In this class, we'll build a simple house (or other form) in 3-D and come away with the tools to learn more. The intuitive tool can be used to model anything you design, as well as make cool renderings and videos of your design. Taught by Diana Stephens, Deschutes County Program Assistant. 3K Walk Don’t feel quite up to running 5 kilometers? No problem. This 3k walk will get your blood flowing in a way that is relatively low in intensity. Let’s see those power walking skills! 5K Run Do you like to run, even at a slow pace? Feel like challenging yourself a bit? Come try this 5k run! This is a nice, relatively short distance that is great for all kinds of people. You don’t have to be a great runner to be able to succeed in the 5k, so come and give it a try! Agriculture Tour This year we are looking at touring a variety of prominent Mid-Willamette Valley agricultural enterprises. We will be visiting Peoria Gardens, one of Oregons premiere wholesale plant suppliers as well as Van Beek Dairy one of the largest dairies in the Pacific Northwest. We will also visit the Anderson Family Farm, an innovative sheep producer, and wind up the day with a tour of an organic farm that sells animal and plant products direct to customers onsite. Ambassador Training Take the first step towards becoming a County or State Ambassador. Come learn about 4-H and how to communicate with potential 4-H members, business owners, and potential sponsors. Participants will learn what it means to be an Ambassador for 4-H and how to apply the information that is learned to their own county program. Taught by Melanie Mintken, Marion County 4-H Agent and current State Ambassadors. An Inside Look on the Outdoors Learn the what, where and why of Wildlife Areas and how you can be involved. There will also be some activities in invasive species, hunter education, and angler education. Taught by Kyle Martin, ODFW. Anatomy of the Heart and Eye OSU Veterinary Medicine Professor Terri Clark will lead this class on animal anatomy in the vet school’s anatomy classroom. The first part of the class will involve discussion of the anatomy and function of the heart and eye. In the second part of the session, you will dissect hearts and eyes. Animal Science Tour Tour the animal science facilities at Oregon State University. Visit the Dairy Barn, sheep barn, Horse Center and more. Take a look at new additions to the department and the various off-campus facilities where livestock are housed. You’ll also learn a lot about the Animal Science program at OSU. Around the World in 90 Minutes In this class you will see the highlights of many diverse cultures all over the world. You will learn about different cultures and what makes them unique. You will also learn about popular and traditional foods, "bizarre" foods, religion, TV, landmarks and music. Taught by Jessica Drew, State Ambassador. Athletic Tour Enjoy this opportunity to visit the athletic facilities of OSU Beaver baseball, football, and basketball. You might even get to meet some OSU athletes along the way! Attitude of Gratitude: 4-H Service Learning Project (CS) Join fellow 4-H members from across the state as Scott Elmshaeuser, Executive Director of the Oregon 4-H Foundation, shares the importance of philanthropy. Scott will provide ideas on how you can express your gratitude to volunteers and donors of the 4-H program in your county. You will have the opportunity to practice what you learned through writing thank you cards to donors of the Oregon 4-H Foundation. Avery Park (CS) Avery Park is the largest community park in the Corvallis Parks & Rec. system. Youth who participate in this service project are vital to the yearly maintenance of the park. Possible projects to be completed at the park include spreading bark, maintaining paths, and pulling weeds. Participants must wear closedtoe shoes. Beginning Cartooning Have you ever wanted to learn how to draw cartoons? During this workshop you will be learning drawing tips and techniques on how to draw cartoons and make your drawings come alive. Get ready to draw and have fun! Taught by Sandra Carlson, Clatsop County 4-H Agent. Blubber Burgers We're going to look at nutritional information in popular fast food items, and see what you are putting into your unsuspecting body. To see the fat content, we'll make "Blubber Burgers"… which you will never forget! Taught by Robin Galloway, Linn County 4-H Agent. Boot Camp Despite the class title, I promise your instructor won't be too much of a drill sergeant! This class mixes strength training and cardio for full-body interval workout. Come kick your body into gear in this fun class! Taught by Pam Lundeberg, CSU Fitness Instructor and Oregon 4-H Alumnus. Boots, Backpacks and Cat Holes, OH MY! If anyone has ever suggested that you "go take a hike" then this workshop is for you! Did you know you live in a state that is home to 11 National Forests, about 361 State Parks, about 21 National Wildlife Areas and 20 waterways! What does that mean for you? It means you should get outside and PLAY! This two-part workshop is designed to help you understand what is needed to "play" in the out-of-doors and return without having to meet the Sheriff and/or Search and Rescue. Part one of the workshop will explore What's in Your Pack: 10 essentials to wilderness travel, Leave No Trace principals, and how to ensure your safe return. Part two will be a trip to OSU McDonald-Dunn Research Forest to hike the trails and prepare lunch using camp stoves! The remainder of the trip will be conducted in a hike-teach-hiketeach and recap format, wrapping up with participation in a forest-related service project. Lead by Woody Davis, Columbia County 4-H Agent. Building Birdhouses John Snelling and his other talented woodworkers will guide you in constructing a birdhouse from Red Cedar fencing wood. You will also learn about local songbirds which use cavities to lay their eggs and raise young. Business College Tour Tour the state-of–the–art Austin Hall, the new home of the OSU School of Business. Find out about all the business facilities at OSU and learn about the various programs offered. Cake Decorating Get a demonstration and then hands-on experience using various cake decorating tips and learn about working with icing and mixing colors. Taught by Kylie Stroda, Columbia County 4-H member. Cardio Kickboxing Like throwing punches and kicking in doors? Then this is the class for you! Come jab, hook, uppercut, and kick in this fun, fast-paced cardio class! Work hard, get sweaty, and have a great time doing it! Taught by Pam Lundeberg, CSU Fitness Instructor and Oregon 4-H Alumnus. Cards For Troops (CS) We will be writing letters of appreciation to our military troops serving abroad. This is part a national community service program to encourage our family, friends and neighbors in uniform. Led by Martina Vega, State Ambassador. Care of the Hands and Nails Come learn how to care for your hands and nails to develop beautiful nails. Massage techniques and hand exercises will be shared. Participants will experience hands-on care of their hands & nails, including massage, cuticle care, nail shaping, polish & artistic ways to decorate nails. Participants will take home their own nail care kit. Taught by Angie Ketscher, Harney County volunteer. Ceramic Owls Owls are very popular. We have designed a clay owl project. Each participant will make and embellish their own Owl from sculpt clay. These are some cute Owls! Owls will be able to be used as necklaces, keychains, or decorations. This is a very fun project for all crafters. Taught by Fred Pelroy, Harney County volunteer. Chemistry - Hands on Investigations Join OSU Scientists and Engineers for 90 minutes of hands-on science and engineering activities. Activities might include investigations of gases, electromagnets, robotics, catapults, design stability, and batteries. Taught by Dr. Richard Nafshun of the OSU Department of Chemistry. Chopped: Chef Challenge Based on the reality TV show, "Chopped" is a competitive cooking experience like no other. After breaking up into teams, participants will work together to create a masterpiece dish from mystery ingredients. Teams will learn food presentation, while competing to be the next great chefs. Led by Madison Graham and Payton Rigert, State Ambassadors. Climbing the Walls Spend part of your day at the OSU rock-climbing wall under the watchful eyes of well-qualified instructors. You can literally reach the ceiling as you and a partner work together to reach the top! A release form must be signed by your parent or guardian to participate in this class. Collegiate 4-H Ever wondered how you can stay connected with 4-H while in College? Do you still want to stay in touch with some of the coolest people in the state? Then collegiate 4-H is just for you! Come join us as we talk about collegiate 4-H at Oregon State/ LBCC, and how you can start up your own local collegiate 4-H club! Come join us for some snacks, questions, and icebreaker activities as we give you a taste of what Oregon Collegiate 4-H is! Taught by Sam Meisenhelder and Ben Reitmann, OSU Collegiate 4-H. Congress and Ambassador Interview Practice This class is geared toward members applying for State Ambassador and National Congress and will help you understand the interview process. Through this class, you will gain a better understanding of how to be successful in interviewing for these opportunities. Taught by Collegiate 4-H members. Congress Interviews Previously selected Congress finalists participate in a formal interview with the State 4-H Recognition Committee. Selected delegates will attend National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, Georgia with 1,300 other 4H members! Create Your Vision Do you have big plans for your future? Want to help make sure you reach your goals? Join the Lane Country 4-H Ambassadors to improve your goal setting skills and create your very own Vision Board! It's a proven fact that you are more likely to accomplish things that you have clearly set your sights on and are focused on. Come set your goals, create your board, and put yourself on track to succeed! Taught by Karissa Dishon, Lane County 4-H Agent. Decisively Judgemental Join other horse-crazy enthusiasts to improve your judging and oral reason skills. Horse judging is important for all owners even if you never plan to compete. We will look at sample classes and have the chance to practice placing them. Learn to pick out flaws and understand the implications they have on the horse’s health. Think oral reasons are scary or intimidating? We will remove some of the mystery, and help you improve your skills. Taught by Karissa Dishon, Lane County 4-H Agent. Dog Agility Try dog agility with members of Willamette Agility Group (WAG) and their talented canine partners. Learn the basics of agility training and handling and even run a course with a borrowed, experienced dog. This class is tons of fun and will leave you begging for more. Woof! Dog Training,Tricks and Obedience In this class, you will be shown many basic obedience exercises and how to teach them. You will also learn some ideas for teaching cool tricks. Taught by Cheyenne Young, State Ambassador. Dresses for Africa (CS) You will be helping cut, sew, and decorate dresses to be sent to orphans in Africa. Led by Sasha Perez, Yamhill County 4-H member. Embellished Hats and/or Bags Let's get creative and decorate a cute hat or a canvas bag with multi-layered flowers and bling. Everybody loves a little sparkle and some bling. Flowers will be cut from felt and burlap using Cricket cutting system. Stack up the different petals and add some sparkle and your bag will have some serious chic! Taught by Angie Ketscher, Harney County volunteer. Engineering Tour Tour all the engineering facilities at OSU and learn about the various programs offered. Event Planning 101: Get your Game Face On! Ever have to plan an event for you 4-H club or your school and needed help? This is the class for you! We will give you the information and guidance needed to plan your event, be a leader in organization, learn how to delegate and work with committees. Each participant will take home a guide on event planning to use for any future events and activities. This will be a fun and hands-on learning opportunity you won't want to miss! Taught by Kane Sweeney, Emily Taylor and Josh White - Umatilla and Morrow county youth. Exploring Osmosis through Gummy Bears We will be discovering what osmosis is and how it works. In this class, we will be using our newfound knowledge of osmosis to perform experiments on different foods. We will be making our very own mutant gummy bears as we test different substances to see the effects of osmosis in action. Taught by Maggie Swarzendruber, State Ambassador. Extended 4-H Opportunities This class will cover National 4-H opportunities from different national shows to the National 4-H Congress! We will talk about 4-H opportunities with International Exchange Programs and National 4-H Conference. These are all trips of a lifetime. We will be going over how you can go on these trips and what the requirements are! Join us as we go through and discuss these events, work through application procedures, and do get acquainted activities! Taught by Sam Meisenhelder and Ben Reitmann, OSU Collegiate 4-H. Financial Literacy Want to help prepare middle school students for the real world and learn about your own financial success? Please join OSU students for a brainstorming session in creating an amazing, energetic, and eye-opening game about financial literacy and building a successful future. With the help of your hard work, high schoolers in 4-H leadership roles across the state of Oregon will have the opportunity to implement the finished game with younger students. Taught by Lauren Caruso, Outreach and Civic Engagement Coordinator, OSU College of Business. Find Something To Do! Have you ever been asked to lead an icebreaker or game at your club meeting? Come, get ideas and learn fun ways to get acquainted, games and team building! Taught by Mandi Desmarteau, State Ambassador. Flower it Up! (CS) Have a hand in putting together decorations for the Saturday brunch! This class will include small craft activities in addition to flower arranging 101. Come learn about aesthetics, what looks great for table decorations and floral designs, and decorations on a small budget. Taught by Claire Sponseller, Umatilla County 4-H Agent. Form…Storm…Norm…Perform…Transform Every team, no matter the size, will progress through 5 stages before becoming solidified as a group. As a facilitator, you must be comfortable helping groups move through each of these stages. We will work on developing skills to debrief activities to ensure your groups understand the intent behind each activity. You will walk away with a flash drive filled with activities, handouts, and PowerPoints that will allow you to lead any group successfully. Taught by Shanna Northway, Grant County 4-H Agent. Gelli Plate Printing Come find out how to use a Gelli plate to make great looking cards/bookmarks or art projects! We will also explore block printing using erasers and screen printing with embroidery hoops and Mod Podge. Taught by Patty Bunch, Jackson County volunteer. Geocaching and Geohiding Spend the morning first learning about what geochching is, how GPS's work - as well as what doesn't work, and what makes a good geocache. Then join with others to locate geocaches around campus. This class in in tribute to a former 4-Her who enjoyed the geocaches we did last year. Taught by Charles Sekafetz, Polk County volunteer. Get Lost in Avery Park Have you ever been lost in the outdoors? What would you do if you were lost? Join us as we explore the wilds of Avery Park. Learn how to expand your senses while using landmarks and other aidless navigation techniques to help find your way. We will explore various survival concepts and experience what it is like to be lost. Taught by Matt Yeager, Deschutes County Program Assistant. Golf Do you know the difference between a birdie and a bogie? What does it mean when you hit the golf ball thin or fat? Come spend an afternoon learning about driving, chipping and putting from a PGA Golf Professional at Trysting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis. This class is designed to introduce beginners to the basics of golf. Golf clubs and balls will be provided. Healthy Campus Cleanup (CS) Cigarette butt litter clean-up. Healthy Campus Initiative staff will provide educational information about OSU’s smoke-free policy, reflection questions, and background information to the volunteers. Homemade Calzone and Pizza Experience “hands-on” how to create delectable pizza and calzone from scratch? Taught by Andrea Moreland. Ice Breakers Whether you're a junior leader, 4-H ambassador, or you just like to have fun, this could be the class for you! Icebreakers are an exciting way to involve people, break the ice and have fun. Learn larger group games as well as small, to take back home and share with your friends, family, and your 4-H clubs. Taught by Madeline Knutz, State Ambassador. Impromptu Speaking Impromptu is a speech that is made or done extemporaneously. It is a great skill for every 4-H member to have. Thinking quickly in an important situation can be very helpful, such as with job interviews. Impromptu also helps promote self-confidence. Taught by Maudey Vore, Lake County youth. Knot Alone (CS) Knot Alone is a community service project organized by Jefferson County 4-Her Kiturah Cloud. The project is to make “no-sew” fleece blankets to be donated to local cancer patients. Blankets made during the 2015 Summer Conference will be donated to the Legacy Emmanuel’s Cancer Healing Center. Come and learn how to make fleece blankes using knots instead of needle and thread. Let’s blanket the Healing Center with fleece! Line Dancing Want to be " busting a move” when “Cotton Eyed Joe” comes on? Well here’s your chance! In this class you will learn all the most popular line dances. You’ll be boot-scoot-and-boogying like a pro when you’re done with this fun class! Taught by Sam Meisenhelder, Collegiate 4-H. Linn-Benton Food Share (CS) Linn-Benton Food Share annually distributes over 4 million pounds of food. During your afternoon here, you will be helping to repackage and sort food items for distribution to local organizations. Making Presentations POP A lot of information and effort goes into presenting, so don't let yours go flat. This class will help you put the polish and finesse on your presentation to make it stand out in a crowd. Public speaking is one of the most used skills in life, so take this opportunity to build your confidence and be ready for your next presentation. Please bring a current presentation you are working on and you will get customized feedback. Taught by Karissa Dishon, Lane County 4-H Agent. Marketing Your Livestock Project Are you doing a market project this year? Do you want to earn the highest price you can at the auction? A quality project shown well is definitely the foundation, but you have to market your project to buyers in order to reach the top. We will talk about best practices, tips, and tricks, to help you stand out to buyers. You will leave this class with a solid marketing plan that is sure to help your bottom line at the sale! Taught by Karissa Dishon, Lane County 4-H Agent. Meat Processing Fundamentals: Cooked/Smoked and Cured Products Attendees will learn basic meat processing concepts, with an emphasis on smoked/cooked and cured meat products. The class will cover formulation and processing of products such as snack sticks, jerky, cooked sausage, pepperoni, salami, whole muscle products (ham, pastrami, turkey), deli meats, bacon, and others. Participants will have the opportunity to make their own summer sausage and take it home. A tour will be provided if time permits. Taught by Nathan Parker, OSU Animal Science graduate student and manager at the Clark Meat Science Center. National Youth Science Day Training Explore the science of motion and learn how to lead this year's 4-H National Youth Science Day (NYSD) experiment in your county! In this class, you will become a 4-H physicist for the day and gain hands-on experience performing the National Science Experiment. Then put on your teaching hat and learn how to engage youth in discussions on topics such as speed, momentum, energy, and time. Finally, use what you've learned to form an action plan for organizing and leading an NYSD event in your community. Taught by Dara Easley, Hood River County Program Assistant. Once Upon a Show Enter the land of cavy and rabbit showing where you will discover how to prepare for the upcoming small animal shows, what to expect at the table, and how to apply that knowledge later on. Demonstrations will be done as well. Taught by Elli Vanderzanden, Collegiate 4-H. OSU Tour Learn how to apply and be admitted to Oregon State University. Then take a tour of OSU’s beautiful campus. Come see all that Oregon State has to offer. Paper Gifts Create three unique gifts from paper using scrapbook techniques and recycled common everyday items. Create a unique gift card holder. Make a note pad from a coaster. Make a unique banner using paint chips! All three gifts will be created during class with supplies provided by the instructors. The only skills required are the ability to glue and use scissors. Taught by Susan Peterson, Harney County volunteer. Pinterest Me! You have seen all the crazy cool ideas on Pinterest. Let's put those awesome "pins" to work and create something new! Learn about upcycling and transforming something old into something new. Participants will go home with a one of a kind creation, information on carrying this type of project into a 4-H project, and even a fair exhibit while working in a hands-on, fun classroom environment. Taught by Ashley Jones, Morrow County 4-H Agent. Produce for the People (CS) Produce for the People garden grows fresh nutritious food for low-income individuals and agencies while providing opportunities for gardeners of all ages to grow, learn, and contribute to their community. They donate a large portion of their produce to the local food bank. You will be planting, weeding, watering, harvesting, moving leaves and compost, possibly painting picnic tables, cleaning tools, and anything else garden related. Quality Livestock Projects Come learn about livestock quality assurance! Practice safe procedures in administering shots and see how well your animal passes the safe taste test. All livestock producers should be aware of their product quality. Come learn how to guarantee your 4-H livestock project is top notch! Taught by Claire Sponseller, Umatilla County 4-H Agent and Jon Gandy, Jefferson County 4-H Agent. Quilling Creations Quilling is a relaxing and rewarding art form. It is easy to learn and only limited by your imagination. Quilling is the craft of curling, bending and arranging thin strips of paper to create beautiful and detailed artwork. It is often used to enhance framed pictures, invitations, scrapbooking and card making. In this class, we will learn basic quilling techniques and discover the limitless art of quilling. Taught by Dara Easley, Hood River County 4-H Program Assistant. Radiation Center Tour When was the last time you got to say you saw a functioning nuclear reactor? Well, come to this class and witness the inner workings of a research reactor as we tour OSU’s on-campus radiation center! You won’t glow in the dark when you leave, but the light bulbs in your head will sure come on with all the cool science you will learn. Taught by certified reactor staff and OSU students Ritmos Latino Dancing Come and have fun moving your body to the Latin rhythms of Samba, Cumbia, Merengue and more. Get your cardio workout of the day while having fun and learning some moves! Taught by AnaLu Fonseca, Benton County 4-H Latino Coordinator. Roping Learn the ropes of roping! Can you lasso a running calf or your favorite dummy? Learn the basic parts of the rope and a swing technique to get you started. Hands on fun reeling in your catch rodeo style. Taught by Sarah Watson, Collegiate 4-H. SAGE Garden (CS) SAGE is a one-acre education and production garden where they grow 3-4 tons of produce each year that is donated to local hunger relief agencies. Volunteers will be able to assist in all parts of the growing cycle at the garden: planting, tending, and harvesting. Salsa Come explore homemade salsa. Make up your own salsa with choice fresh ingredients. Workshop participants will make basic fresh salsa and then make their own unique salsa. Taught by Shana Withee, Harney County 4-H Agent. Sauna's, Sushi and Other Things International What about sauna in summer? How do you really eat with chopsticks? From a look at a fjord to learning about a traditional tea ceremony, 4-H international exchange outbound delegates immerse themselves in the culture of their host countries. Learn how you too can experience such an opportunity. Complete details related to available scholarships to help fund exchange opportunities will also be covered. Self Defense A very introductory self-defense class; this class will cover briefly situational awareness, wrist releases, movement and sensitive zones. Taught by Kyra Forester, State Ambassador. So You Want to be a Camp Counselor What makes a good counselor? What things should be avoided as a counselor? Regardless of whether you're serving at a 4-H camp, church group or other organization, the basics are the same. Come discuss and practice ways to improve your counselor skills. Taught by Robin Galloway, Linn County 4-H Agent. Soccer Have some fun playing the world’s most popular sport. Kick the ball around and play soccer games while learning new skills. Social Media; Spread the 4-H Word Are you enthusiastic about the 4-H Youth Development Program and Social Media? If so, we want you to help us promote the 4-H Youth Development Program! This workshop will provide you with tips for utilizing the social media platform(s) of your choice to showcase your 4-H experiences and increase awareness of the broad opportunities in the 4-H Youth Development Program. Taught by Jamie Davis, Lake County 4-H Agent. Spa and Relaxation 4-H Clubs Discover the enjoyment found within a 4-H Spa and Relaxation Club during this session! Learn about the different projects available to create for spa-type experiences and various relaxation techniques. Participants will go home with a sample container of the products made in the class, learn about tennis ball massage, and will also receive a complete guide on starting this club in their own communities. State Ambassador Interviews This is the interview and speaking test portion of the State Ambassador Team selection process. Members should sign up for this class if they wish to try out for the State Ambassador Team and have submitted an application (due June 1). Stomp Rockets! Make a rocket out of paper and launch it! Vet School Tour Learn what it takes to be a veterinarian and a student of veterinary science at OSU. Visit the College of Veterinary Medicine and see if this might be the career for you. View the small and large animal hospitals in action, with the possibility of observing animals being examined and treated. Visit the animal diagnostic lab and the vet student classrooms. Victorian Soap Bags Do you know how to knit but are looking for a new project? Come learn how to make a Victorian Soap Bag out of beautiful cotton yarn. These beautiful and timeless household items feature Knit and YarnOver stiches (K & YO). Instructions will be shared for I-cords to close the bags. Yarn and needles will be available- or bring your own size 8 or 9 needles. Luscious homemade soaps will be provided to each participant to use in their Victorian Soap Bag. Experiment to achieve unique results only possible with water color pencils. Perfect your wash and see the intensity it produces. Explore the wet-on-wet technique. All supplies will be provided. Taught by Fred Pelroy, Harney County volunteer. Wave Lab Exploration Do you want to learn about waves? Learn about ocean engineering, waves and tsunami research, and observe demonstrations in the Tsunami Wave Basin. It will be waves of fun! Taught by Alicia LymanHolt, Education and Outreach Coordinator at the O. H. Hinsdale Wave Research Laboratory. What The Heck Am I Going To Do With My Life? For many students, finding their passion in life is a huge challenge. Not only that but figuring out how that passion translates into a career where they can actually make a living isn’t easy either. But this workshop will help students not only explore what their strengths and interests are but will provide them with strategies to answer the question, “What The Heck Am I Going To Do With My Life?” Taught by our keynote speaker Grant Baldwin. Window Bird House What's wrong with this bird house? It's missing one side? This window bird house gives you a view into a bird’s living room. The bird house has no back side to it, with 3 suction cups that secure the house to a window, giving you a view of any activity going on in the house! Youth will start with pre-built materials, assemble a bird house with hammering involved, and once finished the kids paint the house if they desire! Taught by Jared Delay, Clackamas County Program Assistant. World of Cheese Make your own cheese. Hear how cheese-making is an applied science involving microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry, and engineering. Taught by Dr. Lisbeth Goddik, Professor of Food Science at OSU. YA4-H! Teens as Teachers Are you interested in teaching others, especially younger kids? Then this class is for you! Youth Advocates for Health (YA4-H) is a new 4-H opportunity that prepares teens to be great teachers! In this class you will participate in fun and interactive activities from the YA4-H! Teens as Teachers program, develop some teaching and leadership skills, and learn about ways you can keep developing as a teen teacher back in your county. Taught by Mary Arnold, State 4-H Specialist. Yoga A vigorous array of flowing asanas coupled with some meditation and yoga philosophy.
