WELCOME
TO THE 2015
OREGON BACH
FESTIVAL
The Creation, one of the greatest musical triumphs of Haydn’s life, is the
awe-inspiring climax of his half-century career. Based on the biblical account of
the creation in Genesis and Milton’s Paradise Lost, this powerful masterpiece
conveys the chaos of the world as it unfolds: the appearance of the stars, sun
and moon, the creation of birds, fish, and beasts and ultimately culminates with
the awakening of Adam and Eve in the idyllic Eden.
You’re cordially invited to make a deeper connection to the OBF by becoming a Friend of the
Festival. Not only will you receive some really
great benefits, but you will also help to offset
artistic costs that are not covered by ticket income
alone. Your contribution will help us continue to
bring the very best talent to Eugene each summer
to make great music, while you enjoy discounted
tickets and other amazing perks.
A contribution of $125 or more with your ticket
order entitles you to the following:
• Ticket discounts of up to 20 percent on all
Beall and Silva shows
• Advance ticket sales (for six weeks, before
tickets go on sale to the general public), best
available seats, and invitations to special events
including concert rehearsals

Brecht’s Seven Deadly Sins, Copland’s Appalachian Spring, plus selections
by Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, rocker Bonnie Tyler, and more.
Hear three of Beethoven’s masterful violin sonatas
performed by the remarkable and internationally acclaimed
duo of violinist Ida Kavafian and pianist Peter Serkin. In
this groundbreaking collaboration with Chamber Music

their musical versatility, elegance, and technical precision.

Orchestra; Craig Hella Johnson, conductor
Estonian-born Arvo Pärt is one of today’s most popular
living composers and renowned for combining the ancient
tradition of sacred music with modern techniques. His
Passio is a setting of the crucifixion of Christ, but differs
from Bach’s dramatic and emotional Passions. Pärt’s
mesmerizing score can be described as beautifully alluring
and quietly meditative. Grammy award winning Craig Hella
Johnson conducts this thought-provoking performance.

“It gives me pleasure to welcome you all to the festival. The power of music to inspire is one
of the major underlying themes of this year’s program as we explore some of the truly great
masterpieces of the musical canon. Beginning with a big bang in the form of Haydn’s Creation
and ending with Mahler’s great exploration of the afterlife in his monumental Resurrection
Symphony, we trace the cycle of life through music. We invite you to come and experience for
yourselves the transformative power of music as we scale these great artistic peaks; immerse
yourself in the life-changing music of Johann Sebastian Bach; come and make history with us
as we unveil the new Berwick Academy for Historical Performance. It fills me with great pride
to be a part of this wonderful festival, and I hope that you will find what you are looking for in
this summer’s program. We are aiming for nothing less than a musical extravaganza!”

From Christmas Day to Epiphany in the 18th century, the town of Leipzig marked the birth of
Jesus and the events surrounding it not with a single feast day but with six special celebrations.
For his Christmas Oratorio, Bach composed a movement honoring each celebration: the first
three commemorated the birth of Jesus (December 25), the announcement to the shepherds
by a host of angels (December 26), and the adoration of the baby by the shepherds (December

WELCOME

OREGON BACH
You’re cordially invited to make a deeper connection to the OBF by becoming a Friend of the

great benefits, but you will also help to offset
artistic costs that are not covered by ticket income

Gustav Mahler’s Second Symphony, also known as

it relays the story of life: the essential quest for understanding,

From Christmas Day to Epiphany in the 18th century, the town of Leipzig marked the birth of
Jesus and the events surrounding it not with a single feast day but with six special celebrations.
For his Christmas Oratorio, Bach composed a movement honoring each celebration: the first
three commemorated the birth of Jesus (December 25), the announcement to the shepherds
by a host of angels (December 26), and the adoration of the baby by the shepherds (December
27). Each and will be closely examined in our annual Discovery Series Lectures.
