the water so it’s difficult to make
drastic moves over a large area as
that uses up fishing time,” notes
Lambros. “It’s got to be a heck of
a big eye bite for me to pick up
and make a drastic move miles
away.” Harmstead agrees noting
you need to put your time in. “Big
eyes may only bite for an hour at
a time so you need to work the
area hard when you mark fish. You
gotta be patient. Sometimes you’ll
read squid deep, say 300-400 feet,
but you have to keep at it because
later in the day the bait may come
up and the big eyes are often right
there with them.” Both captains
noted that if you mark fish and
also focus on the whales and work
in and around them, you will often
yield the best results.
Multiple bites are not only exciting they offer the best chance
at getting on the leaderboard at
any tournament. To draw multiple strikes both captains agree
you need to keep the boat moving
ahead. “You want to keep the action of the remaining lures in the
pattern so it’s important to resist
the temptation to stop the boat and
Top and Left: Hard work and often a little luck can be the difference in catching or just plain fishing.
Right: Rough days require adjustments such as changing trolling speed and placing lures farther back in the pattern so look enticing.

focus on one fish when there may
be others around,” notes Lambros.
Harmstead also feels it’s important
to keep fishing even if that monster is melting line from the reel. “I
really believe you gotta keep going.
Don’t change the boat sound by
pulling the throttles back.”
We all have bad days and when
fishing is tough you don’t necessarily need to overhaul tournament strategy, even if you’ve rolled
the dreaded doughnut! Your plan
going forward should focus on
what you saw, heard and did that
particular day. “It all depends on
what you’d consider a donut,” says
Lambros, adding there are other
factors to consider. “Was there
anything seen or caught where
you were fishing that day? Did you
score with yellowfins but didn’t get
the big eye you were looking for? If
conditions look promising and you
read bait, saw birds and other life
but didn’t get the big eye bite, you
may want to fish the same area the
following day.” Harmstead added
much of the same but also feels
you need to be confident in your
spread. “I’m not big on changing
everything. I have a pile of different lures in a variety of shapes
and colors but I’ll always pull what
I’m confident in and what has produced for me over time.”
Finally, both captain’s agree
having a good mate is an important part of a successful crew. The
skills of a mate whether it’s rigging baits, setting the trolling pattern, clearing lines or wiring and
gaffing fish can be the difference
between a tournament win and
just participating. “It’s important
the captain and mate have a synergy between them, almost like
one knows what the other is going
to do,” says Lambros. “You need to
keep everybody’s head in the game
and everyone focused on the same
goal - catching fish and winning
the tournament!”
IGFA Rules
The following angling rules have been formulated by the International
Game Fish Association to promote ethical and sporting angling practices, to
establish uniform regulations for the compilation of world game fish records,
and to provide basic angling guidelines for use in fishing tournaments and
any other group angling activities.
The word "angling" is defined as catching or attempting to catch fish with
a rod, reel, line, and hook as outlined in the international angling rules.
There are some aspects of angling that cannot be controlled through rule
making, however. Angling regulations cannot insure an outstanding performance from each fish, and world records cannot indicate the amount of difficulty in catching the fish. Captures in which the fish has not fought or has not
had a chance to fight do not reflect credit on the fisherman, and only the angler
can properly evaluate the degree of achievement in establishing the record.
Only fish caught in accordance with IGFA international angling rules, and
within the intent of these rules, will be considered for world records.
Following are the rules for freshwater and saltwater fishing and a separate
set of rules for All-Tackle Length and Flyfishing.
RULES FOR FISHING IN FRESH AND SALT WATER
Equipment Regulations
A. LINE
1. Monofilament, multifilament, and lead core multifilament lines may be
used. For line classes, see World Record Requirements.
2. Wire lines are prohibited.
B. LINE BACKING
1. Backing not attached to the fishing line is permissible with no restrictions as to size or material.
2. If the fishing line is attached to backing, the catch shall be classified under the heavier of the lines. Backing may not exceed the 130 lb (60 kg)
line class and must be of a type of line approved for use in these angling
rules.
C. DOUBLE LINE
The use of a double line is not required. If one is used, it must meet the following specifications:
1. A double line must consist of the actual line used to catch the fish.
2. Double lines are measured from the start of the knot, braid, roll or splice
making the double to the farthermost end of the knot, splice, snap,
swivel or other device used for securing the trace, leader, lure or hook to
the double line.
Saltwater species: In all line classes up to and including 20 lb (10 kg),
the double line shall be limited to 15 feet (4.57 meters). The combined
length of the double line and leader shall not exceed 20 feet (6.1 meters).
The double line on all classes of tackle over 20 lb (10 kg) shall be limited to 30 feet (9.14 meters). The combined length of the double line and
leader shall not exceed 40 feet (12.19 meters).
Freshwater species: The double line on all classes of tackle shall not
exceed 6 feet (1.82 meters). The combined length of the double line and
the leader shall not exceed 10 feet (3.04 meters).
D. LEADER
The use of a leader is not required. If one is used, it must meet the
following specifications:
The length of the leader is the overall length including any lure, hook
arrangement or other device, and is measured to the bend of the last
hook. The leader must be connected to the line with a snap, knot, splice,
swivel or other device. Holding devices are prohibited. There are no regulations regarding the material or strength of the leader.
Saltwater species: In all line classes up to and including 20 lb (10 kg),
the leader shall be limited to 15 feet (4.57 meters). The combined length
of the double line and leader shall not exceed 20 feet (6.1 meters). The
leader on all classes of tackle over 20 lb (10 kg) shall be limited to 30 feet
(9.14 meters). The combined length of the double line and leader shall
be limited to 40 feet (12.19 meters).
Freshwater species: The leader on all classes of tackle shall be limited
to 6 feet (1.82 meters). The combined length of the double line and leader shall not exceed 10 feet (3.04 meters).
E. ROD
1. Rods must comply with sporting ethics and customs. Considerable latitude is allowed in the choice of a rod, but rods giving the angler an unfair advantage will be disqualified. This rule is intended to eliminate the
use of unconventional rods.
2. The rod tip must be a minimum of 40 inches (101.6 cm) in length. The
rod butt cannot exceed 27 inches (68.58 cm) in length. These measurements must be made from a point directly beneath the center of the
reel. A curved butt is measured in a straight line. When the rod butt is
placed in a gimbal, the measurement from the center of the reel seat to
the pivot point of the gimbal can be no more than 27 inches. (The above
measurements do not apply to surfcasting rods.)
F. REEL
1. Reels must comply with sporting ethics and customs.
2. Power driven reels of any kind are prohibited. This includes motor, hydraulic, or electrically driven reels, and any device that gives the angler
an unfair advantage.
3. Ratchet handle reels are prohibited.
4. Reels designed to be cranked with both hands at the same time are prohibited.
G. HOOKS FOR BAIT FISHING
1. For live or dead bait fishing no more than two single hooks may be used.
Both must be firmly imbedded in or securely attached to the bait. The
eyes of the hooks must be no less than a hook's length (the length of the
largest hook used) apart and no more than 18 inches (45.72 cm) apart.
The only exception is that the point of one hook may be passed through
the eye of the other hook. A hook may not precede bait, lure or bait/lure
combo by more than one hook’s length.
2. The use of a dangling or swinging hook is prohibited. Double or treble
hooks are prohibited.
3. A two hook rig for bottom fishing is acceptable if it consists of two single
hooks on separate leaders or drops. Both hooks must be imbedded in
the respective baits and separated sufficiently so that a fish caught on
one hook cannot be foul hooked by the other.
4. A photograph or sketch of the hook arrangement must accompany all
record applications made for fish caught on two-hook tackle.
H. HOOKS AND LURES
1. When using an artificial lure with a skirt or trailing material, no more
than two single hooks may be attached to the line, leader, or trace. The
hooks need not be attached separately. The eyes of the hooks must be
no less than an overall hook's length (the overall length of the largest
hook used) apart and no more than 12 inches (30.48 cm) apart. The only
exception is that the point of one hook may be passed through the eye
of the other hook. The trailing hook may not extend more than a hook's
length beyond the skirt of the lure. A hook may not precede bait, lure
or bait/lure combo by more than one hook’s length. A photograph or
sketch showing the hook arrangement must accompany a record application.
2. Gang hooks are permitted when attached to plugs and other artificial
lures that are specifically designed for this use. Gang hooks must be
free swinging and shall be limited to a maximum of three hooks (single,
double, or treble, or a combination of any three). Baits may not be used

with gang hooks. A photograph or sketch of the plug or lure must be submitted with record applications.
3. Assist hooks or other such single hooks that are attached to a lure with a lead constructed of monofilament, multifilament, wire or other such material must
conform to the following: When using assist hooks on any artificial lure, other than a skirted lure, the lead cannot be more than 1 ½ hook’s length and the
bend of the hook may not be more than 4 inches (101 mm), whichever is less, from the closest point of attachment on the lure. Double and treble hooks
may not be used as assist hooks.
4. Only one lure containing hooks may be used at a time.
I. OTHER EQUIPMENT
1. Fighting chairs may not have any mechanically propelled devices that aid the angler in fighting a fish.
2. Gimbals must be free swinging, which includes gimbals that swing in a vertical plane only. Any gimbal that allows the angler to reduce strain or to rest
while fighting the fish is prohibited.
3. Gaffs and nets used to boat or land a fish must not exceed 8 feet (2.44 meters) in overall length. In using a flying or detachable gaff the rope may not
exceed 30 feet (9.14 meters). The gaff rope must
be measured from the point where it is secured
to the detachable head to the other end. Only
the effective length will be considered. If a fixed
head gaff is used, the same limitations shall apply and the gaff rope shall be measured from the
same location on the gaff hook. Only a single
hook is permitted on any gaff. Harpoon or lance
attachments are prohibited. Tail ropes are limited to 30 feet (9.14 meters). (When fishing from a
bridge, pier, or other high platform or structure,
this length limitation does not apply.)
4. Entangling devices, either with or without a
hook, are prohibited and may not be used for
any purpose including baiting, hooking, fighting, or landing the fish.
5. Outriggers, downriggers, spreader bars and
kites are permitted to be used provided that the
actual fishing line is attached to the snap or other release device, either directly or with some
other material. The leader or double line may
not be connected to the release mechanism
either directly or with the use of a connecting
device. Spreader bars are also acceptable when
used strictly as a teaser.
6. Daisy chains, birds, floats and similar devices
may only be used if they do not unfairly hamper
or inhibit the normal swimming or fighting ability of the fish, thereby giving the angler or crew
an unfair advantage in fighting, landing or boating the fish.
7. A safety line may be attached to the rod, reel, or
harness provided that it does not in any way assist the angler in fighting the fish.
Angling Regulations
1. From the time that a fish strikes or takes a bait
or lure, the angler must hook, fight, and land or
boat the fish without the aid of any other person, except as provided in these regulations.
2. If a rod holder is used, once the fish is hooked,
the angler must remove the rod from the rod
holder as quickly as possible.
3. In the event of a multiple strike on separate lines
being fished by a single angler, only the first fish
fought by the angler will be considered for a
world record.
4. If a double line is used, the intent of the regulations is that the fish will be fought on the single
line most of the time that it takes to land the fish.
5. Use of a rod belt or waist gimbal is permitted.
6. When angling from a boat, once the leader is
brought within the grasp of the mate, or the end
of the leader is wound to the rod tip, more than
one person is permitted to hold the leader. Any-

one assisting a shore-bound or wading angler must be within a rods length of the angler before touching the leader or netting or gaffing the fish.
7. One or more gaffers may be used in addition to persons holding the leader. The gaff handle must be in hand when the fish is gaffed.
8. The angling and equipment regulations shall apply until the fish is weighed.
The following acts will disqualify a catch:
1. Failure to comply with equipment or angling regulations.
2. The act of persons other than the angler in touching any part of the rod, reel, or line (including the double line) either bodily or with any device, from the
time a fish strikes or takes the bait or lure, until the fish is either landed or released, or in giving any aid other than that allowed in the rules and regulations. If an obstacle to the passage of the line through the rod guides has to be removed from the line, then the obstacle (whether chum, floatline, rubber
band, or other material) shall be held and cut free. Under no circumstances should the line be held or touched by anyone other than the angler during this
process.
3. Resting the rod in a rod holder, on the gunwale of the boat, or any other object while playing the fish.
4. Handlining or using a handline or rope attached
in any manner to the angler's line or leader for
the purpose of holding or lifting the fish.
5. Shooting, harpooning, or lancing any fish (including sharks and halibuts) at any stage of the
catch.
6. Chumming with or using as bait the flesh, blood,
skin, or any part of mammals other than hair or
pork rind used in lures designed for trolling or
casting.
7. Using a boat or device to beach or drive a fish
into shallow water in order to deprive the fish of
its normal ability to swim.
8. Changing the rod or reel while the fish is being
played.
9. Splicing, removing, or adding to the line while
the fish is being played.
10. Intentionally foul hooking a fish.
11. Catching a fish in a manner that the double line
never leaves the rod tip.
12. Using a size or kind of bait that is illegal to possess.
13. Attaching the angler's line or leader to part of a
boat or other object for the purpose of holding
or lifting the fish.
14. If a fish escapes before gaffing or netting and is
recaptured by any method other than as outlined in the angling rules.
The following situations will disqualify a catch:
1. When a rod breaks (while the fish is being
played) in a manner that reduces the length of
the tip below minimum dimensions or severely
impairs its angling characteristics.
2. Mutilation to the fish, prior to landing or boating the catch, caused by sharks, other fish, mammals, or propellers that remove or penetrate the
flesh. (Injuries caused by leader or line, scratches, old healed scars or regeneration deformities
are not considered to be disqualifying injuries.)
Any mutilation on the fish must be shown in a
photograph and fully explained in a separate
report accompanying the record application.
3. When a fish is hooked or entangled on more
than one line.
